A robot is a machine that does work for people. The word ‘robot’ appeared in the 1920s and it was first used in a science fiction story. In real life, the robot was invented later, in 1954. There are different kinds of robots which are used in different industries. Most of them are operated with the help of a computer program. Instead of humans, robots do hard and boring work in unpleasant or dangerous environments. They usually work faster and more accurately than people. They never get tired and do not make mistakes. Nowadays robots are often used for domestic needs – to clean houses or to look after sick and elderly people. Scientists say that soon robots will become a normal part of our life, like mobiles and computers today.

1. Which part of island of Great Britain is occupied by Scotland?
2. Which plant is the floral symbol of Scotland?
3. What games are accompanied by traditional bagpipe music?
4. Which country is often see as a magical one?
5. What are the benefits of using heather in household?
6. Why is it said that Scotland can be an excellent destination for open-air activities?
7. What are the impressive facts about Scotish Daily life?
A. Thanks to television and films, Scotland is often seen by the rest of the world as a magical country, a land of misty mountains and the home of a lake creature called Nessie. This is the image most people have in mind. The truth, however, is completely different from the way the world thinks of Scotland. You may be surprised to find out that most Scots live in the lowlands and don’t believe in Nessie.
B. Scottish heather, a small bush with flowers, is the floral symbol of the country. The colour of the flowers usually varies from purple to lilac, but they can also be white. In the past, the Scots believed that they would never be captured by enemies and would win victories if they wore white heather. Today, when getting married, girls add white heather to bouquets to bring fortune to their family.
C. Heather has grown in Scotland as far back as its history goes. This has turned it into a kind of household good. Heather honey is rich in minerals, and was traditionally used in medicinal drinks. Thousands of years ago, dried heather was used to make perfumes, and the tough stems were used to make ropes. On many of the northern Scottish islands, heather played a major role in the construction of houses.
D. Scotland is an excellent destination for open-air activities all year round. Its lakes and coastline are ideal for boating and rowing and have some of the best sea-kayaking in the world. The rivers are perfect for fishing and the mountains are wonderful for hill climbing and skiing. Scotland is also good for walkers. You can enjoy easy family walks or more difficult mountain hikes.
E. The Highland Games in Scotland date from long before Scotland’s written history. The various athletics allowed men to demonstrate their physical power and the skills needed for battle and survival. The Games today still include the athletic competitions in their original form together with dancing contests. All the competitors wear kilts. Traditional bagpipe music accompanies all the events.
F. Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom, occupying the northern third of the island of Great Britain. Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's financial centres. The population of the country is a little over 5 million people. The currency is the pound sterling although the Bank of Scotland issues its own notes and coins.

Supermarkets
It is believed that the idea of supermarkets first belonged to an American businessman who opened a self-service grocery store in 1916. The main advantage of the new American store was that the goods were stocked on the shelves, so the customers could take their own goods and bring them to the front of the store to pay for them. Although there was a high risk of stealing, the owner found the new shop's organisation more effective because it allowed him to reduce the number of shop assistants. Later the new shop organisation spread widely throughout European countries.
Nowadays supermarkets are as British as football and cricket. In the UK 90% of all food is bought at five different supermarket chains. That makes these companies extremely powerful, especially when they deal with small businesses, for example farmers. Milk is a good example. Supermarkets like to use things such as milk and bread, which are at the top of almost everyone's shopping list, to attract customers. To offer the lowest price the supermarkets need to buy milk from dairy farmers very cheaply, so big supermarket chains agree on a very low price and dictate it to farmers. If the farmers don't agree to that price, supermarkets start to look for the cheapest possible products abroad instead.
The consumers are of course happy to get cheaper products, but they should also keep in mind the influence supermarkets have on the environment. First of all there's packaging. Supermarkets like all the products to be packed because it makes it easier to put them neatly on the shelves. Consequently, supermarkets produce nearly 10 million tons of waste packaging in the UK every year, less than 5% of which is recycled. Some supermarkets put large recycling bins in their car parks, trying to create the image that they are environmentally friendly. However, that is just an image.
To reach the supermarket shelves the products often have to travel half the globe. Due to preservatives even milk products can stay unspoiled for months. It's a great advantage for the supermarket as yoghurt bought from a farmer can't be kept for longer than 2 days. That is why many small farmers do not even get a chance to compete with long-lasting imported goods.
When a new supermarket is planned, everyone says that a lot of new jobs will be created. In reality the number of jobs lost in the area is greater than the number of new positions in the supermarket. Within a 15km radius of every new supermarket that opens the number of people working in the food business goes down. It happens because all the small shops nearby are forced to close.

