Animals in the City

Small animals like birds, squirrels, mice, cats, and dogs are a common sight in big cities and

small towns. But in recent years, there have been lots of reports in newspapers and on television of wild animals coming into cities in bigger and bigger numbers. There have been bears in Vancouver parks, leopards in the streets of Mumbai and wild pigs in Berlin. Why so? What makes them come? Are they welcome, or are they considered a danger?

One of the main reasons wild animals come to cities is that they are looking for something to

eat. In Cape Town, South Africa, baboons have started coming into residential areas on the edge of the city to feed. They open rubbish containers, looking for something they can eat, or steal fruit from gardens and orchards. The bravest baboons even come into people’s houses and take sweets, cheese, bread and whatever they can find from kitchen cupboards and fridges! You have to remember that baboons can be aggressive and attack people, so people are not at all happy to see such 'guests' in their houses.

The city can be a dangerous place for baboons too and, as an endangered species, we have to

look after them. For this, the Cape Town Сity Council have organised a team of Baboon Monitors. Their job is to chase baboons out of the city, or catch and release them back into the countryside. This policy has already had some success, though it is really hard to stop baboons from coming back to the city once they see it as an easy source of food.

According to the media, the number of wild animals coming into cities is falling.

Baboons come to Cape Town searching for food.

Some baboons have been injured in road accidents.
