Plan of a 5-step listening comprehension lesson (60 minutes)
Class profile:4 male-students (profession – analysts and marketing managers) high B2, first language is Russian, location of classroom – the Russian Federation, office of the company.
Lesson topic and the skill or system used: A speaking lesson on the topic “How to Make a Business Introduction”
whiteboard and markers;

Student-centered objective:By the end of the lesson students will practise dialogs between each other, gain more confidence using good English during business meetings, which they have every day, and make a good first impression on their business partners, which is the key point for successful collaboration.
Assumptions:I assume that students have enough knowledge to get a clear idea of new vocabulary, useful phrases and necessary introduction skills, because their level of language is appropriate to it. I assume that students will be interested in this lesson, because they have negotiations with new partners or colleagues from English-speaking countries almost every week and the result of negotiations with partners or effective team-work with colleagues strongly depend on the first impression and good introduction skills.
Potential problems and solutions:all the students have fluent English and very good communicative skills, so it’s very important to provide them a very energetic, full of activities lesson. Also it’s important to give them only useful vocabulary and phrases, because their level of knowledge is rather high, so I must be sure, that they will not be bored and be interested in this lesson. For this reason I asked them on previous lesson, what gaps they have in business vocabulary and what they need to know for more effective work.
The procedures section
Step I –
Objective – To create interest in topic and to personalize lesson content
Before listening to audio I will introduce a new topic to the students and create interest in it. I will focus this part of lesson on speaking, because it’s very important to my students – usually we have lessons early morning, before working day, that’s why they need to do something active not to get asleep (according to my experience, written exercises are not so effective for this goal).
For this reason I will write some phrases on the whiteboard with markers of different colors such as:
1) what is the most important for the first meeting with a new business,
2) what things should you have with you at the first meeting (is it obligatory to have business card, titles etc.?),
3) what are the most important rules for self-introduction and the introduction of your colleague.
Then I ask each of the students to choose any of these topics and say a few words on it. As a help for students I may ask them questions on this topic, for example, such questions I may ask on topic 3:
In Russia we have 2 times of companies – with formal rules of communication and informal ones. What are the difference between them?
How it is related to the rules of business introduction?
What of such companies would be more comfortable for you? Why?
The other students may support the response of this student or add some extra information.