This text deals with …
1. Dangerous shoes.
2. Following the rules.
3. Angry shoppers.
4. New fashion.
5. Dress rules.
6. Wear in special areas.
A. A new kind of training shoes, with wheels in the heel, are in fashion in Wales. Many teenagers asked for them at Christmas. But the manager of the St Andrew`s Shopping Centre in Liverpool says the shoes, called ‘Heelies’, are dangerous. He says kids in ‘Heelies’ can’t enter the mall. They must take them off and walk around in their socks.
B. The manager, Gilmour Johnes, thinks there is a safety problem. Teenagers with these shoes could break a shop window or knock down an older customer. Mr. Johnes says that the rule against wheels is not new. ‘For many years we have had the rules against using rollerblades or skateboards in the centre.’
C. Many other malls also have specific dress rules for teenagers. In the USA, some malls have rules about wearing baseball caps. You mustn’t wear your cap to the side — the cap must be straight, and you mustn’t wear it low over your face. The security camera must be able to see your face.
D. Many of these rules are to stop big groups of teenagers getting in the way of shoppers. Groups of kids sometimes stand on the stairs or in the doors and customers can’t pass. Some shoppers are afraid of large groups of noisy teenagers. One mall manager said, ‘We are here to sell. If you don’t want to buy, we don’t want you here.’
E. However, the problem with ‘Heely’ shoes is not just the feelings of other shoppers. There is a real safety problem — these shoes can be dangerous. The company that makes them tells users not to wear them in crowded places.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales. It is located in a national park. It stands at 1085 metres above sea level, and it is often described as the busiest mountain in Great Britain. Snowdon is very popular with tourists. If you are strong and brave enough to get to the top, you can enjoy wonderful views from there. On a clear day, you can see as far as Ireland! During the summer months there is a café at the top. There, tourists can get a welcome cup of tea, or soup if the weather is cold. If you feel too tired to walk back, you can always take the train down the mountain. The mountain railway was built in 1896. It is safe, and there have never been any accidents on this route.

1. What is the main fact about the material of jeans?
2. What thing is one of fashion`s most long enduring trends?
3. Who had the idea of using fasteners for jeans pockets?
4. When did jeans become a symbol of oppositions for young artists and writers?
5. What is the most recognizable article of American clothing?
6. Are jeans easy to care for?
7. Who made jeans popular?
A. Jeans are one of fashion's most long enduring trends. Cowboys wear them but so do supermodels, farmers, presidents and housewives. Ask any group of people why they wear jeans and you will get a range of answers. For some they're comfortable and easy — for others they're trendy and cool. Jeans mean different things to different people but they are popular everywhere.
B. Americans do not have a national folk dress with a long tradition. Blue jeans are probably the most recognisable article of American clothing. They have been part of American life for over 125 years. Blue denim jeans became not only an expression of American fashion but also an element of American identity known around the world.
C. Jeans were first designed as trousers for farmers and miners in the states of the American West. They quickly grew popular with common people, including cowboys, factory employees and railroad builders. The new trousers were made from a very strong material which did not wear out easily. However, at the same time jeans were very practical and comfortable to wear.
D. Pockets were the weak point of the miners' clothes — they easily tore away from the jeans. A man called Jacob Davis had the idea of using metal rivets (fasteners) to hold the pockets and the jeans together so that they wouldn't tear. Davis wanted to patent his idea, but he didn't have enough money, so he offered Levi Strauss a deal if Strauss paid for the patent. Strauss accepted and started making jeans.
E. Jeans are good because they don't show the dirt. You can easily go a month without washing them and they don't look shocking. They don't need to be washed as often as other trousers and you don't need to iron them. What's more, because of the strong material you can wear your favorite jeans for years. Even the occasional hole or spot doesn’t spoil them at all.
F. In the 30s and 40s many people began to spend their spare time watching movies where adventurous cowboys rode horses, fought bad guys and wore blue jeans. The actors made jeans popular in movies and everyone wanted to wear them. Young people wished to imitate the casual “cowboyish” look they saw in films, and they began to wear jeans as casual wear.

Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of Charles Dodgson, an English writer and author of two of the best loved children's books in English Literature – “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass”. The characters and phrases from these books have entered and become part of the English culture so if someone calls you “Mad as a Hatter”, you know whom to thank.
Charles Dodgson was talented in many ways. Apart from being a creative writer, he was also a Mathematics Don (professor) at Oxford and a well-known logician. He was interested in photography and music. He sang very well, played chess and enjoyed creating and solving puzzles.
Charles Dodgson was born on 27 January 1832 and spent the first eleven years of his life at Warrington, Cheshire where his father was the priest. His family was large; his parents had 11 children, 4 boys and 7 girls.
Charles was educated first by home-schooling, then at two boarding schools, and finally at Christ Church College, Oxford. Later in life, he remembered his boarding school experience without any warm feelings. Still, he was an excellent student and studied very well in all his subjects.
In 1854 Charles Dodgson got a 1st class degree in Mathematics and one year later he became a lecturer in Mathematics at Christ Church College. It was then that he started his literary career and took his pen-name, Lewis Carroll. While his creative books and poetry were published under his pen-name, he also wrote books on Mathematics under his own name.
When a new Headmaster arrived at Christ Church College, he brought with him his family. Dodgson became the family’s close friend. The Headmaster’s little daughters, the youngest of which was called Alice, enjoyed his company very much. Charles often entertained the girls by telling them stories about imaginary worlds with fantastic creatures.
The story about the adventures of little Alice became popular all over the world. “Alice in Wonderland” is primarily a children’s story, but adults have enjoyed the novel for over a century together with children.
Many elements of “Alice” were not completely new. Talking animals, for instance, or the story idea in which a child or children are carried away from reality into a fantasy world. However, it was Carroll who established a new motif that would be used again and again in children’s literature: Peter Pan, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Narnia books, and the Harry Potter books. That is the possibility for the main characters to travel back and forth between the real world and wonderland.
Though his characters travelled a lot between one world and another, Charles Dodgson himself didn’t like being away from home. The only occasion on which (as far as it is known) he went abroad was a trip to Russia in 1867.
He died of pneumonia on 14 January 1898 at his sisters' home. He was 2 weeks away from turning 66.

1. The never-sleeping country.
2. The city having two parts.
3. The golden city.
4. The sunshine state.
5. The cheap and free city.
6. A land of song.
A. Some visitors say that London is a very expensive city, but there are a few things to do which do not cost a lot of money. Most museums are free and give guided tours as well as lectures. The National Theatre next to the Royal Festival Hall also has free concerts in the foyer every evening and on Saturday lunchtimes. Some cinemas are cheaper on Mondays; others sell half-price tickets before 6 pm.
B. Florida was bought from the Spanish in 1819. It is the southernmost state on the mainland and has a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean. Oranges grow all year round even in winter, when the weather is very cold further north. The warm climate has made Florida an important vacation resort. More than ten million visitors come to Miami Beach every year. There are also many theme parks and other entertainment.
C. Spain is famous for its unusual lifestyle. For example, Spanish people usually have lunch at 2.30 pm and dinner at 10.00 pm. People don’t usually go to bed before midnight. At 10.00 on Friday and Saturday nights the bars and restaurants are full. Spanish night-life really starts at mid night. A lot of disco-bars don’t close before 6.00 in the morning. On the east coast of Spain some discos open at 10.00 on Sunday mornings!
D. The Welsh have been famous for their singing for centuries. If you go to any Welsh rugby match, you will hear supporters singing in harmony. Male-voices choirs are found throughout Wales and many Welsh people have become famous opera singers. The reputation of Wales as a centre for music attracts musicians from all over the world to its various festivals.
E. Budapest has a population of over two million people. The River Danube divides the city into two parts. On the west bank there are the woods and hills of Buda and the old town. On the east ban k there is the bigger and more modem Pest, the business and shopping centre. From Buda there are wonderful views of Pest and the river. Six bridges join Buda and Pest. For nearly a thousand years Buda and Pest w ere two towns. Then in 1873 they joined and became one city, Budapest.

