Dialogue 1.
YouaregoingtojoinEnglishcourses.Ring and ask:
- where they are going to be
- how long it is going to be
- how much you will have to pay
- what documents you need.
-Hello, my name is Elena Ivanova. I'm calling to find out about English courses. Can you help me?
- I think I can. Do you want to ask any questions?
- Yes, please. I'd like to know where the classes are going to be actually.
- There are two places. First of all you can come to Rostov, 33 SadovyStreet, we have some classes on the second floor there. Or we have classes in school number four.
- I think that it is more convenient for me to come to school number four. Are the teachers the same in both places?
- Yes, they are. All our teachers are qualified and experienced.
- Have they ever been in an English-speaking country?
- Most of our teachers have taught English for a long time and lived in Britain or the USA.
- Are all of them school teachers?
- There are some university teachers as well.
- Thank you very much. How long is it going to be?
- It depends on your level of English. We offer six levels, and each is about four months.
- Oh, I see, thank you. But I have another question. How much will I have to pay?
- Every level costs about two thousand rubles, but if you don't visit classes regularly, you may need to repeat a level, and to pay extra.
- That sounds quite reasonable, I think. Do you have all needed licenses?
- Yes, of course. We have a state license.
- Do you give any certificates?
- Yes, we give a certificate after you complete each level and pass the level test successfully.
- This suits me, I think. The last question, please. What documents do I need to bring to study at your courses?
- You will need a passport and two photos three by four. That's all. Come to school number four from four till eight any working day and we'll see to it.
- OK. Thank you. Good bye.
Dialogue 2.
You and your foreign friend are discussing the plans for the weekend. Discuss the following questions:
- when he\she is free,
- when and where it will be better to go
- why you should visit these places
–I say, Natalie, what are we going to do on Sunday?
- I haven’t made up my mind yet. If the weather is fine, I think we can spend our day off in the summer house.
- That sounds great! But I’d prefer something different. Let’s spend our weekend in Rostov.
- Why? Don’t you like our settlement?
- I don’t mind staying here, but it doesn’t give me a great pleasure to work in the orchard or in the garden.
- Nobody will make you work. Anyway, we have a lot of interesting places to visit.
- I am listening to your suggestions.
- Fist of all, we can go to our new cinema and watch an interesting film.
- And do you know what is on?
- They show a detective film with an unusual plot. There are a lot of criminals, fights and secrets in this film. In a word, this film has everything you like.
- Right you are. I am fond of such films.
- What next?
- Then we can have a snack. I know a marvelous place where they cook wonderfully.
- Really. You’ve never told me about this place.
- You know, seeing is believing!
- Right, on Sunday we’ll check if it is as good as you have described.
Dialogue 3.
You and your foreign friend are going on excursion. Discuss the following questions:
- when and where it will be better to go,
- who you will take with
–I say, Natalie, when will you show me your settlement?
- I haven’t made up my mind yet. If the weather is fine, I think we can organize our sightseeing tour on Sunday.
- I’ve heard the weather forecast and it promises a nice day on Sunday.
- O.k. one problem is out. Do you mind taking my friends with us?
- It will be even more interesting. I’ll have several guides instead of one. What shall we visit?
- We have a lot of interesting places to visit.
What next?
- Then we can go to our local museum. There you can learn much about the history of our settlement.
- Oh, Great! I’ve always been interested in history. I hope it is not the end of our tour?
- Of course, no. Then we can have a snack. I know a marvelous place where they cook wonderfully.
- Really. You’ve never told me about this place.
- You know, seeing is believing!
- Right, on Sunday we’ll check if it is as good as you have described
Dialogue 4.
You are going to write a report about environmental problems. Discuss with the editor:
- what problems you should write about,
- what title this report will have,
- by what time the report should be finished.
– For decades people didn’t take control of environmental protection. It’s high time to take practical steps in order to protect nature.
- What do you mean by saying “to take practical steps”.
- It means that we should do our best to protect nature.
- Let’s write an article about this problem and describe environmental problems.
