-TV destroys the family.

-TV kills off the reading habit/

Which arguments against watching TV do you think are the most convincing? Explain your choice.

(чтение программ британского телевидения- BBC 1, BBC 2)

d) you 'll hear three opinions about the British television. Which of these belongs to a teacher, a pupil, and a politician?(удоскичитаютучащиеся).

- What's their opinion on the following? Fill in the chart.

Television is a great way to learn. It's easier than
reading a book. I wish we could watch more television at
school. But on the whole, most telly programmes are rub-
bish, too serious. Television should be entertaining, you
know, fun. I wish there were more police shows and sports.
And more adverts, too.

British television is the best in the world. We have a
lot of variety and good quality. We try to entertain and
educate. That's why so many British television pro-
grammes are exported. We need more channels and more
broadcasting. Up to 20 hours a day, for example.

The kids come home and turn on the box. Parents
have no control. And some of the programmes are really
violent. There are terrible problems with reading and writ-
ing. Kids don't read books any more. They spend a lot of
time just sitting and watching the telly.

e)Let's speak about TV programmes in Russia.

Look through the following choice of TV programmes and make a draft broadcasting schedule of what your parents, friends, children (pupils) would rather see on this or

that day of the week.

1)On Monday (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) my mother(father, son(daughter) husband(wife), friend(s), pupils) would choose (like to see, enjoy, decide upon) some...

...documentary film(s) about historical events in Russia or abroad. ...old but enjoyable comedies (plays). ...old/new feature films. ...sports program(s) or music show(s). ...cartoons and other popular programs for children.

...quiz shows ("The Field of Wonders", "Who Wants to Become a Millionaire?" etc.) .."The Travellers' Club" or "The Animal Planet". ...talk show(s)

...football/hockey/basketball match(es). ...program(s) on education/science/culture. ...concert(s) of rock/pop/classical music. ...program(s) on poetry/art/religion. ...news program(s).

2)Ask your partners if they or their friends (relatives) would like to see this or that programme next week. Let them express their likes and dislikes.

-Would you like to see...? Would you enjoy watching...? Or would you rather see.../choose...?

-I (he, she, they) can't stand....; I am keen on....;he is crazy about....; They are very fond of....; She is over- enthusiastic about...; I really( never) enjoy...; I hate (dislike)...

IV. TV programmes differ greatly by their content and subject matter. Different age groups may regard one and the same TV programme differently. They may use different words while speaking about the same broadcasts.

Speak of a number of programmes from the viewpoint of a ten-year-old child a teenager, a young person, an old-age pensioner. Use the substitution table.

VI And now Let's discuss the pros and cons of watching TV. You have a list of arguments and counter-arguments,which can help us formulate our opinion about television .

Television is necessary for keeping the public informed of the world and national events.

Television is the main source of entertainment.

Television seems to present too much of a fantasy world.

Having TV sets at home, we forget how to communicate.

Lots of TV programmes are based onconversation into which the viewer is involved.

Because of television people are losing touch with one another and becoming more selfish.

Television helps us settle different personal problems.

TV suggests great possibilities for education.

Television wastes too much of our valuable time.

Either television can use you, or you can use television for your own needs and interests.

Watching TV is always a pleasant change after everyday activities

Thinkof those lonely people who have no better companion their TV set.

Seeing has ever been so powerful! Television cultivates our viewing habits, taster and

manners.

Televisionstimulatescuriosity.

Without TV we shall find more time for reading, sports and games:.

Television helps us understand the world around.

Television affects our health.

VII.Choose a pair of statements presenting an argument and a counter-arguments ( "on the one hand...but on the other hand...") and explain why you think so

E.g. It is true that television affects our health. People move less. They have to sit in front of the screen for quite a time forgetting that it tires the eyes. Besides, a TV set makes much noise. But on the other hand, watching TV is a good change after work or study. You can relax, forget about your troubles and have a really good time.

VIIIComment upon any of the following statements:

To watch or not to watch television is one's own business.

Television affects people as much as people do.

Television is a part of modern culture. We shouldn't forget about it.

Television is a means of communication.

Television means technical progress.

IX So , on the one hand TV plays a great role in our life, but on the other hand there a lot of problems connecting with TV and this problem we 've tried to discuss during our lesson.

I would like to finish our lesson with a proveb:

- Too much water drowned the miller ( what is the Russian equivalent to this proverb?). Все хорошо в меру.

H/w

Work out some recommendations that could be addressed to TV producers in our country and abroad from: a) a parent; b) a nine-year-old boy; c) an eighteen-year-old girl; d) an old lady; e) a teacher.( we'll have a role-playing next lesson).
