Master class VOCABULARY GAMES (things that help you to make your lessons interesting and motivate your students.)

I play and try to do each activity together with the teachers but not just tell them everything.

A VICTIM

To practice lexis, phrasal verbs.

Choose the words you would like your students to remember. Make up a short story with those words and write it on the board. The words should be underlined. First, the teacher chooses the word that should be eliminated or rubbed off and does it. Then the teacher chooses the victim, he or she reads out the story using the word that was eliminated and chooses the next word. The teacher rubs it off and the student chooses the next victim to read the story. Then one more word is eliminated and so on until all the words (that should be remembered) are rubbed off. The last victim tries to remember all the words telling the story. The teacher may also ask the students to practice telling the story in pairs. It really works and motivates the students to remember.

Spelling cards. To remember the spelling of the words.

Prepare the cards with the most difficult words for your students. About 7-8 words. The students work in pairs. One of them spells the other writes the words down in the exercise book. Then the other student spells. After that you may ask your students to write the words on the board. Then you may ask them to make up sentences using these words or just a story.

Make the copy of the text from the students’ book.

Remove the words you want your students to draw attention to (you may draw students’ attention to the grammar points or vocabulary) with the fluid corrector. Then the students may listen to the text and fill in the gaps or just fill them without listening or you may ask them to choose the words from the box given. You may also practice the word formation using the texts.

Word box.

You may write all the new vocabulary on special cards and keep them in a box. These must be the words you want your students to learn and to know. You may organize the following vocabulary activities with the help of the word box: ( the students work in pairs swapping the piles of words from the word box)

They read and translate the words explaining those they don’t know to each other

Make up statements, questions or negative sentences with them

Practice the spelling (one spells, the other checks, then they swap with the other pair or group)

Categorizing parts of speech, giving definitions and so on.

Choose some words and make up a story with them

Password game. Before leaving the classroom students must say the password. It must be different for every student. You may use the words from the word box and ask the students to translate them. It will be their own password. Or just show the pictures, the students must name the thing in the picture, make up a sentence using definite structures or grammar or vocabulary.

To help students to remember the words.

Each student chooses the word or irregular word they really can’t remember. Encourage your students to take the most difficult words. Say the word and throw the ball to the student. Remember the student you throw the ball to. He or she says his/her own word and throws the ball to another student. The words must be different and they must remember the student they throw the ball to. Ask them to say the words clearly. Then do it until the ball comes to you again. Then do it for the second time but a bit faster and faster. Each time they say the word they chose at the beginning of the game. Then you may use two balls. Then you should ask them: what was Olga’s word? Or Misha’s word. Ask them to spell or translate or write on the board. They get remember the words. Another variant of the game: ask them to say the words with different emotions.
