Учитель:

Good afternoon, dear pupils. It’s so lovely to meet you. I hope that Valentine’s Day will bring you lots of fun. We’ll speak about the history of the holiday, listen to poems, write “valentines”, study new words and then we’ll check our knowledge. I hope you will enjoy the lesson. (слайд 1, 2)

Ученик 1:

St. Valentine was actually two people (that weren’t romantically involved) who were martyred on the same day. Feast commemorating them were celebrated on February 14. One was a priest and physician who died in Rome during the persecution of Christians by Claudius II Grothicus. The other was the bishop at Terni, Italy who was also martyred in Rome. Both have been buried at different places along the Flaminian Way.

So why do people send “valentines” or “love tokens” to one another on that day? The origin of that tradition is not thought to have any connection with the saint’s day. Rather it comes from an early European belief that the second week of February was when birds began to mate. The idea suggested that lovers should probably exchange notes and gifts on February 14 in conjunction with what nature practiced. Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is observed as a special day for love and romance. This topic is one of the oldest, and probably most-discussed, issues in history.

I’d like to tell you another legend about this holiday. When the Roman Emperor Claudius 2 needed soldiers, he made a law against marriage. Claudius believed that single young men made better soldiers, and marriage would make men want to stay at home. A kind priest, Valentine by name, saw the love of young couples, so he married them secretly against the law. But valentine was discovered and condemned to death.

May be that’s why we exchange friendly caring messages on this day. And throughout the ages it is a day when boys and girls, sweethearts and lovers, husbands and wives, friends and neighbors, and even office staff exchange greetings of friendship, affection and undying love. Saint Valentine’s Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day when you show your friend or lover how much you love and care about them. You can send candies or flowers to someone you think special. Most people send me, Valentine Card.

Whatever the reasons, people of all ages love to send and receive valentines. Anonymous messages from some shy or tender-hearted may be signed simply “from a secret admirer”. School children typically make valentines for their teachers and classmates and put them in a large decorated mailbox.
