Pupils talk about different explorers they know about from history or geography

Captain James Cook was born on the 7^th of November 1728 in Yorkshire, England.

At the age of 17, he 1)started/was starting working on a ship. During his time on the ship, he 2) began/was beginning to study different subjects: algebra, geometry, navigation and astronomy.

In June 1757, Cook 3) joined/was joining one of the King`s ships as a captain`s assistant.

Show some pictures of James Cook and see if pupils know who he is, if not, tell them. Pupils will read the story about James Cook, his trips and discoveries. They must answer a question: did he do a lot of things for people`s understanding of geography?

Cook`s second trip was in 1772. It took 4 years. He was the head of an expedition. The ships reached New Zealand. Cook brought back a detailed map of New Zealand and of the Australian west coast.

James Cook was a great explorer. He made the most complete maps of the area for that time. He changed the people`s understanding of geography.
