Once a Peasant had a dog. The dog was good but so old that he had stopped barking and guarding the household. The peasant turned the dog out of doors, because he didn’t want to feed him. The dog went into the forest and lay under a tree to die. A bear came up to him and asked:
What are you doing here?
I’ve come here to die of hunger. People are ungrateful now: they give you food if you are strong and healthy, and turn out of doors when you grow old, - the Dog answered.
Don’t take it too much to heart. Come with me, I’ll give you some food, - the Bear said.
So they walked together and met a Foal. The Bear killed the Foal and gave all the meat to the Dog. The Dog lived in clover. But when everything had been eaten he felt hungry again and came running to the Bear.
-Have you eaten up all the meat? – asked the Bear.
Yes, I have, and feel hungry again.
I can help you. Do you know the field, where women are harvesting the rye?
Sure I do.
Let’s go there. I’ll steal up to your former Mistress and take her Baby out of its cradle. You must run after me and snatch the baby. When you bring it back your Mistress will be only too happy to invite you back, and feed you well.
They did as he asked. The Bear stole up to the Baby and took it out of the cradle. The Baby began crying, the women run after the Bear, but couldn’t catch him. The mother cried, the women became very sad. Suddenly they noticed the Dog running after the Bear, grabbing the Baby and running back to the woman.
Look! – They said. – The old Dog has taken the Baby from the Bear.
The Mother was happy. She said she would never leave the dog now. She brought the dog home and gave him some milk and bread:
Here you are, eat, please, - said the Mistress.
And she said to the Peasant:
No, my dear man, we have to take care of our Dog and feed him, he rescued our baby from the Bear. And you’ve said he hasn’t any strength left!
Thanks to the Bear, - the Dog thought, - he didn’t let me die of hunger!
And he became the Bear’s faithful friend.
