HUMOUR IN DIFFERENT COUNTRIES.

A. Humour is a phenomenon which is influenced by culture. It can be difficult to say what aspects definea certain sense of humour. A nation’s wit is linked to the historical development of the country. How funny somebody finds a certain incident depends on many factors including age, personal experience, level of education and geographical location. Therefore humour is something which is not always transferablein another country. What somebody from one area may find hilariousmay not be amusingat all to somebody from another location. Whether or not someone gets a joke is determinedby their interpretation, filtered by the cultural context.

B.What about when both countries speak the same mother tongue? Does that mean that they will then share the same sense of humour, or can differences still occur? Let’s take the example of Britain and America. Time and time again, people say that Brits and Americans don’t get each other’s sense of humour. Is this true at all?

C. One of the major differences seems to be how often both nations use irony. Brits use irony on a daily basis, while it is not the foundation of American humour. There’s an opinion that Americans understand British irony (most of the time), what they don’t understand is the need to use it so frequently.

D.The American sense of humour is generally more slapstick than that in Britain. This may arisefrom a cultural difference between the two. Their jokes are more obvious and forward, a bit like Americans themselves. British jokes, on the other hand, tend to be more subtlebut sometimes with a dark or sarcastic undertone. There is usually a hidden meaning. This may stem from the fact that British culture is more reserved than American culture.

E. And what about the sense of humour in some other countries? They say that Russians have a good sense of humour. If we were to try to see the difference between let's say French and Russian humor, the main thing is that Russians are more open while expressing themselves. Russian humor may not be as "sophisticated" as French humor, but it is really quite good, open and intelligent and most importantly, Russians are ready to laugh at themselves.

F.Jokes are the most popular form of Russian humour. In Russia they are called "anekdoty". There are many jokes on different subjects in Russia; they are mostly kind and funny. Russian jokes are very well expressed in native films. A good example is a lyrical comedy that takes place on New Year's Eve. The name of it is - "The Irony of Fate" or "S lyogkim parom!”(a phrase after someone has taken a bath, shower or banya). A doctor from Moscow is having a party in a Russian banya with his friends on the 31^st of December. The guys are celebrating the doctor's engagement. After a while, the young friends become drunk and the hero accidentally flies to St. Petersburg (Leningrad at that time) instead of going to his house in Moscow to spend New Year with his fiancé. In Leningrad he meets a new lady by accidentally stumbling into her apartment - thinking that it is his own apartment. She happens to live in the same street, same building with the same apartment number in St. Petersburg as his own home in Moscow; - all the new regions in Russia look the same. It is New Year’s Eve and miracles are happening so these two fall in love and stay together. This film is shown on TV every year on the 31st of December in Russia and those who want watch it for the nine hundredth time. In Poland however the sense of humour of this film was not understood at all and the film was not a success, which only proves that what somebody from one area may find hilarious may not be amusing at all to somebody from another location.
