Introduction
First of all we would like to mention the fact that it’s impossible to learn the English language without reading books in English. When we learn the language we should also learn about the culture of the country and people for whom it is native. Some books are real masterpieces and have become the part of the English culture. We think that “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll is a good example of such a book. That is a real cultural heritage of Great Britain. It is famous all over the world and is considered to be one most unusual in the list of English Literature.
This book has many strange und mysterious characters but the only one is really realistic. It is Alice herself. And her reality seems very vivid on the background of imaginary world. And we have wondered why it is so. At last we decided to write a research work about the main character of the book.
The theme of the research work is the main character of the book “Alice in the Wonderland”
The aim is to find out information about the real prototype of the main character and compare real Alice Liddell with Alice in the book.
The aim dictates the following objectives:
1 to brief biography of the author
2 to write about history of creation of the book
3to find out if there was a real prototype of Alice and in the case there was one to write her biography
to find common features of Alice Liddell and Alice from the book
to make suggestions about the character of Alice Liddell based the character of the book
We think that the theme is really actual because the book is very popular .
We consider that the theme is new because we haven’t found such a research in the Internet.
The Biography of Lewis Carroll.
"Lewis Carroll" was the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. It was created by translating his first and middle names into Latin, reversing their order, and translating them back into English. This happened in 1856 after he had begun writing humorous texts and stories to keep them separate from his serious mathematical writings which he published under his real name.
C
harles Lutwidge Dodgson was born on Jan. 27, 1832. His early years were happy with his nine sisters and two brothers . Sometimes he made up games and wrote stories for them. During his early youth, Dodgson was educated at home. His "reading lists" preserved in the family archives show his perfect intellect: at the age of seven, he was reading books such as The Pilgrim's Progress. He also suffered from a stammer – a condition shared by most of his siblings– that often influenced his social life throughout his years. At the age of twelve, he was sent to Richmond Grammar School (now part of Richmond School) at nearby Richmond. His school years were not so happy because he was shy and often sick. But he was recognized as a good scholar, and in 1850 he was admitted to Christ Church College in Oxford, England. He graduated in 1854, and was appointed a mathematical lecturer at the college the following year.
This appointment was permanent and recognized his academic superiority which also brought him financial security. The appointment meant that Dodgson had to take orders from the Anglican Church and not get married. He published Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There in 1872 (40), The Hunting of the Snark in 1876 (44), and the two volumes of Sylvie and Bruno in 1889 (57) and 1893 (61). He also published a quantity of books and pamphlets on mathematical problems and logic, and various political pamphlets, often humorous in nature. In 1861 he was ordained a deacon. He died in Guildford in 1898 (66), leaving very specific instructions that his funeral should avoid ostentation and unnecessary expense.
The History of the Book.
So the book «Alice's Adventures in Wonderland» was written by the English author and mathematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who used a pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It has become one of the most famous children's books of all time, one that appeals to children as well as adults. The story tells what happens to a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit-hole into a fantasy world which is populated by peculiar imaginary creatures and objects that come alive and have a personality, like talking playing cards.
In 1856 Dodgson met Lorina, Alice and Edith Liddell, the daughters of Henry George Liddell, the Dean of Christ Church College in Oxford. During the next few years he spent a lot of time with the girls, photographed them and made up stories for them.
On July 4, 1862, Dodgson was travelling on a boat to go to a picnic with a friend, Reverend Robinson Duckworth, and the Liddell girls. To keep the girls entertained Dodgson told them a story of a girl named Alice and her magical adventures underground. Alice’s sisters appeared in the story as well. The girls loved the story, and Alice Liddell asked Dodgson to write it down for her.
On 26 November 1864 Dodgson gave Alice the manuscript of Alice's Adventures underground. But before that Dodgson had given the unfinished manuscript to his mentor George MacDonald. His children loved the story and MacDonald advised Dodgson to publish it.
