The Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic also known as Soviet Bashkiria formed as an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Russian SFSR in 1919 of March. Today it is known as Bashkortostan. Bashkir ASSR was the first Autonomous Soviet Republic in RSFSR. As you know from the history, the Bashkirs had a nomadic lifestyle and they finally give up nomadic life in the 19th century. They occupied the area of 143,600 km2 in the far south-eastern corner of European Russia, bounded on the east by the Ural Mountains and within seventy kilometers of the Kazakhstan, adopting the agricultural lifestyle. A major battleground of the Russian Civil War, in 1919 Bashkiria was the first ethnic region to be designated an autonomous republic of Russia under the new communist government with their own state-city Ufa, emblem and flag.

The republic declared its sovereignty within the Soviet Union on 11 October 1990 as Bashkir Soviet Socialist Republic, and in 1992 it declared full independence. Nowadays we celebrate the 11th of October and people don`t work at that day. The republic has rich mineral resources, especially petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, manganese, copper, salt. The Soviet government built a variety of heavy industries on that resource base.

  • State-city Ufa – город-столица Уфа
  • Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic – БАССР
  • Nomads – кочевники
  • Occupy – занимать территорию
  • Battleground – сражение
  • Russian Civil War – гражданская война
  • Petroleum – нефть
  • Natural gas – природный газ
  • Iron ore – железная руда
  • Manganese – марганец
  • Copper – медь
  • Salt – соль

T: Do you understand the text? What about it?

Ch: Дети отвечают на вопросы учителя (примерные ответы: Yes! It is about BASSR).

T: Now I` ll give you some cards with questions and you must answer them. But first, make small groups.

Ch: (делятся на микрогруппы из 4-х учеников) Отвечают на вопросы.

T: Are you ready? Rise your hands.

  1. What does it mean BASSR?
  2. When did it form? In what year?
  3. What kind of lifestyle did Bashkirs have earlier in 18th century?
  4. What was the area they occupied?
  5. When did it declare its Sovereignty?
  6. Which mineral resources Bashkortostan reach for?

III. Заключительный этап
