Интеллектуальная игра «Мы открываем Америку» для учащихся 8-9 классов

«We discover America»

Цели и задачи:

1 Учить учащихся монологическим высказываниям по истории, географии, культуре страны изучаемого языка, традициями, обычаями.

2 Познакомить с разнообразными сторонами жизни американцев, используя богатый иллюстративный предметный материал из США.

3 Привить любовь к познавательной деятельности.

Soundingthesong "America"

Quizmaster: Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, we're glad to sec you here on our intellectual game: "We discover America". Today we're going to devote our game to the USA. So you can take part in different competitions, get a lot of interesting facts about America and of course use this information at your lessons.

Let me introduce our teams: there are 4 teams on our game, all of them are in 8 form, so here are teams A, B, V, G- your applause to our participants. I'd like to introduce the jury of our game:…..

Quizmaster: Dear jury, today you'll have got the very difficult task - to evaluate our participants and give them appropriate marks.

So, let's start, teams are you ready?

Our first competition is your home task, you should have prepared it at home. The first will be the team of……form.

Dear jury, our teams got the home task to prepare the presentations on different

historical topics. Each team got its own task.

I'd like to invite the first team "B" to the stage. Their topic is "the first

settlers of America" They'll tell us about pilgrims and their life on the new

continent.(performance ……..)

Quizmaster: Meet The next team -"G" with the theme "Thanksgiving Day"

The team of 8 A with their presentation- "The day of Independence'"

And at last 8 "V" form will show us the scene- "The US governmem and the

Constitution"

Quizmaster: I'll ask our jury to evaluate the first competition and give marks; the maximum mark for the home task is 5 points. Teams take-your places and I pass a word to our jury. (Who will comment the marks?)………

Quizmaster: Our next competition is called "How to become a millionaire" In this game you have got a chance to make money by your intellect.

Each team in its turn can choose 1 of the categories and some money with a question. As you see the more difficult question is the more dollars you get. But you have only 30 seconds to think. Let's start with you, please choose the 1st question.

GEOGRAPHY

1- Name the greatest river in America. How did the Native Americans call it? (the Mississippi River- the father of waters)

2- What is the smallest state in the USA?

(Rhode Issland)

3- What is the biggest state in the USA?

(Alaska, but Texas is the largest in the continental part of the US (among 48 completed states)

4- Name the oceans and countries that border the USA. (E- the Atlantic Ocean; W- the Pacific ()cean S- the Caribbean sea and the gulf of Mexico; To the North is Canada; to the South is Mexico)

5- How many regions are there in the USA? Why do we group the states into these regions? Name these regions.

(4-the Northeast, the West, the South, the Midwest- because of vast territory and different

climate)

6- What is the largest body of fresh wider in the world that is situated in the USA?

(Great lakes-1. Michigan, 1. Erie. 1. Huron. 1. Ontario, 1. Superior)

7- What is the seaway? Name the main seaway of the USA.

(Seaway is a river and a series of mans made canals that help ships travel to the ocean. St .Lawrence Seaway)

8-Why do we call the Midwest the Breadbasket of America?

(There are no mountains here, most of lands is prairie and all wheat that is grown there.)

9- Why do they say that the Northeast is the historical part of America? (The 1st European settlers came and settled in Massachusetts in 1620)

10-What is the West famous for?

(1-mountains (Rocky Mountain. Cascade M. Sierra Nevada. Sierra Madre) 2-national parks (Yosemite. Grand Canyon, Zion))

11- Name 2 reasons why the South is economically important? (1- 8 of 12 states are coastal - there are a lot of important seaports 2- climate (a lot of rain fall and 200-290 frost-free days) good for farming)

12-What are wetlands? What kinds of wetlands do you know? Where are the famous wetlands of America situated (Everglades, the Big Cypress Swamp)?

(flat area of land where water doesn't run off into rivers or lakes, the water stay- in the flat lands; Marshes-wetlands covered with small plans and grass: Swamps- wetlands covered with trees)

3- Who were the Pilgrims? Where were they from? When did they come?

4-Name the ship of the Pilgrims. How many men and women were there on the

ship? Why did they want to leave England?

5-When did the American Revolutionary war begin and finish? What 2 groups fought in the Revolutionary War?

(1775-1783- 13 colonies fought for their independence against Mother country England)

6-When did the Civil War begin and finish? What was it reason?

(1861-1865-difference between the South and the North and their attitude to the slavery)

7-What is the Declaration of Independence? When was it written?

