Read the text «Born in the USA- the Story of Jeans» and choose the correct alternative to answer the following questions.

Believe it or not, it was Columbus who started the jeans fashion. He didn’t wear them himself, of course, but he did use denim for the sails that took him and his ships to the New World in 1492. The strong cloth that he needed came from a place called Nimes in France, and that is how denim got its name. Denims have been in fashion ever since screen idols like James Den, and rock’n roll heroes like Elvis Presley started wearing theirs in fifties films. And when Marilyn Monroe appeared in hers the trend became official. But even though it was the movie stars who made jeans fashionable, they weren’t the first ones to wear them…

Jeans were first made by a man called Levi Strauss who lived on the West Coast. In the 1850s he started making tough working clothes for farmers and gold miners who wanted trousers that lasted, not ones which were fashionable. The trousers became known as “jeans” because the cloth they were made from came from Genoa in Italy. The jeans makers dyed the cloth indigo-blue. Denim jeans were born.

By the 1940s, they were several big names in the jeans business and the competition started hotting up. So the makers decided to sew a label onto the back pocket of their jeans so that everybody could see which make they were wearing.

Not everyone looks as good in jeans as James Dean did in his, but these days everybody can find a pair that fits. New-looking jeans are not really “in”. In fact, faded ones that are full of holes often cost more than true blue ones. In the past, people worked hard to get out of denims, but now they pay almost any price to get into them!
