E. The illusion of movement

F. A complicated artist

G. Periods of Art

H. Spanish or French

1. The human history has never known a painter whose creative work provoked so many arguments. Picasso’s art has either been spoken highly or badly of. Being extremely complex and varied, it reflected all sharp contradictions of the 20-th century. Pablo Picasso, a Spanish painter, initiator of Cubism and undoubtedly the figure that influenced greatly on the art of the 20-th century, was born at Malaga in 1881. His father was an artist and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts at Barcelona, and under him Picasso got his first lessons in art. After many visits to Paris, he settled in France in 1903.

2. People often discuss if Picasso was a Spanish artist or a French one. He always stayed Spaniard and loved his Motherland passionately; he had a Spanish character, habits, and tastes. The arguments start when art critics try to determinate his place in the world art. French art critics stress Picasso’s Spanish essence and the influence that El Greco, Velazquez and certainly Goya made on him. Picasso is Spanish from head to feet, but all his art is closely connected with the ways of development of French Art in the 20-th century.

3. Like the outstanding painters of Renaissance Picasso was fond of different kinds of art and experienced a lot at first hand. He was a painter and a sculptor, he created theatrical decorations and illustrated books, his drawings were often used for production of tapestry (Gobelin). He had been working all his life without avoiding any rest.

4. The art critics divide his art into several periods depending on the forms he used to express his thoughts and feelings. Picasso had not grown as an artist in the empty space, he accumulated all world culture in his art. He was influenced on by his countrymen, such French artists as Poussin, Ingres, Cezanne and Renaissance giants. The ancient Greek art, the frescoes of Pompeii and, especially African sculpture, brought to Europe in the 19-th century inspired him. He knew, understood and adorned the old art.

5. Picasso often interpreted the images created by his predecessors but in his own manner. Picasso’s Venus was created under the influence of Cranach’s image. Picasso inherited all the traditions of the past but at the same time he destroyed them. Picasso broke the traditional ideas of beauty and ugliness considering the idea of beauty quite conditional. Negroid sculpture shows us a woman that is absolutely unlike Venus of Milo. Picasso said he didn’t copy the nature but he created his images with the help of the nature. He stressed that he showed the world not in the way he should see it but in the way he understood it аnd this idea became the leading one in his art.

6. In 1906 Picasso returned to Spain for the summer. There he studied Spanish Gothic sculpture, and what is more important, ancient Iberian sculpture, which had a simple strength and unrefined proportions. He also was interested in African sculpture аnd under such influence he started to experiment in a ruggedly simplified new style later called Cubism. His aim was to show people a new way of representing the world. Picasso looked at an object or a person and broke them down into shapes such as rectangles, cylinders or cubes. Then he united the elements in complex rhythmical compositions.

7. Picasso’s Venus is placed against a dark background and painted in brown and red tones. Picasso was not afraid of depicting a woman’s nudity. Venus seems to be cut of wood and reminds an archaic statue. The gradation of light and dark tones model Venus’ sharp sculptural forms on the surface of the canvas making her figure voluminous. Venus is full of movement but she is stepping hard towards the spectator because of her massive figure. The figure of Venus is asymmetrical - the right arm is lighter than the left one, the right foot, knee and arm are ready to leave the surface of the canvas, but the left hand leaning on the thigh tries to keep balance. It looks like a stereoscopic effect. The brightest place situated in the center of the picture, on the chest of Venus, is highlighted with burning paints. The whole figure looks alive and demonstrates its strength and power. The combination of ochre tone with the dark background endows the picture with special beauty. The trees at the top of the picture make an arch, behind which the viewer can see a glow bringing some poetical mood. The green spot shades warm tones of the figure. Picasso’s expressive strokes create the illusion of everlasting movement. The painter studies the tectonics of movement that contains its structure and mechanics.

8. Picasso was an extremely complicated artist and so was the epoch which he lived in. His art covers all the 20-th century and the 20-th century found its painter, philosopher and poet in the image of this man. Picasso passionately loved life, however, elements of destruction sometimes captured his art. Matisse said: “We may always admire Picasso-he writes with his blood.”

2. Прочитайте текст еще раз и дайте аргументированные ответы на вопросы:

1. Where was Picasso born?

2. Why do critics argue if Picasso was a Spanish or a French artist?

3. What artistic skills did he have?

4. Who and what influenced his art?

5. What is the main idea of cubism?

6. How did the colors used by the artist help him to create such an impressive image?

7. What techniques were used by the artist to show the movement?

8. What did Matisse say about Picasso?

3. С помощью QR кодов откройте работы Пикассо периода кубизма. Выберите две, понравившиеся вам картины, и выполните следующие задание.

Give a brief description of the photos (action, location);

Say what the pictures have in common;

Say in what way the pictures are different;

Say which of these pictures you would prefer to have in your house.

Пример выполнения задания

I would like to compare and contrast two pictures by Picasso, “The lady with a fan” and “The farmer”. I should say the common theme of these two paintings is an image of a woman. Obliviously, we can see certain differences.

Let me start with the first picture. It shows a lady who may be having a rest in a quiet place after a tiring evening spent at a party or a carnival. She is wearing a dark grey dress. As for the second picture, it shows a peasant woman sitting in her cottage. She may have been working hard on a farm since morning and now she is trying to relax.

As I have already mentioned the most obvious similarity between these two pictures is images of woman having a rest. Besides, the painter used the same technique of cubism to outline asymmetrical forms that make both pictures more impressive.

To my mind, there are more differences than similarities between these paintings. The most obvious different types of woman. The face of “a lady with a fan “reminds a ritual mask. Secondly, their figures have nothing in common. The combination of green and grey colors mixed with red spots makes the Lady’s slim figure look strained. In whole, there is something gloomy and scaring in her image. In contrast, the massive figure of the farmer expresses strength, health and positive attitude to life. Painted in bright colors this peasant woman looks confident and full of inner beauty. I think it personifies “Mother Earth”.

As for me, I would hang “The Farmer” on the wall in my room because I believe this picture might make a positive impression on a person.

In conclusion, I would like to add that painting is a great way of developing an artistic taste. That’s all I wanted to say. Thank you for listening.