(1776-13 colonies were now free and independent states: July.4,1776- the day of Independence)

8-What is the Emancipation Proclamation? When was it written? (January, 1,1863-it freed the slaves in the South)

2-Who was the tallest president of the US?

(Abraham Lincoln-16l1)

3-Who was the youngest president of the US?

(John Kennedy-3 5th)

4-Who had a nickname "Red Fox"?

5-Which president's nickname is the name of a popular toy? (Theodore Roosevelt-26n )

6-Which of the US presidents was a famous Hollywood actor? (Ronald Reagan)

7-Who was the Longest serving US president? (Franklin Roosevelt-32nt )

8-Who began the War against the Global terrorism (George Bush the son)

GOVERMENT

1- When and where was the US Constitution written? (1787-Philadelphia)

2- How many senators are there in the US Senate? What is the term of the US senator?

(100-2 from each state -6 year)

3-How many congressmen are there in the House of Representatives? What is the representative's term?

(435-2year)

4-What is the executive branch?

(President and vice president executive departments with secretaries in the head)

5-What is the judicial Branch? What is the main task of the judicial branch?

(the Supreme court, 9 judges - to explain laws, to be sure that President and the Congress follow the Constitution)

6-What are the 1st 10 amendments to the Constitution called? What Righs do these 10 amendments guarantee to people of the USA?

(Bill of Right(1791)-freedom of press, religion, right to go to court, to have a lawer, etc)

7- What did the 13th amendment give? (ended the slavery)

8- What did the 14th amendment make(made Black people citizens of the USA)

9- What did the 15th amendment give? (gave Black people right to vote)

10- What did the 19th amendment give? (gave women right to vote)

Quizmaster: Thank our teams, you've shown very good knowledge and you may count your

money, of course our dollars are not real but every dollar is one point on our game.

Now please, captains of teams take your dollars and give them jury to count your

points.

Dear, jury, please count the points of our teams, and sum them up, don't forget 1

dollar is 1 point…..

Quizmaster: And we continue our game. This competition was rather difficult, but we haven't time to relax the next competition is waiting for you.

The next part of the game will be for participants with long tongue who like to

speak a lot and quickly. As you have guessed it will be the tongue twister

competition .

I'd like to invite 1 person from each team who can prepare (learn) a tongue twister

during 7-10 minutes.

Tongue twister

Betty Better bought some butter.

"But", she said, "this butter is bitter “.

So, she bought some better butter,

And put the better butter in the bitter butter,

And made the bitter butter better.

Quizmaster: (while they prepare)I think our teams need in help of their fans. I invite 2 fans of each team to the

stage. You can help your class and bring 13 points to your team. Your task will be

to do the crossword, don't forget a pan and an eraser.

I give you 15-20 min. Every right word bring you 1 point.

Quizmaster: Let's go on and while our helpers and some participants work, I'd like to deal with our captains. Please, captains of groups, come to me. In my hands you can see coloured stripes. These are proverbs. Your task is to work with these proverbs. Listen to me attentively, you must mach the beginning of the proverbs with die suitable ending and give us the Russian equivalent to each proverb. Every captain has 3 proverbs, so maximum he or she can get 3 points. 1 point -for 1 right connected and translated proverb.

Quizmaster: I pass a word to our jury. Can you sum up the score of our game for 3 competitions?.......

Quizmaster: I think it's time to return to our previous competition with tongue twister.

Are you ready? Who will be the first. Don't forget you will tell us tongue twister,

you should say it as quickly as possible. Jury, pay your attention to the speed right

pronunciation of our participants.(I read the tongue twister myself)

Quizmaster: And I ask the jury to evaluate this competition.

Before the last competition I'd like to work with our fans. Would you like to help your teams and to work a little. OK, good! My dear fans do you like holidays? I'm sure you know some of American's holidays very well, and of course you remember the day of week when the Americans have most of their holidays. What day of week do they replace most of their holidays? (on Monday) So, I will show a date and your task will be to guess what holiday it is.

Quizmaster: And al last our last competition which is called "Cat in the bag" I have got a bag with different things. I will pull out my things, all of them are connected v\ ith the topic of our game, and your task is to recognize the thing and say about this thing as much as possible. Do you get my task? OK let's start. The all information about one thing will bring you 5 points. Dear jury, pay your attention, 5 points for the full answer.

Quizmaster: Our game is finishing. While jury sum up the score, before we know the winner of the game, I'd like to thank all our teams for their hard work; I'd like to thank jury, I'd like to thank all the present people.
