The London Underground, or the Tube as Londoners call it, is the oldest underground in the world. It was opened in January1863 (1)……consisted of seven stations.

In the 1830s Charles Pearson proposed the idea of linking the centre of London (City) with the large train stations which were far away. In 1863 the first underground railway, the Metropolitan Line, was launched. Initially steam locomotives pulled gas-lit wooden carriages. (2)………, by the end of the 19th century most lines used electricity to power the trains. During World War II a lot of tube stations were used as  shelters  (3)……. people could escape during the fascists bombing of the city.

Since that time the metropolitan has changed. (4)…… it has eleven lines (only 4 of them are under the ground), 275 stations and over 400 km of railway system. Tube has become the third longest underground system in the world. It is open from 5.00 till 01.00 a.m., (5)………. some stations work at night too. In fact, the fares are ranged depending on the route, the day time and the type of the ticket.
