Means of achieving suspense in the fiction genre of thriller on the example of the story “The Langoliers” by Stephen King

The conducted research deals with the following statements:
- A text should be considered as a semantic whole and is structurally organized. As the object of the linguistic analysis, a text can be studied for understanding the lexical and stylistic meaning.
- The genre of thriller is original in its emotional and psychological influence that’s why it needs suspense to claim the reader’s attention and to create the horror.
- Suspense is a crucial characteristic of the thriller genre because it gives the viewer a feeling of pleasurable fascination and excitement mixed with apprehension, uncertainty, anticipation, tension, and anxiety. Suspense is a very important for thriller because it makes a reader guess about some kind of a danger, uses imagination of a reader and also has a psychological impact.
- Suspense is created by the stylistic figures, stylistic graphical means and lexical vocabulary which make the genre of thriller vivid and fulfil the aim of suspense (to denote fear and hope).
Thus, we have fulfilled the goal of our research. We identified the basic means of achieving suspense in the fiction genre of thriller on the example of S. Kings story “The Langoliers. We hadn’t an opportunity to research the genre of thriller completely because the volume of our research work didn’t follow this goal. However, we studied the suspense on the example of the S. King’s work as one of the most important and significant piece of fiction in the genre. This research work can be used in the further study of the problem of suspense.
