Aim: to practice in asking questions and telling about Christmas in Britain and in Russia.
The pupils say after the teacher:
Bell, star, chain, baubles, carol, turkey, angel.
The teacher says the words in Russian and the pupils give an English variant.
The pupils ask questions about Christmas.
Do people put Christmas trees in their houses?
How do they decorate the tree?
Where do people put Christmas presents?
Why do children hang stockings on their beds?
What is the traditional Christmas meal?
The teacher: You know some Christmas traditions. What are they? (to put Christmas tree; to decorate the house; to eat roast turkey; to give presents, to send Christmas cards). Today we’ll learn about some more traditions. You’ll read the text, where you’ll come across with the new words. Write them down.
The pupils write down the words from the blackboard:
Cracker -хлопушка
Sack -мешок
North Pole – Северныйполюс
Sleigh - сани
Mincepie – пирог с начинкой
Holly - остролист
Mistletoe -омела
Charity - милосердие
The pupils read the text “Christmas Traditions” (in silence)
CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
It’s Christmas Day and it’s time for Christmas dinner. But what are Sam Shaker and Tony Bistro doing before the meal? They are pulling the cracker! Crackers are usual at Christmas dinner. There is always a paper hat, a small present and a joke in the cracker. Look at Paul Perfect! He is cutting turkey with roast potatoes, carrots, peas, Brussels sprouts.
At night Father Christmas (Santa Claus) comes with his sack of presents from the North Pole on his flying sleigh, pulled by his eight reindeer. Like many British children Fidel Disastro is putting a drink and a mince pie for Father Christmas and carrots for his animals by the fireplace. A mince pie is a small round pie with a sweet mixture of currants, raisins, apples, nuts, spices and sugar.
For dessert Twiggy Twist wants a piece of Christmas pudding. Real Christmas pudding always has a piece of holly on the top. The British put a silver coin in it for good luck. Some people pour brandy over the pudding and light it. Then they eat it with cream. In the evening people eat cold meat, hot mince pies, Christmas cake (a kind of fruit cake), fruit and nuts.
Look! Carl Casanova is decorating a Christmas tree. How lovely it is! There are coloured lights and candles, many baubles, toys and bells, tinsel and paper chains on it. He is putting a fairy doll on top of the Christmas tree, because Englishmen traditionally decorate the top of the tree with a faire doll, an angel or a star.
Mr. Gold, Didi Diamant and D. J. Disco are singing special Christmas songs, called carols in the street. Often groups of children go from house to house, sing carols and collect money for charity. Children also sing carols at Christmas parties at school and sometimes they do a play about the birth of the baby Jesus called “Nativity Play” for their parents.
What time is it now? It’s midnight! The legend says that at midnight on Christmas Eve evil spirits (злыедухи)lose their powers for a short time and animals can speak! Many people go to church at midnight on Christmas Eve. They hear the Christmas story and sing carols. Some people go to a morning service on Christmas Day.
At Christmas everyone decorates their houses with evergreens – holly, ivy (плющ)and mistletoe. Mistletoe is a green plant with white berries. Holly bushes and trees have red berries and so people often hang a holly wreath on the front door. Twiggy Twist and Lover Boy are kissing under the mistletoe, because it’s a Christmas tradition for British people to kiss their friends and family under mistletoe.
The children listen to the teacher’s statesmen’s and say if they are right or wrong.

Do you have a holiday supper on Christmas? Do you prepare presents on this day? Do you put presents under the tree?
