1.Reading
Read the texts ( A –G) and match them with the headings ( 1-8) One heading is extra. |
1. Global language
2. How it all began
3. Great borrower
4. The language of computers
5. English in other languages
6. French influence
7. Crazy English
8. Do you speak cockney?
A. It’s strange that the differences in Britain itself are greater than those between Britain and other English-speaking countries. For a Londoner, it’s easier to understand an American than a Cockney. Cockney has a pronunciation, accent and vocabulary unlike any other dialect. Cockney speech is famous for its rhyming slang. A word is replaced by a phrase or a person’s name which rhymes with it.
B. Other languages absorb English words too, often giving them new forms and meanings. So many Japanese, French, Spanish and Germans mix English words with their mother tongues that the resulting hybrids are called Japlish, Franglais, Spanglish and Denglish, In Japanese, for example, there is a verb Makudonaru, to eat at McDonald’s.
C. Have you ever wondered why the English language has different words for animals and meat? When William the Conqueror invaded England in 1066, French became the official language of the court. The English would look after the animals and cook the meat, still calling the animals pig, sheep and cow. The Normans, when they saw the cooked meat arrive at their table, would use French words – pork, mutton and beef.
D. English is mixing with other languages around the world. It’s probably the biggest borrower. Words newly coined or in vogue in one language are very often added to English as well. There are words from 120 languages in its vocabulary, including Arabic, French, German, Greek, Italian, Russian, Spanish and Turkish. 70 per cent of the English vocabulary are loan words and only 30 per cent of the words are native.
E. Have you ever wondered how many people speak English? It’s around 400 million people. Geographically, English is the most wide-spread language on earth, and it’s second only to Chinese in the number of people who speak it. It’s spoken in the British Isles, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and much of Canada and South Africa. English is also a second language of another 300 million people living in more than 60 countries.
F. In Shakespeare’s time only a few million people spoke English. All of them lived in what is now Great Britain. Through the centuries, as a result of various historical events, English spread throughout the world. There were only 30,000 words in Old English. Modern English has the largest vocabulary in the world – more than 600,000 words.
G. In the English language blackboards can be green or white, and blackberries are green and then red before they are ripe. There is no egg in eggplant, neither mush nor room in mushroom, neither pine nor apple in pineapple, no ham in hamburger. Why is it that a king rules a kingdom but a queen doesn’t rule a queendom? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? And in what other language can your nose run?

Real art therapy much more potent
Often, the now-ubiquitous adult coloring books will advertise themselves as "art therapy." But actual art therapists contend that such a claim is misleading, that true art therapy is about1)__________________ and relationships and not simply about "feeling better." In light of that, Girija Kaimal, EdD, assistant professor in Drexel University's College of Nursing and Health Professions led a study that shows that while coloring alone does have some positive effect, it is not 2)__________________ as potent as involving an art therapist. "The main takeaway is that coloring has some limited benefits like reducing stress and negative mental states," Kaimal said. "But it does not shift anything else of substance, develop relationships, nor result in any 3)__________________ development." Janell Mensinger, PhD, associate research professor in Drexel's Dornsife School of Public Health, and doctoral stduents Jessica Drass and Rebekka DieterichHartwell -- ran two, separate 40-minute exercises, one consisting of pure coloring and the other involving direct input from an art 4)__________________ , to see if one of the other led to significant differences in mood and stress levels. "Coloring might allow for some reduction in distress or 5)__________________, but since it is a structured task, it might not allow for further 6) __________________ expression, discovery and exploration which we think is associated with the positive mood improvements we saw in the open studio condition," Kaimal said.

The Famous Holiday On Ice
Holiday on Ice originated in the United States in 1943, and was the brainchild of Emery Gilbert of Toledo, Ohio, an engineer and builder who created a portable ice rink. He took his idea of a traveling show to Morris Chalfen, a Minneapolis executive, who supplied the financing, and George Tyson, who used his theatrical background to create the show. Since then over 300 million people have seen the show and it has become the most popular live entertainment in the world.
The shows focus more on music rather than glamour, which has changed from broadway scores to pop and rock. Novelty acts such as acrobats have been added regularly to the main production numbers in recent years, and the backstage atmosphere is an odd mix of gym class and workplace. A curtained-off section at the back of the arena, called the girls' dressing room, is where the girls have a small area for their makeup. It would be more accurately described as a corridor, with beige, cracked walls and cheap temporary tables set up along the length of it.
By no stretch of the imagination could anyone call it an interesting place to work, especially if they saw the rows of dirty blue and brown plastic seating and the grey and mucky area round the ice-rink. But this is a complete contrast to the show itself. The lights come from Texas, the audio system from California, Montreal supplies the smoke effects and former British Olympic skater Robin Cousins, MBE, is now creative director for the company.
He has a simple theory to describe what he wants to do. He wants to give the people what they want to see, but in a way that they did not expect, leaving them stunned and amazed. The music is used to stimulate the audience, but more importantly to inspire the skaters, who have to repeat the show every night. His aim is to make sure everyone gets to exactly the right place on the ice at the right time, because the banks of lights in the ceiling are set to those places, and if the skaters are all half a metre out, they'll be illuminating empty ice. Finally, he needs to produce something that can be sold in a number of countries at the same time.
Professional ice skating is not very well paid and Cousins had to skate for the show himself when he stopped competing because he was financially unable to retire. He learnt the hard way that it was impossible to give championship winning performances every night, and had to compromise by giving about 75 % regularly. So, even though he does what he does to pay the rent, his enthusiasm is unmistakable. He also makes the point that many of the moves in the show can never be seen in competition because the rules don't allow them.
So, if you ever get the chance to see Holiday on Ice, don't miss it, because it's impossible not to be swept up in the whole thing and you'll have to try pretty hard not to enjoy it.
