FUTURE LIES IN OUR HANDS
(Time travel)
Introduction.
A.Good afternoon, everybody!
How do you do, kids? I hope you are well, kids.
And I hope you are ready to work.
B. Dear friends! Do you like to travel? Where would you like to travel? Today I’d like to offer you to make a trip to the past and future. You’re a group of young scientists. You’re at a scientific conference. You’re going to take part in a scientific experiment. A newTimeMachine has just been invented. You have an opportunity to take a ride on thisTimeMachine.
Warming-up.
You’re young scientists. You’re from different countries. Tell your partner a few words about yourself. Use the table and your own ideas.
I am | a student, a pupil. |
I am | 15,16, 17,18, etc. |
I am from | Russia, Spain, the USA, Italy, etc. |
I like | Music, sport, painting, reading, books, travelling, swimming, walking, sleeping, learning, the Internet, computers, riding, driving, cooking, dancing, singing, nature, flowers, my friends, my family, my country, my pets. |
Reading. Put on your travel glasses, we are going to visit our far future. Ready? GO! (Music) We are in the year 2050. What can we see here? Read the text and answer my questions.
A. The world is fantastic and attractive. People work three or two days a week. They have machines for every work. People fly to the Moon or other planets to spend their holidays.
They have factories on other planets. A lot of people live and work on farms under the sea. There are big towns under the sea, too, and people use submarines instead of buses and trains.
In the year 2050 they don't have cars. Every family has a helicopter.People travel much. Young people study a lot; they do various courses at universities.
Scientists develop new sciences, open new planets and create new kinds of art. Doctors have medicines for every illness.
People cope with difficult situations easily. Children are happy, nice. Parents are caring and loving. People look beautiful. They go in for sports a lot. Governments fulfill their promises and take care of people.
QUESTIONS: Do you like this future? What do people do on this planet? What else? Where are the factories? What do young people do on the planet? What do governments do on this planet? What people look? How do people cope with difficult situations? Would you like to live here? Why?
B.Let’s visit another planet.
The world isn’t a nice place on the second planet. The trees are all dead. There aren’t any rivers or lakes. There are few animals; many species have died out. Children sit inside all day.
There are too many factories. People work every day. They have no holidays. There are traffic jams on all the roads. It is very noisy. Windows are closed day and night because the air is so dirty. People wear masks in the streets. People can't see the sun because of the smog.
People don't have enough food to eat, and they eat pills instead of fresh vegetables, meat and fruit. Water is too dirty to drink.
People can’t cope with difficult situations. Governments fail to fulfill their promises and take little care of people.
QUESTIONS:Do you like this planet? Why not? Are there any rivers or lakes? Are there any animals? What do people do? What do children do? Can people see the sun? Can people eat fresh vegetables and fruit? What do they eat?
Discussing.Which planet do you like best? Explain your choice.
Exercises.Only a fit scientist can work much. It’s time to have a rest. Please, stand up and do some exercises.
Listening. Now, let’s travel to the past. (On the blackboard: Columbus, Yu. Gagarin, Nicolaus Copernicus, Plato, Leonardo da Vinci, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Aristotle). Listen to the text and say what the text is about. Then choose the picture of the scientist. Match the picture and the number of the text.
This man was born in 384 BC. He lived in ancient Greece. He was a great philosopher, a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great. He was the firstto study time. He began to understand that the earth was not flat but couldn’t prove it. This man gave people first important knowledge of philosophy.(Aristotle)
b) This man lived in the 15th century. In the 15th century people knew only 3 continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. They knew nothing about America. This man was born in 1451 in Italy but lived in Spain. It was very difficult for him to organize an expedition as nobody wanted to help him. At last the Spanish government gave him some money. In the 1492 he sailed with 3 small ships across the Atlantic Ocean. They had been sailing for more than 2 months and at last they saw land. He was sure that the lands he discovered were part of India and he called these islands The West Indias. He made 3 voyages to America. This man gave Europe first important knowledge of the new world. (Columbus)
c) This man lived in the 16th century in Poland. He was a mathematician, astronomer, physician, polyglot, classical scholar, translator, artist , military leader, diplomat and economist. He worked more than 40 years to make a great discovery. He was the first astronomer who said that the sun was the center of the universe and the earth revolved (went) around it. He was very creative. It was a scientific feat.
His book, published in 1543, is regarded as the starting point of modernastronomy that began the scientific revolution. His work was a scientific feat. This man gave people first important knowledge of the Universe. It is called the (Copernican) Revolution.
The text is about… (Nicolaus Copernicus).
d) This man lived in the 20th century. He was born in a small village in Russia /the former Soviet Union, but became the first cosmonaut in the world. On April 12, 1961 he flew into space and spent 108 minutes there. It was the first time in the history of mankind that the Russian spaceship Vostok with the man on board was in space. He was Hero of the Soviet Union. He received medals from around the world for his pioneering tour in space. This man gave people first important knowledge of space travel. (Yuri Gagarin)
Discussing. You’ve just «visited» the Past.Aristotle, Columbus, Nicolaus Copernicus, Yuri Gagarin, each of them gave the world some important knowledge. Which knowledge is the most important for people? For you? Why? Explain your choice. What kind of knowledge would you like to get yourselves and share with the mankind? You are free to choose any group. Give examples. You can defend your idea using «Mimio».
Solving logical problem.Travelling is not easy. You are tired. Let’s rest a bit. And I have a puzzle for you. You’re young scientists. Help me to solve this problem. On the blackboard you see some words. Choose the words which have the same sound and try to arrange (put) them in a logical order and write or paint your variant. You can use your computer, «Mimio», just a piece of paper. Can you explain your choice?
Words: you, student, universe, future, education, truth, school, fun, planet, cool, pupil, history, humanity, useful, blue.
Let’s create your future. Now you have a chance to plan your future. Create it with the help of Prezi presentation. Or make a poster with the help of markers, pencils, paints and models. You can use everything: your talents, ideas, imagination, your textbooks, your computer, the Internet and suitable materials.
X.Summing upthe lesson.Reflection.A.Well, our journey on the TimeMachine has come to the end. The scientific conference is over. What new information have you learnt? What do you think now about future? Knowledge? Have you got now your own ideas about future?
B. Do you like our journey on the TimeMachine? Write a cinquain to show your attitude to the lesson.
Example:Future
Bright, great, promising,
(Or bleak, gloomy and uncertain,)
Time that will come after the present
Expectation
XI.Homework.Your homework for the next lesson is to write a short composition «What we should do to make our future better». Thank you for the lesson. I am going to give you the next marks…The lesson is over. See you later.
