Suggested answer:

Pupil 1: May be, «Problems in a neighbourhood».

Pupil 2: As far as I understand, «Problems with accomodanion».

Pupil 3: I think, «Our towns and cities».

Pupil 4: I believe, «Problems of big cities».

Teacher:Yes, you are right.

3).Listening.

Teacher: Listen to three people, talking about some things. Guess, what they find annoying. What is each peason,s problem?

Tapescript:

Bob:It makes my blood boil when people throw rubbish in the streets. In my area it is so messy. Sometimes it seems as if there is rubbish everywhere: on the pavements, in the gutters, even in people`s gardens. I mean, why can`t people just put their rubbish in a bin- there are plenty around! It`s a diagrace!

Helen: It really gets on my nerves that public transport is so crowded in my city. It`s impossible to drive into the city now, because there is nowhere to park, so basically everyone goes to work or school by bus. I guess that`s good for the environment, but there should be more buses at peak times or they should build an underground train system or something like that. It`s just so horrible, standing up all the way to school and sometimes I can`t even get into the bus in the first place. I just can`t put up with it anymore.

Peter: «It really annoys me that there are so many stray dogs in the streets in my town. Apart from the fact that I feel very sorry for the poor animals that are left out in the streets, it`s a public health problem. Just the other week a child was bitten by a stray dog! I mean, surely it`s not difficult for the council to have the animals, picked up by an animal protection agency. It`s a disgrace!

b). Teacher: Tell me, please, which of the phrases in the table did they use to express their annoyance?

Suggested answer:

It makes my blood boil.

It`s a disgrace.

It really gets on my nerves.

I just can`t put up with it anymore.

Suggested answer:

1). Bob is concerned about the amount of rubbish everywhere.

2). It makes his blood boil when people throw rubbish oh the streets.

3). He is worried about the rubbish everywhere: on the pavements, in the gutters, even in people`s gardens.

4). He can`t understand that fact that people don`t throw rubbish in the bins. He thinks it`s a disgrace.

Pupil 6: From my point of view, it is unemployment. It makes my blood boil.

Pupil 7: To my mind, it is crime sometimes. It`s awful.

6).Reading.

Teacher: To my mind, there is a severe shortage of modern comfortable housing not only in our town/ but also in the whole world. You have read the text about shanty towns. Listen and read the text again and answer the questions.

1).What exactly is shanty town?

Suggested answer:

-A shanty town is an overcrowded community of huts with poor qualities. These huts have not clean water and electricity. They are situated on the outskirts of cities, on worthless land. Besides, these huts are illegal. Governments don`t pay attention to them. People living there have no medical care, education etc.

2). Why do they (shanty towns) develop?

Suggested answer:

Every day about 180,000 people move from the countryside into cities because they want a better life. Or, maybe, because of conflicts. But many people end up living in filthy conditions.

3). What is life like in a shanty town?

Suggested answer:

Unemployment and poverty levels are high in shanty towns. Malnutrition and child labour are common. There is lack of clean water and sanitation facilities. Deseases spread very quickly here. The high level of poverty often leads to organized crime and violence. However, these communities are full of life and enthusiasm.

4). Is anything being done?

Suggested answer:

International agencies are working with governments of poor countries to improve the situation. For example, charities sometimes offer residents loans to start business and earn decency living. In Brazil, for example, authorities make shanty towns legal.

7).RelaxationMolecule”(обучающиеся с помощью этого упражнения делятся на две команды).

Teacher: Imagine you live in a shanty. Prepare proposal for the city council to improve conditions in a shanty town. Think about: housing, sanitation, services.

Записьнадоскевпомощь: - It would be a good idea…

Suggested answer:

-I would recommend to make living conditions safer and more pleasant to live.

- It would be a good idea for the government to give a large sum of money to improve this area.

-Besides, they need to tidy their small houses. It will be the first step.

-I would recommend to enlarge greenery in this area.

-I would suggest to remove graffiti from the walls.

- I strongly advice to enlarge litter bins.

-I think it is necessary to take a loan in the bank.

- I guess it is obligatory to provide medical care.

Team 2:

- I would suggest to improve sanitary conditions and make place more pleasant to live.

-As high level of poverty leads to organize crime and violence. I would recommend the government to enlarge sums of money to improve the situation.

-Besides, it is necessary to improve sanitary conditions in this area and to hold clean up day.