- Speaking about the problem of environmental protection, we can’t but mention the air we breathe. Everybody can see smoke coming out of tall factory chimneys. In big cities thousands of cars and plants add tons of poisonous substances into the atmosphere every day.
- There is another problem we can’t forget about. It is our water.
- I agree with you. Today our lakes and rivers are polluted as well. Fish can’t live and people can’t swim in some of them.
- Do you think we can drink such water?
- Of course not! It may be harmful for your health. That’s why people invented purifying systems.
- I see. And what about writing some peaces of advice to people?
- That’s a great idea. Let’s write that it is necessary to plant a lot of trees which will supply us with oxygen.
- What should we do with litter?
- Oh, that’s quite easy. We must recycle things we don’t want or cannot use any more. Old newspapers, for example, can become new paper. Old glass can become new glassware, to say nothing of plastic jars and bottles. We must also learn not to litter.
- I think our article will help people understand that environmental protection is of great importance.
- I hope so. I suggest naming the article “environment is in crisis”
- That’s right. We should finish it by next Monday.
- It takes us even less time if we’ll begin writing right now.
Dialogue 5.
Your class has won a competition and got the grant. Explain to a foreign journalist:
- who gave you that grant
- what you are going to do with this money.
- Olga, I think that you are the best person to tell me how your class managed to get this grant?
- You see, our teacher of geography advised us to create an ecological organization that would help to protect environment. We just followed her advice.
- It gets more and more interesting. Can you describe what your organization can do for protecting the environment?
- First of all we publish our newspaper every week where we describe environmental problems and write some peaces of advice. For example, we write that it is necessary to plant a lot of trees which will supply us with oxygen.
- Oh, I see. What else?
- We also take care of animals and birds. We feed them, treat them and seek new masters for them. As for birds, every year we make new starling-houses so that every bird can have its own house.
- That is a really useful job. And could you tell what organization gave you that grant.
- It’s not a secret at all. This year Russian government has announced a contest on the most active ecological organization. We just tried to take part in the project and won the grant.
- And my next question. What are you going to do with this grant? I mean what you are going to buy?
- We are going to buy nothing. We’d like to open a refuge for animals. It will help to reduce the number of homeless animals. I think it will be great.
- I wish you good luck.
- Thank you.
Dialogue 6.
Your friend has just returned from an English-speaking country. Ask him about his trip:
- where he was,
- what he liked most of all
- why he liked that places.
- Hello, … ! I haven’t seen you for ages. Where have you been?
- I’ve just returned from England. I spent two weeks there.
- Oh, great! Did you enjoy the trip?
- Yes, of course, it was great. I was impressed with this country.
- Can you tell me what you liked most of all?
- With great pleasure. The first thing I liked was the famous Big Ben. Only this place can make you feel the real English atmosphere. Only listen how this clock strikes 5 times and go to a café to enjoy famous 5 o’clock tea.
- I fully agree with you. If I were you, I would visit this place as well. And what else?
- I think that there is nothing like St. Paul’s Cathedral which was designed by the famous architect, Christopher Wren. Today St. Paul’s is the largest church in England. Its high dome contains a famous Whispering gallery. It is a unique place. When something is said on one side of the gallery, it’s clearly heard on the opposite side.
- Yes, I’ve heard about this place. I also know that there are a lot of castles and palaces in England.
- Of course it is true. And if you want to feel yourself a queen or a king, you should visit one of the English palaces. BuckinghamPalace, for example, is the official home of the British royal family in central London. Many tourists stand outside the Palace to watch the ceremony of Changing the Guard.
- It must be a magnificent sight! By the way, are there some exotic sights?
- Oh, if you want to see something extraordinary, take the plane and fly to Scotland to visit Lake Loch Ness. This lake is famous for its monster called Nessie. Many people claim to have seen it, but scientists didn’t prove its existence. Maybe you will be lucky and you will see the famous monster.
- I think next year I’ll certainly visit this country!
