(P1): I usually get up at 7 o’clock. I walk to school, I never take a bus or a tram. I have 5 or 6 lessons a day. I teach 10-year-old students. In the lessons we speak English, ask and answer questions, read and translate, play games and write tests. I give only good marks. My pupils don’t prompt at the lessons. When I get home I’m always tired.

I cook dinner for my family. I don’t go for a walk in the evening. I watch TV and go to bed at about 11 o’clock. I always sleep well.

Martin: I’m really optimistic about the future. Just think about the future progress in different areas. Medicine and electronic technology, space discoveries, for example. One day, I’m sure, there will be cures for AIDS and cancer.

Isabel: I’m afraid of the future. Everything is changing so quickly. Bombs, pollution, dangerous technologies

New serious diseases…and who is responsible for it all? Just think of Chernobyl. They say that 20000 people will suffer in the next 20-30years because of this accident. I think the next century could be a really dangerous time.

Henry: In 10 years? I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s going to be the age of communication. Computer science has developed so fast. Scientists and computers are going to control everything. Let’s wait and see.

Phil: I don’t care about the future. What ‘s the point of thinking about it? I’m young. I just want to go out with my friends, play football and have a good time. I can’t change much in this world until I grow up.

To communicate with each other we use computers. But there are some other means of communication for instance foreign languages. Is it important to know one or more foreign languages?

Charles Dickens: life and creative activities.

Charles Dickens books are enjoyed both by educated people and people of low levels. There’s no other novelist in England who has such a hold over all social classes. His heroes are more real to us than the characters of some contemporary writers. He is a great man and great author and that’s why lots of people enjoy his novels.

Charles Dickens is one of those who have a wide circle of readers because his novels are realistic and true to life. They are closely connected with the events occurred in England in the nineteenth century.

Dickens early works were written in the period when first workhouses were founded. Life of the poor and neglected people in such houses is described in his novel «Oliver Twist Adventures». His best novels were a success because he knew contemporary reality very well and due to his great talent he made his heroes true to life.

But he didn’t appreciate revolution and considered capitalist relations inevitable. In his novel «David Copperfield» he depicts contradictions between rich and poor people and shows sufferings of the poor ones. A real tragedy is also shown in his novel «Hard Times».

In this novel as well as in «The story of two towns» Dickens gives bright depiction of events in London and Paris. We see the struggle of human feelings from love to hatred. The world of his characters is also amazing in such novels as «Little Dorrit» and «Great Expectations ».

The English still enjoy his books; more than that he is known far outside his country. His works are translated into many languages. One of the main ideas of his books is to show contrast between the poor and the rich. Russian people admire Dickens as well. This great novelist remains in people’s memory as the brightest author of the last three centuries.

Dickens came to English literature in the middle of the thirties. It was the beginning of great changes in industry and social life in England. His first stories were published when he was 22. He spent his early childhood in the poorest part of West England.

At the age of seven he was sent to elementary school but didn’t finish his education because his family was poor and he had to earn his living. First he worked as a clerk, then as a reporter. But he was very modest. He possessed a rare gift to mark and show specific situations and features of character. He feels sympathy with human sufferings and needs.

We are very thankful to this outstanding writer for his unforgettable and magnificent books.
