THE SPANISH VILLAGE
About 30 miles south of France, on the Mediterranean, is the Spanish village of La Escala.
The population of that village are mostly fishermen, and during the morning you can see them examining and cleaning their boats. They are wonderful people.
But I think that of all the population of La Escala the most interesting are the cats. Cats, cats, and more cats! White ones, blackones, brown ones. And I'm sure they get more and better food that most of the cats in the country!
I saw a cat, one afternoon, walking along the beach; a dead fish was lying on the ground and the cat passed by without even looking at it! I thought it strange. Then a fisherman, who saw my surprise, told me to come back the next morning at six o'clock.
I was on the beach the next morning when it was still dark. The boats were not there. Then I saw them out in the day. Each boat carried about four big lights, which the fishermen used during the night to make the fish come closer.
Gradually the lights went out, the sky became light and the boats began to return. It was then that I saw two cats on the beach. They were sitting on a log, waiting. What were they waiting for? It was very interesting to me. I began to wait too.
The boats came to the beach and the fishermen put their boxes on the sand. The cats came to the boxes. They smelt the fish-boxes because they wanted to decide which fish to take. They never ate dead fish. Each cat took only one fish and carried it away.
