Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. It is an American holiday. Thanksgiving Day is national holiday, so most people don’t go to work. People are with their families and friends to give thanks for the good things in their lives. The families come together for a special dinner.

Every Thanksgiving Day there is a very big parade in New York City. Santa Claus arrives at the end. His coming marks the beginning of the Christmas season. Shops, classrooms and homes are decorated with turkeys, pilgrims, Indians, flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Thanksgiving started over 380 years ago with Pilgrims. The Pilgrims who sailed to America were originally members of the English Separatist Church. They wanted to escape religious persecution.

In the hope of a better life, they decided to move out to America. They sailed to a new continent on board the ship "Mayflower".

The Pilgrims reached Plymouth in 1620. There, they had a terrible winter. The Pilgrims were hungry, sick and cold. Their life was difficult and full of danger. Many of them died. But the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims. In the autumn of 1621 the harvest was very good. And the remaining colonists decided to have a special dinner. They had a thanksgiving dinner for all the people. They also invited Indians who had helped the Pilgrims survive their first year. The Indians taught the Pilgrims to plant corn. The feast lasted three days. Wild turkey and corn were part of their feast.

Thanksgiving Day has different symbols.

Cornucopia, full of vegetables and fruit is the most common symbol of a harvest festival. Cranberry is a symbol of thanksgiving. Pilgrims found out a way to sweeten the bitten cranberries with maple sugar. Since that time cranberry sauce is a permanent companion of turkey during thanksgiving feast. Turkey with baked apples is the main dish.

Native Americans taught the pilgrims to grow corns, potatoes, beans. That's why they became symbols of Thanksgiving, too. On Thanksgiving Day people decorate their homes with wreaths, fresh and dried flowers. They also send pretty ‘Thank You’ cards or beautiful ‘Thanksgiving Day’ Gifts to people who did something good for them.

1. Family feast is an important tradition during Thanksgiving. The family sits at the table during dinner. It is also a time for relatives living in different places to come together and celebrate.

2. The traditional turkey is on every dinner table during the feast. The Thanksgiving celebration will be incomplete without turkey. Pumpkin pie, Cranberry sauce, Corns are some of the dishes cooked everywhere during the day.

3. The traditional Thanksgiving parade started with President Lincoln proclaiming it an official day. The parade is a way to display the country's military strength and discipline. In the present day, parades are usually with musical shows and dances.

4 Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the people and blessings of the past year. From pre-meal prayers to providing holiday meals to the homeless, the holiday is a celebration of praise and thanksgiving.

5 Watching NFL football during Thanksgiving is a popular tradition. The traditional game between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers continues. One of the most memorable games are played on this day.
