SUMMER HOLIDAYS

Summer holidays is the time when we don’t go to school and we have no classes. It’s our free time, when we have a rest. We have three months of wonderful time.

Some of us spend their holidays in the country. As for me, I like visiting my granny who lives in a small village on the Volga river. Last summer I was there with my elder brother. We went swimming in the river and walked in the forest, played football and went fishing. It was fun!

I also like travelling. In July my parents and I went to Greece. It was a wonderful trip. We enjoyed the nature and the culture of this beautiful country. I learnt a lot about the history and traditions of the country and the people. I had a great time!

And in August I was at the Sports Camp on the Black sea. We had a lot of fun swimming and sunbathing, taking part in shows, sports and outdoor activities. I made a lot of new friends there.

At the end of the school year, we usually plan our summer holidays. We can visit our granny in the country and enjoy swimming in the river, fishing, walking in the forest. We can also go to other cities and countries and see famous landmarks, visit museums and theatres, go souvenir shopping. And of course, we can have wonderful time in the teen camps. We can do sports, play football and volleyball in the Sports Camp. We can go hiking and learn how to put up a tent, make fire and survive in the forest in the Adventure Camp. We can have dancing and acting classes, play a music instrument in the Arts Camp. As for me, I’m going to spend my summer holidays at my dacha and at the teen camp “Berezka”. I hope I’ll have fun there.

MY HOBBIES AND INTERESTS

A hobby is what people like doing in their free time. There are thousands of different hobbies: gardening, travelling, doing sports, cooking, drawing, collecting things. If you have a hobby, you can learn a lot of new facts about the world. Most people choose a hobby according to their likes and dislikes.

One of the most popular hobbies is collecting different things. People collect stamps and badges, coins and soft toys, books and pictures. When I was a child, I collected badges. My father collects coins and he has a very big collection of more than a hundred coins from all over the world.

I like listening to music. I have a good collection of CDs with my favourite kinds of music. I also have some favourite singers and I collect information about them.

Playing computer games has become a very popular hobby today. But many people prefer reading books and watching TV. In general, hobbies make our life more interesting and pleasant.

Besides, hobbies help people to make friends because it is easy to find friends among people who share your interests.

MY FAMILY

I want to tell you about my family. It’s not very big. I have a mother, a father and a brother.

My mother’s name is Elena. She is 42. She is tall and slim with long blond hair and green eyes. She is a very nice, clever and helpful woman. She is a doctor, so she is very patient and kind. My mum likes reading books and magazines and she knows a lot of interesting things. She is always ready to help me with my homework if I have problems. She is my real friend.

My father’s name is Anatoly. He is 44. He is tall, well built with brown hair and dark eyes. He sometimes wears beard but my mum doesn’t like it. My dad is a good architect. He works 12 hours a day but he spends the weekends only with us. He is athletic and good at sports, so we usually go skiing and play football at weekends together. When the weather is nice, we go to the countryside to enjoy fresh air and beautiful landscapes.

My elder brother Dmitry is 21. He is a student. He studies at Moscow State University. He is going to be an economist. We don’t spend much time together but when we have a chance we usually go to the cinema, live concerts or just watch football matches on TV. He plays the guitar very well and sometimes we sing together.

I love my family very much. We are friendly and hospitable.

A PERSON I ADMIRE

The person that I admire the most is the first cosmonaut in the world Yuri Gagarin. He was born on the 9th of March, 1934 in the village near Smolensk. Yuri Alexeyevich is famous for his first flight into space.

Yuri was an active, brave and curious boy. His father was jack-of-all-trades (мастер на все руки) and he helped his son when Yuri made toy planes by hand. After finishing a school Yuri Gagarin entered a technical college in Saratov. In our city he joined an aero club and began to fly. In 1955 he entered (поступает) a school for pilots. When he became a pilot he joined (присоединился, вступил в ряды) the first group of cosmonauts.

In 1960 Gagarin began to prepare for the first flight into space. On April 12,1961 Yuri Gagarin flew into space and spent 108 minutes there. It was the first time in history that the Russian spaceship “Vostok” with the man on board ( на борту) was in space. After his flight Gagarin became a Hero of our country. He died in 1968, but people always remember the first Russian cosmonaut.

The reason I admire him is because he was very determined, daring and brave and he never gave up on life. When I think of him, I believe that everything is possible if you work hard to achieve it.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas in Great Britain and America is celebrated on the 25th of December. It is probably the most popular family holiday.

People prepare for this holiday very carefully. They put Christmas trees, decorate their houses with fairy lights and hang a wreath on their front door. 

Santa Claus or simply "Santa" brings presents to children at Christmas. Many children believe that Santa Claus arrives on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer. Santa Claus comes through a chimney and puts gifts for children into stockings.

Carol singing is an essential part of Christmas. Carol is a religious song. Usually children come to the front doors and start singing carols and people who live in these houses give children candies and nuts to thank them for carol singing.