- Of course you must see everything yourself. I recommend you to visit all these places and of course this country.
Dialogue 7.
While being on excursion, you have lost your way. Ask the passerby:
- where your hotel is,
- what transport you should take,
- how time it will take
-where the bus stop is.
- Excuse me, please, can you help me?
- I see you are the foreigner? How can I help you?
- You see I‘ve lost my way? Can you tell me where Ritz Hotel is?
- Let me think… I think the best way is to go by taxi, as it is quite far from here.
- But I don’t have enough money with me.
-Then you have to go by bus.
- What bus should I take?
- You’d better take bus number 12; it will bring you to the hotel. You’ll need only to cross the street.
- And how much time will it take there?
-I think about 45 minutes.
- Ok it suits me perfectly well.
- Where is the bus stop?
- The bus stop is near that bank. Do see it, right at the corner?
- Oh. Yes, thank you very much.
- Not at all.
Dialogue 8.
You want to buy something fashionable in one of the European shops. Ask a salesperson to give you some pieces of advice:
- what to buy,
- if it suits and fits you,
- how much it costs,
- where the cash desk is.
- Are you being attended, Madam?
- Not yet.
-I can help you. What shall I do for you?
- I need a blouse. Something bright.
- We’ve got a good choice of blouses of all shades. Will you try on this yellow one?
- Oh, it’s marvelous. But could you show the pink one.
- Yes, of course. It’s very beautiful. I think the colour and the style are becoming you.
- But I can’t make up my mind which one to choose.
- You can try them on in the fitting room. Follow me.
- Well, have a look, please.
- The yellow blouse doesn’t fit me. I need a size larger.
- And what about the other one?
- The other one is too loose in shoulders.
- Try on this blouse please. It is of good quality. I hope it will suit and fit you.
- That’s another cup of tea. It is just what I’m looking for. Where is the cash desk?
- It is at the end of the hall. Thank you for your purchase. Come again.
Dialogue 9.
You are going to make a report about an English-speaking country. Ask your teacher to help you:
- to choose a country for description,
- to find information about the country,
- to determine the terms of finishing the report.
- So, …I should write a report about Britain.
- Yes, right you are. But you should choose some specific topic, for example, famous people, sights or something else.
- I think it will be interesting for readers to learn about the most wonderful sights in Britain.
- I agree with you I can help you to determine the best ones.
- I think I already know them.
- Please describe them.
- With great pleasure. The first thing I’d like to write about is the famous Big Ben. Only this place can make you feel the real English atmosphere. Only listen how this clock strikes 5 times and go to a café to enjoy famous 5 o’clock tea.
- I fully agree with you. If I were you, I would write this place as well.
- Unfortunately we don’t have something like that in Russia. Go on please.
-in England there are a lot of palaces and castles. I’d also like to write about them. TakeBuckinghamPalace, for example. It is the official home of the British royal family in central London. Many tourists stand outside the Palace to watch the ceremony of Changing the Guard.
- It must be a magnificent sight! By the way, are you going to write about exotic sights?
- Perhaps, yes. I’ll write about Lake Loch Ness in Scotland. This lake is famous for its monster called Nessie. Many people claim to have seen it, but scientists didn’t prove its existence.
- That sounds great. But don’t forget we have little time to finish the report.
- And what are the terms?
- You should finish it by next Monday.
- It’s not a problem. It takes me even less time if I’ll begin writing right now.
Dialogue 10.
Your friend rings you up and asks you to meet him\her at the airport. Ask him\her about:
- his flight number,
- his day of arrival,
- places he\she would like to see in your native place.
- Natalie is speaking.
- Hello Natalie. It’s Ann. How are you?
- I’m fine, thank you. And you?
- Everything is ok with me. I’m coming in two days. Can you meet me at the airport?
-Yes, of course. Do you mean the airport which is in Rostov?
- Right. Foreign planes land either in Rostov or in Moscow.
- And what is you flight number?
- My flight number is 123. We are to arrive at 14 sharp.
