1 слайд. Hello, my name is Denis Lipilin. I’m a student of the 10th form of lyceum №3. Today I would like to present you my work “The Volga River is the greatest river of Saratov Region. The Green Jewel of the Caspian is in Danger”.

The Volga plays an important part in the lives of Saratov citizens and in the life of all our country. The river basin covers a third of European part of Russia. Almost 60 million people live along the river. It is called Mother Volga and it is featured in Russian folklore, songs and stories.

3 слайд – видео про сброс в Волгу. Unfortunately, The Volga River has been damaged due to the high levels of pollutants discharged into the water, including chemicals from industry. It is estimated that 10 billion cubic yards of waste are dumped into the Volga River each year by the thousands of factories located on its banks. Have a look! It’s terrible!

4 слайд. Dmitry Medvedev has declared that it is very important to start cleaning the Volga immediately. He has emphasized that the most tensional environmental situation is on the river Volga.

5 слайд. That is why the subject of our project is to study the current ecological situation connected with the Volga.

The goals of our work are to familiarize our peers with the vital information connected with the river and the ways of solving the problems, and to encourage young generation to protect the Volga.

6 слайд. The Volga River is located in Russia and it is Europe's longest river. Insects, anurans, snakes, fish and water birds can find sustenance in the Volga. Scientists count about 70 species of fish and there are 40 species of commercial fish among them (the most important are: pike-perch, sazan, fresh-water catfish, pike, sterlet).

7 слайд. A large number of people living on the banks, industrial enterprises that take its water for their own needs, thousands of tons of cargo transported on it – all these factors that occur over a long period have caused environmental problems of the Volga.

Specialists who deal with the problem say that nuclear power stations bring a lot of harm to every living thing. Plankton, tadpoles and fish are dying.

8 слайд. Another problem is increase of the amount of algae. They grow along the banks and release about 300 kinds of organic substances, most of which are toxic. Died off plants fall onto the bottom of the river and decompose there. It causes the increase of the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus, and as a result, it leads to secondary pollution of the river system.

9 слайд. Moreover, there are a lot of sunk ships in the Volga. It also leads to water pollution. The remains of fuel, chemical waste are washed away into the river.

10 слайд. To prevent further destructive process we should do the following things: ban using pesticides, industrial livestock complex, landfills and parking places in special areas along the banks of the Volga.

11 слайд. Recreate the natural microflora of the river. Firstly, it is necessary to optimize the work of existing hydropower plants to eliminate the consequences that exist. Secondly, it is necessary to recreate the lost spawning places of different breeds. It will require the cultivation of new fish. Perhaps, the polluted Volga River will not be able to adapt at once, however, persistence of people will be able to change the situation.

12 слайд. Restore the coastal zone. Many of the banks of the Volga are blurred, as the soil was not ready for such lightning changes. This brought additional water pollution. To change the situation, it is necessary to strengthen extensive planting of seedlings along the shore.

13 слайд. Transit to other energy sources. In order to get rid of the consequences of human intervention, it is necessary to provide resources from other sources of energy in the long term. This will help to abandon the hydroelectric power station over time, which will lead to a natural restoration of the environmental situation.

14 слайд. To familiarize our peers with the vital information connected with the Volga and the ways of solving the problems, and to encourage young generation to protect the Volga, I share the information with my classmates and I have conducted a poll among 28 students.

15 слайд. It helps me find out that all the students worry about the quality of drinkable water. They think that everyone should take an active part in the cleaning not only the Volga but also its feeders. Such public opinion lets us hope that we will be able to save the great Volga for the future generations.

16-17 слайды. As for me, I have decided on help the nature. So, every year I clean the banks of the Volga near my country cottage.

18 слайд. To sum up, it has become clear that without human intervention and constant monitoring nothing will change for better.

Is it worth doing something in such a situation? Of course! Save the great Volga for the future generations together! The smallest contribution will be thankfully received!

19 слайд. Otherwise, our children will face unsolvable natural disasters, which will bring the full-flowing Volga.