In the Christmas afternoon all families have a big meal. People eat a turkey or a goose and vegetables for Christmas dinner. British people also have Christmas pudding and mince pies. After lunch, people watch the Queen’s Christmas speech on TV.

The New Year is not so important as Christmas in America and Britain. On New Year’s Eve, people clean their houses, buy presents for relatives and friends and cook tasty dishes. When bells chime 12, everyone kisses and wishes each other a Happy New Year. Then people have parties, dance, sing songs and exchange gifts with their relatives and friends. There is usually a great fireworks display at New Year’s night.

Russian people celebrate Christmas and the New Year, too. But we celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January. People in Russia buy a New Year tree, decorate it with colored balls and lights. Children have presents on New Year. At night Father Frost comes and puts presents for children under the tree. I normally I stay up late and watch TV programmes with my family and friends. At midnight we set off fireworks in the street. I like these holidays a lot because I feel happy to be with friends and family and look forward to a good year.

READING.BOOKS IN MY LIFE

I like reading very much and I can ‘t imagine our life without books. There are different genres of books: stories, novels, poetry, adventures, historical, science fiction, mystery and detective stories. Books teach us moral values and form our characters. Books help us look into the past or into the future, using our imagination.

When I was a child, my parents read fairy tales to me. I learnt a lot from them. I also liked adventure stories, novels about pirates and brave knights.

Now, when I have some free time, I usually spend it with a book. I like reading detective stories about Sherlock Holmes written by Arthur Conan Doyle, adventure books, like “Oliver Twist” by Charles Dickens, and fantasy. In my opinion, fantasy is very popular with teenagers nowadays. My favourite writer is J.Rowling . Everyone knows her main character Harry Potter. As for historical novels, I find them boring.

After reading an interesting book, I try to see a film, based on this book. It is very interesting to compare (сравнить) a book and a film.

My family has a large home library. But of course, we can’t collect all the books we need at home. So I have to borrow some books from libraries.

Books are our friends. They help us solve problems and answer any questions. And it’s only up to you to choose what book to read.

THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHEN IRELAND

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the official name of the country. It occupies the British Isles and consists of 4 main parts which are: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The capital of the country is London. Each part has its capital. The capital of England is London, Wales has Cardiff, Scotland has Edinburgh and the main city of Northern Ireland is Belfast.

England is the biggest part of the country. People who live there are the English. The symbol of England is a red rose. In Wales people speak English and Welsh. They are the Welsh. The symbol of Wales is a daffodil (нарцис). The symbol of Scotland is a thistle (чертополох). People who live in Scotland are the Scots. They wear kilts (национальная юбка) and play the bagpipes (волынка). The symbol of Northern Ireland is a shamrock (трилистник).

The weather in the UK is very changeable. A fine morning can change into a wet afternoon and evening and the wrong side out. People say: "Other countries have a climate; in England we have weather." The English also say that they have three variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when it rains all day long.

Great Britain is a beautiful country with old traditions, good people and different attractions. When we think of the UK we think of it’s Big Ben, A Policeman, The Tower of London, London Eye, A Black Taxi cab, Buckingham Palace, A Double Decker Bus, St Paul's Cathedral.

The United Kingdom is a monarchy and the Queen is the head of state. But in practice it is ruled by the elected government with a Prime Minister at the head.

Healthy Body – Healthy Spirit

Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth,” wise people say. If you have a headache, heartache, toothache or backache, if you have a sore throat or a bad cough, I think you should consult a doctor.

The polluted and unhealthy world makes people realize the importance of keeping fit and going in for sport. Sport is popular with the young and the old. Many people do morning exercises, go jogging and train at gyms. Others prefer just watching sports programmes on TV and listening to sport news.

Sport is a good way to keep fit. Keeping fit is important because a healthy person can work much easier and live a happy life.

Sport has become an important school subject in Russia. Schoolchildren have sport three times a week. Boys and girls play sports games, such as volleyball and basketball, do exercises, take part in competitions.

As for me, I do sport regularly. I usually play football with my friends and sometimes jog in the morning ( варианты ответов о себе).

My favourite sport is swimming and I go to the swimming pool twice a week.When I swim I relax and forget about problems for some time (рианты ответов о себе).

Keepeing fit also deals with the right way of eating. Keeping to a diet has become very popular today. People feel better because they avoid eating fatty and unhealthy food.

Keeping fit and going in for sport are very important and everyone should do something to stay healthy and feel happy.

Mass Media

Mass Media or the press, the radio and TV play an important role in the life of society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way we see the world and shape our views and opinion.

There are 3 basic types of M.M.: printed, electronic and broadcast.

Printed M.M. are newspapers, magazines, booklets and brochures.

Broadcast M.M. are Radio and TV.

Electronic M.M. are the Internet and mobile phones.

The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that's an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. I’m not keen on special programmes. I like to see a bit here and a bit there. Also, I can say I like programmes about travelling and traditions of another countries. Those programmes are educating and relaxing at the same time. (You may express your own opinion).

