Introduction
Introduction
In this lesson students think about and discuss the advantages and
disadvantages of cycling and consider what else they could do personally to
reduce their carbon emissions.
Procedure
Warmer (7 minutes)
• Checking up the hometask:
The teacher shows a picture of the
bicycle sign and asks pupils to guess about the topic of the lesson. (Pupils answer that the lesson will be devoted to such kind of sport as cуcling.)
Teacher: Well done! You have already guessed that the topic of our today lesson is «Cycling»!
What do you know about this kind of sport?
Is it included in the program of the Olympic games? At home you have prepared short reports about the influence of sport on our health! Who could tell us about the impact of cycling on the health of a man or woman who takes an active part in this kind of sport! Let’s check your hometask! (The pupils answer the teacher’s questions and tell about a great positive affect of cycling on people’s lives.)
Suggesting and accepting (7 minutes)
Teacher: That’s all right! Have you ever seen a real admirer of cycling? Now you will work in pairs and you will have a chance to create and describe a persona who is a real fan of cycling! I will give you the first worksheet on which you can see a model of cyclist. But we don’t know any information about he/her. We don’t know his gender, name, age, the peculiarities of his or her daily routine, time for trainings in cycling, the place where he or she cycles. According to the information from the first worksheet you are to orally describe this man or woman. I will give you 5 minutes for this task. (The pair of pupils one by one present the personality of their cyclists. They also mention the problems what each of their characters have in the process of cycling.)
Teacher:So.. well done! Now let’s sum up your ideas about the personality of an average cyclist. How does he/she look like? What problems does he or she have during the trainings? (The pupils answer the teacher’s questions and tell about the main features which can belong to an average cyclist.)
Then the teacher brings the box with the things which can belong to a professional cyclist ( they are багажник (luggage rack / carrier),бардачок (glove compartment), шлем (helmet),перчатки (gloves),насос (pupm))
Teacher: You are to guess for what purpose these things can be used! (The pupils tell the teacher that, for example, the pump is used to pump a wheel and so on)
Agreeing/ disagreeing (debates) (10 minutes)
Teacher: Now you will work in 2 big groups and we try to decide why cycling is a
good thing! Using worksheet 2, try to debate one by one about the advantages and disadvantages of this kind of activity! The first group will speak only good things about cycling and the second group - only bad things about the same. That group which will have more arguments than the another group will be a winner. You may complete the lists of pros and cons with your own ideas!
Justification (Practicing skills to explain opinion) (7 minutes)
Teacher: Well done! Let’s find out the main 5 problems in the life of a cyclist and then formulate the solutions to these problems! (The pupils answer)
Can an average cyclist solve such problems in a real life? (The pupils answer)
Teacher:Now I’ll ask you to discuss all the solutions which were said out by you and agree on best 5 of them. Then you are to present your ideas to class. Work in groups. (The pupils answer)
Interviewing/Out-come.(Practicing and control functional language and communicative skills) (9 minutes)
Teacher:Now we will check if you are eco-friendly! Could you cycle to school,
why? Why not? etc. (The pupils answer individually and share their opinions with the other pupils in the classroom) Now I will give you the Worksheet 3 for you. You are to complete it alone, then go around the classroom with this sheet of paper to interview a partner. (The pupils go around the classroom to know much more information about the classmates be means of interviewing them.)
The teacher finishes and asks the pupils «Would you be able to ….?» by finding out from whole class how many of these Ss would be able to do… - are any of them impossible etc. (The pupils answer)
The refleсtion ( 3 minutes)
Teacher: How does the lesson make you feel? Bored? Excited? Depressed? Encouraged? Discouraged? Inspired? Motivated? Explain your answer.(The pupils answer the teacher’s questions.)
Using the patterns of the sentences the pupils formulate their attitude to the lesson!

Hometask(2 minutes)
Teacher: Your hometask will be to write a short composition on the theme « The advantages of being a cyclist».
