T: Good afternoon, boys and girls, parents and teachers. Today is the 2ndof March, the last week of winter and the first week of spring. Russian people name it “maslenitsa”. And, speaking about “maslenitsa”, we are to speak about other holidays in our country and country we are studying now — the USA.
So, the topic of our discussion today, is “American and Russian Holidays”.
We have two groups of children, who can speak about this topic. But first let us repeat the names of the holidays we are going to speak:

P1: New Year’s Day celebrates the start of a new year. Americans celebrate New Year’s Day on the first day of January, but the celebration actually begins on December 31. Some people stay up all night, blow horns and whistles, shake hands, kiss, hug, sing, dance, shout “Happy New Year!” at midnight to announce the beginning of a new year.
P2: On January, 15 Americans celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King. He was a minister who fought against racial discrimination. To remember Martin Luther King, many Americans go to crutch or participate in public ceremonies.
P3: Americans celebrate St Valentine’s Day on February, 14. It is a day of love and friendship. The people decorate their classrooms with big red hearts, send greeting cards and give red roses and chocolate to the people whom they love.
P4: On the third Monday in February Americans celebrate Presidents Day. They honour George Washington, the first American president, and Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth American president, for their honesty.
P5: Americans celebrate St Patrick’s Day on 17th of March. It is an Irish religious holiday. The people decorate the houses, schools, streets with green shamrocks and wear something green on this day.
P6: Easter is celebrated on a Sunday in April or May. The people color eggs and the children find a basket of candy that the Easter Bunny has left them on that day.
P7: Americans honor their mothers on second Sunday in May. This day is called Mother’s Day. They usually buy this Mum a nice greeting card and flowers and have a big dinner together with their grandparents.
P8: They also honor their farther and celebrate the Father’s Day on the third Sunday in June. They usually bring him breakfast in bed and buy his a greeting card and a present.
P9: Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4, because on the 4th of July 1776 American people free and independent from England. They usually have a big picnic in their neighbourhood and watch a fireworks display at night.
P10: Columbus Day is celebrated on the 12th of October, because Christopher Columbus discovered America on October 12, 1492.
P11: American children celebrate Halloween on October 31. Theywear masks and colorful costumes, such as ghosts, witches, skeletons; they walk door to door in neighborhood and shout “trick or treat”. They decorate the houses and schools in traditional Halloween colors: orange and black. They make jack-o-lanterns out of pumpkins and try to look scary on that day.
P12: Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November. This is a family holiday. They gather to give thanks for all the good things in their lives and a big turkey dinner.
P13: Americans celebrate Christmas on December, 25. It is the religious holiday and one of the happiest holidays of the year, because it is the day that Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
They people buy presents for all their friends and relatives; decorate a tree with ornaments and lights and prepare special foods and cookies.
Santa Claus climbs down the chimney and leaves the presents under a Christmas tree.
In the Morning, Americans open their presents and then go to church. They wish each other: “Merry Christmas!”
Many children sing “Jingle, bells”.

It is a religious holiday. It is one of the happiest holidays of the year. People buy gifts for their friends and relatives and prepare special foods: roast turkey and a pudding. The people choose a tree and decorate it with ornaments and lights.

P1: The first holiday in a year is New Year’s Day. The Russian people see the New Year in at midnight on the 31st of December. They greet the New Year with champagne and listen to the Kremlin chimes beating 12 o’clock. They decorate a tree with ornaments and lights and wait for Father Frost to come and give the children a present.
P2: Christmas is celebrated on the 7th of January. It is a religious holiday and a lot of people go to church services on that day.
P3: On the 4th of February Russian people celebrate St Valentine’s Day. It is a day of love and friendship. The people decorate their classrooms with big red hearts, send greeting cards and give red roses and chocolate to the people whom they love.
P4: We celebrate Day of the Defender of Motherland on the 23rd of February. The girls and women give the men greeting card and present on that day.
P5: On the 8th of March we celebrated Women’s Day, when men do everything about the house, cook meals and give women and girls flowers.
P6: On the 1st of April we celebrate All Fool’s Day, when everybody tries to play a trick. For example, they mix salt and sugar, put something such as “Kiss me!” on the smb’s back or say that something is wrong with his dress.
P7: On the 1st of May we have a Day of Solidarity or May Day. We meet together, go to the demonstrations with flowers, pictures for peace and love.
P8: The greatest national holiday in our country is Victory Day. On the 9st of May, 1945 our army completely defeated the German fascists and the Great Patriotic War ended. We never forget those, who died to defend our Motherland. We honor their memory with a minute of silence and put flowers on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.
P9:Independence Day is a new holiday in our country. On the 12th of June 1992, the first President of Russia was elected. His name is Boris Eltsin.
P10: On the 1st of September the Russian pupils and students celebrate the Day of Knowledge.
P11: On the 12th of December we celebrate the Constitution Day.
P12: At the end of February or at the beginning of March the people in our country celebrate “Maslenitsa”. During this holiday they celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
In old times people usually cooked pancakes, had fires, burnt straw scarecrows of winter, they sang song and danced.
Now during «“Maslenitsa” week» people always cook pancakes. They invite their friends and eat pancakes with sour cream, butter, sugar, honey.