Still, many people prefer the radio. It's good to listen to you favourite music in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.

Newspapers usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information.

The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don't have to wait for news time on TV.

One more important thing which is worth mentioning is advertising. Mass Media is one of the best ways to promote various goods and to help people to understand what they really need.

I believe it would be hard to imagine our life without Mass Media. Mass media shapes public opinion.

MM have done a lot of good and still are helping people. I think MM are the symbol of our time and soon they are going to make our lives even better by improving and developing.

Gadgets

Every house today is full of small smart devices, such as smart phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, laptops, tablet PCs, games consoles, USBs and others.

All teenagers spend much time in front of screens of electronic gadgets. We can find a lot of useful information for studying in the Internet. I can do home work on line, it is very comfortable. Gadgets do not take much space, I save time. And when I’m sick I can ask my classmates about all home tasks.

A mobile phone is a number one gadget among teenagers. Some people can hardly imagine themselves without mobile phones.  If you leave it at home you feel quite helpless, don’t you? Every day I use my smart phone, mp3 and note book. They make my life easier and more comfortable. Mobile phone is an essential part of my life, my best friend. I guess it’s good to have a mobile phone: we become more sociable and we solve our problems at the touch of a button. My smart phone is always with me. I can call my friends , play different games when I’m on a trip and I’m bored , I keep all my needed telephone numbers there and I can use it anytime and everywhere.

I cannot imagine my life without music. I can relax and forget about the routine pastime. I turn on my mp3 and listen to my favourite singers. I really enjoy it.

The most important gadget is my note book. It helps me with my homework, as I can search for information on the net, I can relax after a hard day playing games or watching movies, I can chat with my friends , and I can find the latest news about the world.

It is interesting and joyful having these gadgets, as they can be both a source of information and a source of relaxing.

ECOLOGY

The planet, we live on, is beautiful. However, it has a lot of problems. The problem of ecology is very important today because we live in a polluted world. There is air, water and soil pollution.

Air pollution is caused by transport in big cities. Factory smoke is very harmful for people’s health and environment.

Water pollution is another dangerous kind of pollution. When acid rain falls into rivers and lakes, they become toxic. The water in the seas is dirty too, it kills and wipes out fish species.

Soil pollution is also very dangerous and it is bad for trees and plants. Fruit and vegetables become poisoned and it makes people sick when they eat them.

People should save the Earth by reducing air, water and soil pollution. People can save electricity by turning off lights, our TV-set and computer. We can use public transport, ride a bike, or walk. We can also plant trees, collect rubbish and recycle cans, bottles, plastic bags and newspapers. Besides, there are a lot of special organizations, which try to save our nature. The most known isGreenpeace, which saves plants, animals and people. If we want to be healthy, to drink clean water and to breathe fresh air, we should take care of the environment.

My Native Town. My Coolest Spot

There are many beautiful cities and towns in my country. Some of them are very old, others are modern and new: Moscow and St. Petersburg, Tula and Sochi. I want to tell you about my native city, Saratov. Its history dates back to 1590. It was founded as a fortress on the right bank of the Volga river. 

Nowadays Saratov is a big, industrial city but the central part of the city is a masterpiece of old classical architecture. There are many historical monuments and interesting places in Saratov, such as Theatre Square, Sobinov Conservatory, that is a symbol of our city, Troitsky Cathedral, City Park, Lipky Park and the Cosmonaut Embankment, which offers great views of the Volga.

Saratov is a cultural centre. There are many theatres, museums, institutes, libraries, cinemas and a very good Circus by brothers Nikitines. The Radischev Art Museum became the first public museum in Russia. There is a great collection of painting and sculptures there. There are 4 theatres in Saratov: the Drama Theatre, the Opera and Ballet House, the Theatre for young Spectators and the Puppet Theatre Teremok. Saratov is the “town of students”. Students from different towns and countries study here.

Saratov has lots of interesting attractions but my coolest spot is City Park. I love it there. There are plenty of activities to choose from, such as a ride on a carousel, a film at the IMAX theatre, a boat trip or roller-skating. City Park is also the best place to breathe fresh air and enjoy nature.

I am proud of my city and I love it. It is a place where I always want to return to.

There different lifestyles. Some people prefer living in the city – they are called “city mice”. Others like living in the country – they are called “country mice”. People, who like living in a big city, are fond of convenient public transport and crowded streets. Shops, cinemas and theatres are very important to them. As for me, I am a “city mouse”. I like visiting museums and concert halls. And I hate being isolated.

However, other people like peace and quiet and beautiful landscapes. They can’t stand heavy traffic and noisy crowded streets.

Though I am a “city mouse”, I like to spend a month at my Granny’s who lives in a small village on the Volga. I get up early in the morning, run to the river, swim or fish there. Together with my friend, I walk in the forest and breathe fresh air. At the end of my summer holidays, I am happy to come back to my hometown.
