When his father was a young man he was forced into a miserable marriage with an older woman. Monks was born before his parents separated. Then, later on, some 15 years ago, when Monks was about 11 and his father was 31, he became a friend of an older gentleman whose wife had died living his with two daughters.
A………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
But about this time he was left a vast sum of money by one of his rich relatives who had just died. His father had to travel to Rome. And his wife ((the old woman) followed him to Rome when she heard about the inheritance, taking Monks with her. Monks’ mother turned her son against his father. Monks grew up wicked and deceitful as his mother. His father came to his old friend Mr. Brownlow just before he left to Rome.
B…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Monks and his mother inherited everything. Among his father’s papers Monks found two letters. One was addressed to Mr. Brownlow and the other to Agnes – the young girl he loved – who was carrying his unborn child.
C ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
The young girl, Agnes Fleming fell in love with his father too. She didn’t get the letter. She told her father about the unborn child. Mr. Fleming felt disgraced, so he took Agnes and her sister to Wales and called himself by another name.
D ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
In spite of all his searching, his father never found her and he died soon after of broken heart believing that Agnes had killed herself.
E ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
But Monks’ and Oliver’s father did had a will. The will also said that Agnes Fleming and her child were to inherit most of his property.
F ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
That was the reason why Monks planned to turn the boy into a criminal. Mr. Brownlow was able to rescue the boy from a life of crime even before he had known his parentage.
He wrote about his love and the letter said he would marry her one day and give her his good name. He also wrote about the ring and the locket with her name on it.
Mr. Brownlow tried to find the young woman soon after his friend’s death. He wanted to give her and her child a good home with him.
One was only two or three years old, but the other was a very beautiful girl of 19. His father fell in love with her.
Because of her shame Agnes ran away and her baby was born in the workhouse. The child grew up sickly and under-nourished in the workhouse.
That if the child was a boy, he would not receive his inheritance if ever broke the law and brought dishonor upon his name.
He asked Mr. Brownlow to take care of some of his possessions. Among them was a picture of a beautiful girl he wanted to marry. But he died before he could write and tell Mr. Brownlow more.