- It’s quiet comfortable for us. The next bus to my settlement is at 14.45. We’ll have enough time to get at the bus station.
-What will you show me in your settlement?
- We have a lot of interesting places to visit.
- Right, soon we’ll be able to check if it is as good as you have described. Good bye.
- Bye. And don’t worry; I’ll be at the airport to meet you.
Dialogue 11.
You are at your foreign friend’s place. You want to join a sport center. Discuss:
- what sport you will go in for,
- when you will visit the sport center.
- Do you go in for sports?
- Unfortunately, I don’t. But I think it will be great to go to a sport center.
- I believe so. Let’s join a sport center.
- That is a good idea. What sport should we chose? You see, each sport has its advantages.
- I know that. Going jogging, for example, is very good for health as you breathe the fresh air and exercise your body. Jogging keeps you fit the whole day.
- But in this case you don’t need to join a sport club.
- Oh, yes. But we can go in for swimming. From my point of view, swimming is also an excellent exercise. It doesn’t strain muscles as the water supports the body weight. It also helps flexibility, stamina and heart capability.
- It sounds great, but else can you suggest?
- Cycling! It is wonderful for balance. In fact you can practice it both outdoors and indoors on a stationary bike.
- But it is so boring. Let’s think more.
- I’ve got it. I think you will like it. Dancing or aerobics! I think it is the greatest way to combine pleasure and fitness.
- Yes I agree with you, pretty much like jogging dancing is one of the best ways to keep fit. But now we should compare our timetables. When are you free?
- I’m free on Monday and Wednesday. What about you?
- The same with me. So next Monday we’ll go in for aerobics!
- Agreed.
Dialogue 12.
You are going to join English courses. But your friend thinks it is useless to learn foreign languages, it takes a lot of time and effort and you can hire an interpreter any time you need. Try to make your friend changes his\her mind.
-Hello, Ann. How are you? What have you been doing all this time?
- Hi, Natalie. I’m ok. I’ve found a new job. I’ve been working in a restaurant for 2 month already.
- I’m pleased to hear that. By the way are you still attending the course of the English language?
- No, I’m not. I gave up that course.
- Why? You were so satisfied with the course. What happened?
- Well I’ve thought about it many times. I’ve come to a conclusion that it is not necessary to learn English.
- Why do think so.
- First of all, it takes a lot of time and energy. I work in a restaurant, as I’ve told you, and mostly I work the whole day. I just don’t have time for that.
- Oh, don’t exaggerate. Everybody works, but still people attend courses. I’d also like to attend.
- I don’t understand you. Why should we do everything ourselves. Any time anywhere we can hire an interpreter for this purpose.
- I don’t agree with you. Imagine you’ve lost your way in the USA, what will you do?
- Oh, this case is an exception.
- But I can give you one more example. An interpreter charges from 170-200 euro per day. Are you ready to pay so much?
- I don’t think so. You’ve made me change my mind. Let’s go to the course together
Dialogue 13.
You are interviewing a well-known foreign singer. Ask him about:
- his\her first step in show-business
- when he\she decided to become a singer,
- what plans he\she has for the future.
-Kylie, may I ask you several questions?
- It will be a great pleasure for me to answer them.
- What was your first step in show-business?
- Well, my career began as a child actor in TV shows. I had the image of a curious girl who was interested in everything from politics to sport.
- And when did you decide to become a singer?
- When I was in an Australian soap opera called “Neighbours”, I met Jason Donovan. Together we sang “Especially for You”. That song made me immediately popular. So I thought that singing would be better for me.
- And how would you characterize your image.
- Well in the 1980s I had a very different image. I was the friendly girl-next-door but this changed in the early ‘90s. Now I’m a very popular singer.
- I can add that you are a rare example of a pretty confident young woman.
- Thank you for the compliment.
- By the way what are your plans for the future?
- My new album will appear in a month and then I am going in the around the world tour.
- I wish you good luck.
- Thank you. The same to you.
Dialogue 14.
