The Wizard of Oz

NARRATOR: Once there was a little girl called Dorothy, who lived on the great Kansas prairie in America with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry and her dog Toto. One day, when only Dorothy and Toto were at home, a whirlwind picked up their house and carried it away to a strange country. (THE WHIRLWIND DANCE)

DOROTHY: Where can I be?

GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH: You are in the eastern part of the Land of Oz, where the Munchkins live. Thank you so much for killing the Wicked Witch of the East!

DOROTHY: I have never killed anybody..

(GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH shows DOROTHY two feet in silver slippers, sticking out from under the house.)

GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH: Look! The Wicked Witch had been squashed! Those slippers are magic. They belong to you now.

DOROTHY (putting the slippers on): My name is Dorothy. Who are you?

GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH: I am the Good Witch of the North, and my sister is the Good Witch of the South. Our enemies are the Wicked Witches of the East and West. Now, thanks to you, one of them is gone!

DOROTHY: How can I get home?

GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH: Go and see the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City. Just follow the Yellow brick Road!

NARRATOR: After giving Dorothy a magic kiss to keep her safe, the Good Witch disappeared. Dorothy and Toto set off. Before long they met a scarecrow..

SCARECROW: Where are you going?

DOROTHY: We are going to see the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City.

SCARECROW: Oh, please take me with you. My head is full of straw, and I want to ask the Wizard for a brain.

NARRATOR: Soon they met a woodman working in the forest. He was made of tin.

WOODMAN: Where are you going?

DOROTHY: We are going to see the Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City.

WOODMAN: Oh, please take me with you. I dream to ask the Wizard for a heart.

LION (jumping out at them): Grrrrr!

DOROTHY (smacking his nose): Stop being such a bully!

LION: I’m sorry. I only act like that because everyone expects me to. But really I’m very frightened. Perhaps the Wizard could give me some courage.

NARRATOR: At last they came to the Emerald City. A little green man came out to meet them.

GREEN MAN: What are you doing here?

DOROTHY: We’ve come to see the Wizard.

GREEN MAN (giving out green spectacles): Follow me to the palace, please… The Wizard will see you one at a time. Dorothy can go first, because she is wearing silver slippers.

NARRATOR: Inside the room Dorothy saw an enormous bald head, with no body, arms or legs.

WIZARD (squeaky voice): I am the great Wizard. Who are you?

DOROTHY: I am Dorothy, and I’d like to go home to Kansas, please.

WIZARD: Where did you get those slippers?

DOROTHY: I accidentally killed the Wicked Witch of the east.

WIZARD: Then, before you go back to Kansas, you must kill the Wicked Witch of the West as well!

SCARECROW: My name is Scarecrow. My head is full of straw, and I want to ask you for a brain.

WIZARD: You shall have your wish when the Wicked Witch is dead!

WOODMAN: My name is Woodman of Tin. I dream to ask you for a heart.

WIZARD: You shall have your wish when the Wicked Witch is dead!

LION: My name is Lion. Perhaps you could give me some courage.

WIZARD: You shall have your wish when the Wicked Witch is dead!

L (to his friends): We will have to do as he says, or I will never get my courage!

SCARECROW: nor I my brain!

WOODMAN: Nor I my heart!

DOROTHY (crying): And I will never get back to Kansas!

NARRATOR: So they all set off to look for the Wicked Witch of the West

(the friends go)

NARRATOR: Now the Wicked Witch of the West had heard that Dorothy and her friends were coming to kill her. She sent out fierce wolves to try to destroy them.

WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: Go and destroy them! (THE WOLVES DANCE)

NARRATOR: Dorothy was captured, but she couldn’t be harmed, because the Good Witch’s magic kiss protected her.

WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: I can’t make you any harm, you are protected! Then I’ll make you scrub my floors!

DOROTHY: No, I won’t do that! (throwing the water all over the Witch)

NARRATOR: Dorothy threw the water all over the Witch. And the Witch melted away into a puddle. The Wicked Witch was dead.

WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: NO! Water will kill me!

NARRATOR: Back in Emerald City, the friends could not find Wizard anywhere, suddenly they heard somebody behind a screen.

WIZARD: What do you want?

DOROTHY: We’ve killed the Witch! And we want you to keep your promises.

WIZARD: I’ll have to think about that! Come back tomorrow.

LION: Grrr!

(the screen falls)

NARRATOR: The little man behind the screen was not a wizard at all! But he was a kind man at heart and he promised to try to help.

WIZARD: Now Scarecrow’s got a brain.... Here is a silk heart for Woodman ….And some magic medicine for Lion…

WIZARD (to the audience): That wasn’t magic. They were already clever, kind and brave. They just did not know it!

DOROTHY: But what about me?

GOOD WITCH OF THE SOUTH (appearing to the scene): Hello. I’m Good Witch of the South. You have the magic slippers, Dorothy. All you have to do is tell them where you want to go.

DOROTHY: So, I can go home right now?

GOOD WITCH OF THE SOUTH: Yes!

DOROTHY: Goodbye, my friends!

ALL: Goodbye, Dorothy! (the friends leave the scene)

DOROTHY (to her silver slippers): To Kansas, please!

NARRATOR: The next thing Dorothy knew, she was in her aunt Em’s garden.

AUNT EM: Where have you come from?

DOROTHY: From the Land of Oz! Oh, I’m so glad to be back

(she hugs her aunt, they hold hands)

NARRATOR: The end!