Задание 1.Расшифровказаписи
I’ve lived in a foreign country: in Japan, actually. I lived in Osaka for a year. I enjoyed it very much. I loved the food. I have worked for a big company. I worked for Nissan, the car company, that’s why I was in Japan. That was two years ago, then I got another job.
Have I stayed in an expensive hotel? No, never — only cheap hotels for me, but I have flown in a jumbo jet — four or five times, actually. I’ve never cooked a meal for a lot of people. I love food but I don’t like cooking. Sometimes I cook for me and my girlfriend but she likes it better if we go out for a meal!
I’ve never met a famous person — oh, just a minute, well not, met! I saw a famous politician at the airport once. Oh, who was it? I can’t remember his name. I’ve only seen one Shakespeare play. When I was at school, we saw “Romeo and Juliet”. It was OK-I’ve driven a tractor. I had a holiday job on a farm when I was 17. I enjoyed that.
Good news — I’ve never been to hospital. I was born in hospital, of course, but that’s different. Bad news — I’ve never won a competition. I do the lottery every week but I’ve never won a thing!
Пояснение.
A. I lived in Osaka for a year.
B. I worked for Nissan, the car company, that’s why I was in Japan.
C. Sometimes I cook for me and my girlfriend but she likes it better if we go out for a meal!
D. I’ve driven a tractor. I had a holiday job on a farm when I was 17.
E. I was born in hospital, of course, but that’s different.

Jim: Hi, Nora! You look great!
Nora: Hi, Jim. It's probably because it's my birthday today. I'm turning sixteen.
Jim: Oh, many happy returns! Are you having a party today?
Nora: No. We'll have a party some time later. My exam session started two days ago so I'm very busy now, no time for partying.
Jim: I see. Have you already passed any of your exams?
Nora: Yes. Mathematics. And three more are left. They'll keep me busy till the middle of June.
Jim: Poor you! But Maths is the most difficult one, right?
Nora: Yes. I'm so happy that I passed it and my grade was surprisingly good.
Jim: Congratulations! Are you going to study Maths at university? I mean when you go to university?
Nora: I don't know. I hope not. I want to become a journalist. Journalists don't need Mathematics, do they?
Jim: Well, I think that if you want to work as a journalist, you should be well-educated in all fields. That is, apart from having excellent communication skills.
Nora: Right. Anyway, I still have two more years at school to learn everything I need to before I go to university.
Jim: And how about short-term plans? What are you doing this summer — working, travelling or both?
Nora: I don't know yet. We may go to my grandmother's. She lives in Italy.
Jim: Italy sounds great!
Nora: I love it too! But my mother insists on our going to Paris as she wants me to practice my French. I don't think it's necessary — I have no problem speaking French. I'm actually top of the class in French and Spanish.
Jim: Don't you like Paris?
Nora: I definitely prefer the Italian countryside to the city of Paris.
Jim: I understand. And in Italy you can practice Italian, can't you?
Nora: I don't speak Italian though I go to my grandma almost every summer.
Jim: Why?
Nora: All my friends there learn English and want me to speak English to them, so they can practice.
Jim: Very clever of them!