Before submitting it to publication Dodgson was fortunate to have the famous illustrator John Tenniel to draw the illustrations for it. He also decided on the name “Lewis Carroll” which would become his author name. The manuscript was retitled Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. In June 1865, Dodgson's tale was published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by "Lewis Carroll" with illustrations by John Tenniel.
The first print run was only 2,000 copies and it sold out quickly. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was a publishing sensation . It has been translated into 125 languages and it has been a favourite children’s story of children and adults .
Lewis Carroll was encouraged by the success of Alice and he wrote a sequel,Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, published in 1872.
3. ALICE LIDDELL – The main inspiration for Alice in Wonderland.
Alice grew up in the company of the two sisters nearest to her in age: Lorina, who was three years older, and Edith, who was two years younger. Alice Liddell grew up a beauty and in the 1870s she seems to have attracted Queen Victoria’s youngest son, Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, but nothing came of it, though he was later godfather to one of Alice’s sons. In 1880 she married a man called Reginald Hargreaves. Dodgson sent them a wedding present. In 1880 Alice married at the age of 28. They had three sons but unfortunately two of them, Alan Knyveton Hargreaves and Leopold Reginald Hargreaves, were killed in World War I. Caryl Liddell Hargreaves was the only surviving son who was to give Alice her only grandchild, a girl. Alice was an educated woman and she lived the life of a land-lady. She was also an enthusiastic painter. |
After the death of husband Reginald Hargreaves Alice sold her manuscript of "Alice's Adventures Under Ground" in Sotheby’s auction house in 1928. It was bought by an American who paid 15,400 pounds for it. That was an enormous amount of money in those days. In 1932, at the age of 80, Alice published her own memoirs and two years later, on 15 November 1934 In her last years she said she was ‘tired of being Alice in Wonderland’. She died in 1934 at the age of 82. |
Practical part
Do Alice in Wonderland and Alice Liddell have anything in common?
The two Alices are clearly not identical. Though it was long assumed that the fictional Alice was based on Liddell Dodgson himself claimed in later years that his Alice was entirely imaginary and not based upon any real child at all.
There are at least three direct links to Liddell in the two books.
First, he set them on 4 May (Liddell's birthday) and 4 November (her "half-birthday"), and in Through the Looking-Glass the fictional Alice declares that her age is "seven and a half exactly", the same as Liddell on that date.
Second, he dedicated them "to Alice Pleasance Liddell".
Third, there is an acrostic poem at the end of Through the Looking-Glass. Reading downward, taking the first letter of each line, spells out Liddell's full name. The poem has no title in Through the Looking-Glass, but is usually referred to by its first line, "A Boat Beneath a Sunny Sky".
A boat beneath a sunny sky,
Lingering onward dreamily
In an evening of July—
Children three that nestle near,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Pleased a simple tale to hear—
Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memories die.
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes.
Children yet, the tale to hear,
Eager eye and willing ear,
Lovingly shall nestle near.
In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream—
Lingering in the golden gleam—
Life, what is it but a dream?
In addition, all of those who participated in the Thames boating expedition where the story was originally told (Carroll, the Reverend Duckworth and the three Liddell sisters) appear in the chapter "A Caucus-Race and a Long Tale" – but only if Alice Liddell is represented by Alice herself.
The names of the three little sisters in the Dormouse’s story (Elsie, Lacie and Tillie) also refer to the names of the three Liddell sisters. Elsie originated from the initials of Lorina Charlotte, Lacie is a transformation of Alice, and Tillie was short for Matilda, a name given to Edith by her sisters
So there is no doubt that Alice Liddell gave her name to the fictional Alice they differ in appearence. She was in fact not a blonde as illustrated in the book but a brunette.
Conclusion.
Summing up we can say that Alice in the Wonderland appeals to children as well as adults. And it is popular all over the world. Tough the action takes place in fantasy world and all the characters are imagenary the main character has a real prototype.
It was interesting to find out information about Alice Liddell and to reread the book again and again.
We hope to continue our research and to find out other prototypes of fiction characters.
