England

The symbol of England is a red rose, and English people are crazy about gardening. Everywhere in England you will see gardens, large and small. The English are also famous for their love of animals. A lot of families have pets, especially cats and dogs.

English football is famous of course, but there is another national sport too - cricket. Many English people love cricket, but it is not so popular in Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Some cricket matches continue for five days, and often there isn’t even a winner!

In the south of England you will find some beautiful villages. Some of the houses and cottages have thatched roofs. «Thatcher» is an English surname.

Many English surnames are the names of jobs, for example, Baker, Farmer, Potter.

The two oldest and most famous universities in England are in Oxford and Cambridge. If you visit these cities, you will see amazing old buildings, beautiful gardens, rivers - and punts. Punts are long boats. You have to stand up at one end of the punt, put a pole in the water and push. It’s very difficult!

Some of the wildest and most beautiful countryside in England is in the north. It is very popular with Walkers, campers and climbers. If you go to the northeast, near Newcastle, you will be able to see Hadrian’s Wall. Roman soldiers built it two thousand years ago. You can still walk along parts of it - just like the Roman soldiers did.

Listen to James talking about his favourite place in England. Then answer the questions.

Where is Tintagel?

Why is it famous?

What can you see there?

Where might you see ghosts?

What might you see every year?

Приложение 2

Cornwall is full of mystery and magic. There are lots of fascinating places. My favourite place in Cornwall is Tintagel. It’s famous because legends say that King Arthur was born there, in the castle - the old castle walls are still there. There are lots of old stories about King Arthur, his beautiful wife Guinevere, Merlin the magician and the Knights of the Round Table. Some people say that their ghosts still walk around in the caves near the castle walls. The legends say that every year you can see the castle just like it was in Arthur’s time. I’d love to see that!

Stonehenge is a group of very large tall stones which are arranged into a large circle with a smaller circle inside it. It was built in prehistoric times and is located near Salisbury, England. The original number of stones was about 60 but some of them were removed or broken up. Some stones are 9 m long and weight 50 tons.

The reasons for the building of Stonehenge are unknown, but scientists believe that it was the place of worship and ritual. The first stones were put there more than 4000 years ago and could be used for studying the movements of the Sun, the Moon and the stars. Many people think that they were used by ancient priests in religious ceremonies. What is surprising about Stonehenge is the fact that some stones were brought from as far as 385 km away,

Stonehenge is a very popular place for tourists to visit and since 1980s it has become especially popular in summer, when on the 21st June people come to celebrate there the summer solstice, the day when the Sun is Furthest north.

Stratford-upon-Avon is the birthplace of William Shakespeare,

It is located on the river Avon in central England. The town was built in the 13th century. For hundreds of years it was only known as a country market town, but later it became a tourist centre because of its association with William Shakespeare, who was born and died there; his grave is in the church of Holy Trinity.

The Shakespeare Centre in Stratford includes a library and art gallery (opened 1881) and a theatre (opened 1932). Every year from March until October, Shakespeare’s plays are performed in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Interesting places to visit also include the house of Anna Hathaway, who was Shakespeare’s wife. Many of the original houses from his time are still in excellent condition. They are preserved by Shakespeare’s organization.

Hadrian’s wall is a stone wall which the Roman Emperor Hadrian ordered to build across the North of England in 122 AD, The Emperor was also known for his architectural abilities. The wall was 80 miles long and stretched from the east coast to the west in order to protect Roman Britain from the attacks of the Scottish tribes. Building the wall he wanted to avoid wars.

The wall was about 6 metres thick and 4.5 metres high. The towers and gates were built into the wall every one Roman mile. Ditches on both sides protected the wall. Today the wall is a popular tourist attraction.

Lake district is situated in northwestern England. It is the country’s largest National Park; it occupies an area of 866 sq miles (2,243 sq km). It contains numerous lakes, including Windermere (England’s largest), Grasmere, and Coniston Water. Only five peaks in England are over 900 metres high and they all are in Lake District. England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike, rises to 3,210 ft (978 rn). So, the tourists have the chance to explore the best walking and climbing routes that England can оffer.

The district was home to several English poets and writers, including William Wordsworth, Robert Southey, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who celebrated its landscape, William Wordsworth’s house is still there. It is 400 years old. Now it is the museum.

Oxford and Cambridge are world famous thanks to their oldest and most respected universities. These towns are called the towns of students because about 25 000 students from different countries live and study there.

Oxford is situated on the River Thames. It was first mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle of AD 912. Oxford University was built in the 13th century. It is made up of 35 colleges.

Cambridge is located in eastern England. Cambridge lies on the River Cam. The town was founded in the 11th -12th centuries and is popular with tourists thanks to its beautiful architecture. The University of Cambridge, which was built in the 13th century, is famous for its educational excellence. It consists of 30 colleges.

Oxford and Cambridge are the places of young people and old traditions, for example, teachers are called Dons and still wear long black gowns. If you visit these towns you will see people sailing in punts, long boats with flat bottom. People stand at one end of the punt, put a pole in the water and push. There are lots of beautiful old buildings in Oxford and Cambridge, their fine architecture also attracts tourists.
