Тема : “ Natural disasters.”

Цели:

Практическая: систематизировать и обобщить знания учащихся по темам «Стихийные бедствия», «Погода и климат».

Образовательная: формировать у учащихся интерес к культуре народа страны изучаемого языка, расширять их кругозор.

Развивающая: развивать у учащихся память, воображение, внимание, логическое мышление.

Воспитательная: Создавать положительную мотивацию к дальнейшему изучению английского языка.

Оснащение мероприятия: презентация, корзина с заданиями, раздаточный материал, ручки, видео-ролик.

Вступительное слово ведущего

Good afternoon dear friends. I’m very glad to see you here. The weather is nice and I hope you are also fine today. We’ve gathered here to see a great contest between the ninth forms. Our contest is devoted to a very difficult but very important theme “Weather and natural disasters.” We are going to listen to some interesting information about different countries, do some riddles and… I won’t tell you all the things we are going to do. It will be a secret.

There are two teams. Well, the first team is the girls’ team. The captain of the team is …Let’s meet the members of the first team… The second team is the boys’ team. The captain of the team is … Let’s greet the members of the second team. So, your main tasks are to listen to us attentively, to be as quick as you can, not to shout and to respect everybody present here.

Let’s greet our jury…… They’ll listen to you attentively, put you certain points for your right answers and tell us the winner. So, let’s begin our contest.

Warming up- Разминка

The first round is called Warming Up. The task is : There are 3 sentences to which you have to give certain definitions and there are 5 questions to which you have to answer. You’re allowed to interrupt me in order to save time. If you don’t know the answer, you’d better hurry up to say me : “Go on!” Don’t waste your time. You’ll get one point for each correct answer. If the team doesn’t know the answer the opposite team may give a correct answer. Let’s begin.

Questions for the first team:

This flash of light is a big killer …(lightening)

It is a mountain with a hole at the top…(volcano)

It is a very loud noise with thunder and flashes of lightening… (thunderstorm)

When do we eat apples and go to school? …(in winter)

What summer months do you know?... (June, July, August)

What is the capital of Great Britain?... (London)

What do we use a sleeping bag for?... (for sleeping)

What fire can’t we control?... (wildfire)

Questions for the second team:

1)They happen after a heavy rain… (floods)

They take place in winter… (blizzards)

It is a very loud noise… (thunder)

What is the season when birds make their nests?... (spring)

What autumn months do you know? …(September, October, November)

What is the capital of Belarus?... ( Minsk is the capital of Belarus)

What do we use drinking water for?...(for drinking, cooking, washing)

It is snow and ice falling down a mountain…. (avalanche)

So, you’re nice today. Let’s ask our jury to count the points and tell us the score…….. Let’s continue.

I’m an expert- Я-знаток.

The next round is called I’m an expert . You have learnt a lot about Belarus and Great Britain. Do you know anything about the climate of these countries? The task is to give the opposite team as much information as you can so that they could answer my questions. You’ll get one point for the speaking and each team will get one point for each correct answer. We’ll begin from Belarus….

And now you’ll listen to the other team. They’ll speak about The UK….

Questions for the team who spoke about GB:

What climate does Belarus have? (Belarus has a temperate –continental climate.)

Is annual average temperature about 20 “C? (No, it is about 7 “C)

Are there any differences between the districts of Belarus?( NO, there aren’t. )

What is the climate conditioned by? ( It is conditioned by the countries inland location, domination of flat relief and relative remoteness from the Atlantic Ocean).

Questions for the team who spoke about Belarus:

Is The UK an island country? (Yes, it is.)

Is the British summer hot? ( No, it is cool and changeable.)

Is the British climate temperate? (NO, it is temperate maritime.)

Are the British Isles influenced by lakes? ( No, they are influences by the ocean.)

Hidden words.

You will get a paper with hidden words. You’ll have to find 10 adjectives connected with weather. The team who is ready raise your hands. The pictures will help you to find the words. You’ll get as many points as many words you have found.

Let’s ask our respected jury to count the points. … And let’s pass to another round.

Riddles from the barrels.

Our next round is called riddles from the barrels. Each team will get 6 riddles at the same time. You’ll read them, think them over and decide on the answer. You’ll have only three minutes for thinking. Then, you read the riddle aloud and give us your answers. Let’s begin.

And now we’ll have a musical pause to let the jury score the game. Look at our screen. Listen to the song and enjoy the melody. You can sing if you wish.

A contest for captains. “ Weather wordfind”

The captains will get scrambled crosswords. You have to find as many words as you can. There are 8 nouns connected with weather.

While the captains are busy the team will guess the names of the pictures. Look at the screen and be as quick to name the natural disaster you’ll see.

And the final round is devoted to safety rules. You usually have rest near lakes. You should know some safety rules. But I won’t tell you them, you’ll make them yourselves. I’ll give you seven sentences and you’ll have to match them to the pictures. You’ll get as many points as many correct sentences you’ll do.

If you are going to camp, plan ahead. Choose high ground for your camp.

If there is heavy lightening, stay off the trees.

Stay off bridges as they can be washed out.

If you are in a car and become washed away by water, get out and try to swim if you can.

If you are camping watch for signs of rain.