Задание 1.Расшифровказаписи
Speaker A. My friend Lucy is a nice person but there are things about her that drive me mad. One of them is her way of buying clothes. She actually doesn’t buy things she tries them on. Even if the color of the dress doesn’t zoo her at all, when jeans are 3 sizes bigger than her’s, she will try them on anyway! Shopping with her takes so much time and afforts.
Speaker B. I don’t think that teenagers should wear something expensive but the clothes should be in line with their personalities. There are lots of similar looking things in the shops but if I want something really original I make it myself. I enjoy making all kinds of accessories like bags, belts, hand-made jewelry and decorations. I use different materials for this like leather, fabrics and other things.
Speaker C. I have dark brown hear and dark eyes. But my mum keeps me buying clothes in beige, brown and dark blue. She says it’s elegance and practical, but I definitely prefer something in liker. Or ultra yellow. Green is so bright, but it still looks natural. Yellow and orange remind me of the sun and uplift my mood. They are bright enough even in gloomy winter day.
Speaker D. Young people usually prefer active lifestyle. And this means that their closes should be comfortable, practicable and fashionable too. The best clothes for teens have been usually jeans, t-shirts and jumpers. They can be in different colors from dark ones to bright ones, different in style either plane or with prints and accessories but they are always trendy and fit for any occasion.
Speaker E. I normally don’t like shopping for closes as it takes so much time and I simply don’t find it interesting, but when I go to see my friend I always drop in to a shop on the corner near her house. You can find all kinds of hand-made clothes and accessories there. I bought a scarf and a pair of gloves there for myself. And I also buy all kind of presents there for my friends.
Задание 2. Расшифровказаписи
Kelly: Hi, Jim! I didn’t see you in the morning class. Did you come late?
Jim: Hi, Kelly. Yes, I was late. Ms. Smith talked to me really seriously about that. I said that the bus had broken down.
Kelly: And she believed that?
Jim: I don’t think so.
Kelly: And the real reason was…?
Jim: The usual. I overslept. I didn’t hear the alarm clock and woke up only when my mum called me from her work.
Kelly: I’m not surprised. Were you watching films yesterday till very late again?
Jim: Yes. I was just going to see what was on but then I lost track of time and watched the film up to the end.
Kelly: I tried to call you yesterday. Just wanted to remind you about the Science project we need to complete together by tomorrow. It’s about how computers influence our life and our communication habits.
Jim: Oh, I’d forgotten about that! How about today, after classes? Let’s go to my place and we’ll complete the project in two or three hours I’m sure.
Kelly: I usually prefer working in the library or in a Wi-Fi café. But you’re right – there’s no time left for it. Do you have good internet access and a printer?
Jim: I certainly do. And I also have a freshly made cake in the fridge.
Kelly: It’s a strong argument. Have you remembered that for the project we have to interview at least three people of different ages about what they do online?
Jim: That’s not a problem. We can ask my mother, my grandmother and my younger brother, who’s seven.
Kelly: Right. Your brother’s answers will be especially interesting. Children spend more time online than anyone else.
Jim: True. He’s there more often than me.
Kelly: And have you got any books or journals at home from which we could get some additional information?
Jim: No. And we don’t need to. We are writing about the Internet – we’ll certainly be able to find everything we need right there – on the Internet.
Kelly: Ok, let’s give it a try. We have no choice anyway.
Jim: And, Kelly, I’d like to ask you a favour…
Kelly: What is it?
Jim: Could you read my French essay before I hand it in? I always make lots of spelling and grammar mistakes in writing.
Kelly: What’s your topic?
Jim: The aim of education in the present day.
Kelly: Ok, give it to me. I’ve only got a few minutes before the bell.

Electronic assistant: How old are you?
Student: I had a birthday yesterday so now I'm sixteen years old.
Electronic assistant: How many times a week do you do sports?
Student: I go to the gym twice a week because I believe that it's very important to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Electronic assistant: What sport is the most popular with teenagers in your region?
Student: Well, in general I would say that children in my region prefer to play football because every school has its own playing field.
Electronic assistant: What sports facilities are available in the place where you live?
Student: Speaking about sports facilities I’d say that there is a wide choice of them in the place where I live. We have football pitches, ice hockey rinks, swimming pools, gyms and many others.
Electronic assistant: Why do you think it is important to keep fit?
Student: Firstly, it improves your health. Secondly, you become physically stronger and more attractive.
Electronic assistant: What would you advise a person who wants to keep fit?
Student: I’d say to him that he should always think about benefits which he will obtain in the process of keeping fit.
Electronic assistant: This is the end of the survey. Thank you very much for your cooperation.
