II. READING
For question 1-6, choose which of the sentences A-G fit into the gaps in the following magazine article. There is one extra paragraph which doesn’t fit in any of the gaps. Mark your answers on a separate answer sheet.
THE MAN WITH NO PAST
If you met John Forbes at a party, you would probably think he was a shy but good-natured 21-year-old. If you started talking about one of his favourite subjects – politics, science fiction or computer games – you would find him likeable and amusing. ( 1 ) … For a start, he wouldn’t recognize you and he certainly wouldn’t remember your name or the conversation from the previous night.
John isn’t rude or arrogant; he just cannot remember. His problem is that he suffers from a rare brain disorder that stops him remembering everyday events. ( 2 ).
In John’s world there is no past or future. He has difficulty remembering a telephone conversation from a moment earlier. He needs constant reminders about appointments and meal times. He cannot find his way around town and rarely goes to places he doesn’t know. If he does, he takes a map, detailed notes of the route and the reason for the journey.
( 3 ) …He was successful at school and can remember history dates and even complete passages from his favourite films. He knows the names of the important members of the government but then cannot remember that his sister, Kate, left college a year ago.
John would like to lead a normal life, which means getting a job and learning to drive for example. (4 )… Not because he couldn’t learn the road signs, but because he might see a warning sign, forget it, and fail to take the necessary action.
As for work, his parents used to be very keen for him to get a job. They even allowed him to sign up with employment agencies without mentioning his memory problems. They would not allow it now. ( 5 ) … “If you don’t remember being told to keep your hand away from a piece of machinery, you might get it chopped off,” says his father, Mike.
John spends a lot of his time at home, playing computer games and watching TV news reports at regular intervals so he can remember the information. ( 6 ) … As he says, ”Memory is a major factor in what makes you and gives you beliefs. I live for a moment – I don’t think about tomorrow.”
A On the other hand, his factual memory is good.
B This is because on one occasion he got a job on a building site and another in a glass factory, which could have had serious consequences.
C If you bumped into him again the following night, however, you might change your opinion.
D When you ask John how he feels about his life, he has quite a down-to-earth attitude.
E However, this is another big problem.
F He thinks memory isn’t the main thing in his case.
G “ How can I ask someone how their holiday was if I don’t remember they had one?” he asks.

WEATHER MYTHS
There are many myths and superstitions connected with the weather. In the past ( 1 ) … to think that storm clouds were the transport of the gods and the gods showed (2 ) … anger in thunder and lightning. Elements of nature and the weather such as ( 3 ) … the sun or winds were thought to be gods and ( 4 ) … given names. People prayed to these gods to give ( 5 ) … the weather they needed for farming or for safe journeys.
Even today many people ( 6 ) … pay some attention to the myths concerning the weather. Fishing-boats ( 7 ) … instance, are often still painted with an eye to watch for the sea gods and to warn ( 8 ) … likely storms. If they are outside in an electric storm many people try to find a stinging nettle ( 9 ) … of the ancient belief that a nettle gives you protection ( 10 )… lightning.
Farmers and fishermen are always particularly anxious to know what the weather will be (11)… . They have found many signs in nature which, they believe, predict ( 12 ) …the weather is going to do next. It is, thus, said that cows lie down before it rains and that ( 13 ) … swallows fly high the weather is going to be good. There does not, ( 14 ) …, seem to be any scientific basis for the idea that animals and birds can predict the weather ( 15 ) … such ways.
Nor is it ( 16 ) to make realistic long-term predictions about the weather by observing ( 17 ) … aspect of nature though people in Britain often say that when there are lots of berries on trees and bushes in autumn, the winter is going to be a hard one or that if it rains on the 15th of July, ( 18 ) … it will rain each day for the next forty days.
( 19 ) …looking at the clouds can help people to make realistic predictions about what the weather is going to do in the ( 20 )…few hours, modern scientific techniques are the only reasonably reliable way of predicting the weather over a period of several days.