You are discussing with your friend what helps people to become prosperous: talent, education, profitable marriage or something else?
- give at least two facts to support your point of view
- make sure if your friend shares your point of view
- Our life is so difficult, that it is not easy to say what a person needs to be prosperous. I suggest discussing this problem.
- Not a bad idea. There are several points of view on this problem. Do you know them?
- Of course. Some people think that all a person needs is a good education.
-Do you agree with this statement?
- Partly. And the reason is that today young people may have even 2 diplomas but they can’t find a prestigious job just because they don’t have a job experience. And the question is where they should get this experience? Everybody wants to have qualified employers.
- Oh, I see. Then all you need is a profitable marriage. Am I right?
- Certainly not. Having a lot of money doesn’t mean to be prosperous.
- and what is a way out?
- the only way leading to prosperity is doing only things you really want to.
- what do you mean?
- It means to choose a profession that really suits you. Your work must bring you pleasure.
- And what about the family?
- It is also of primary importance. If a person doesn’t have a family, he or she can’t be prosperous in a broad sense of this word. Family is your beloved people who will be always with you no matter what can happen.
- Maybe the secret of prosperity is talent?
- Yes, we can say. You need to have a talent to be the best worker and the best wife at the same time. And what do you think?
- I think you are absolutely right. You need talent, first and foremost, then you need good family relationships and of course education.
Dialogue 15.
Your friend often goes to McDonald's explain him:
- that it is very unhealthy
- that it causes obesity and problems with stomach,
- how to keep a healthy diet.
- Hello, Natalie, where are you going?
- I am going to McDonalds. I’m very hungry, and to my mind it is the best place. The prices are low and the food is delicious.
- But it is very unhealthy. You can ruin your health by eating all these cheeseburgers and hamburgers.
- Don’t believe all you hear. All Americans eat such food and the feel well.
- Don’t you know they have a real problem called obesity. Do you want to be fat as well?
- Of course not. But all people don’t become overweighed. Some of them stay slim as before.
- But most of them have problems with stomach and digestion.
- I’ve never thought about it before. So what shall I eat then?
- I’m reading a book called “Be fit Stay slim”. It tells you to eat lots of potatoes and wholemeal bread and baked beans.
- I thought wholemeal bread and all those things were fattening.
- No, it’s sweets that are fattening. We should eat less fat and less sugar. Theу book advises eating lots of fruit.
- That’s easy in the summer. But it is not easy in winter.
- It’s possible in winter too. You can freeze some things – frozen raspberries are very good.
- So I understand I should eat only the right food such as milk, diary products, fish, vegetables and a lot of fruit, especially apples, as “An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away”.
- I am proud of you, you are a good pupil!
Dialogue 16.
Your friend thinks that computer is harmful for health. Try to make your friend changes his\her mind. Say:
- there are special computer spectacles
- you can save your time with the help of computer
- you can use the Internet.
- I’ve made up my mind to spend as little time before a computer monitor as possible.
- Why? Who made you think so?
- Recently I’ve seen a TV programme called “Health”. It tells about a harmful effect which a computer has over health.
- It is getting interesting. Go on.
- First of all our eyes are suffering. Your eyesight can become worse.
- But today there are so many ways to solve this problem. The easiest one is to buy special spectacles for computer work.
- Ok. Maybe you are right. But while working or playing on computer our back is also suffering.
- It is a hundred per cent true. Here nobody can help but you. It is you who must control your carriage.
- And what are the benefits of computer?
- Oh computer has a lot of benefits. First of all it makes your work easier. You can copy some information in one document and then you can insert that information in another document. Oh you can have the Internet in your computer the advantages of which I can enumerate without stopping.
- It will be interesting for me to listen to you.
- As the Internet is a computer system that allows millions of computer users around the world to exchange information, you can find all kinds of information on the internet. Besides you can surf the net (spend time looking at websites for fun), visit websites and chatrooms, download files from the Internet, email people or chat with them, shop online or work online.
- It is like a new world where all information is available! Perhaps I’ll change my mind.
