What is the Most Popular Food in Britain?

Britain’s most popular "fast food" has got to be fish and chips. Fish and chip shops first made an appearance at the end of the 19th century. The dish is simplicity itself: Fish is dipped in a batter made from flour, eggs and water and then deep fried in hot fat. Chips are made from thick batons of potato and deep fried. Fish and chips are served over the counter wrapped in paper, and traditionalists prefer to eat them straight out of the paper because they taste better that way!

The best-known British dish eaten at home has been roast beef, traditionally eaten on Sunday. The dish used to be so popular in England that the French still refer to the British as "les rosbifs"! Roast beef is served with roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy (подливка) – a sauce made from meat juices and stock (крепкийбульонизкостей), thickened with flour. Yorkshire pudding is a favourite accompaniment to roast beef.

Yorkshire pudding.

What makes a Sunday for us Brits? The Sunday roast, of course.

And most Brits would argue that any roast dinner (whether beef or not!) is made even more delicious and satisfying thanks to the much-loved Yorkshire pudding.

This weekend, the nation's set to celebrate this enjoyable addition to our dinner plates with National Yorkshire Pudding Day, taking place on Sunday 7th February. Read on to become an expert in all things Yorkshire pudding and join the celebration and enjoy a roast dinner with extra Yorkshires on National Yorkshire Pudding Day.

1. Age-old recipe - the first Yorkshire pudding recipe dates back to 1747 and was drafted by Hannah Glasse, an English cookery writer of the 18th century - a kind of Nigella Lawson of her day.

2. Not got beef? - If beef isn't on the menu, you're still in luck! The custom of eating Yorkshire puddings exclusively with roast beef is actually a fairly recent one. An 18th century cook book, The Whole Duty of a Woman, suggests they can be eaten with any meat.

3. Recipe debate - The ingredients and cooking method of Yorkshire puddings are often debated.

One common discussion is around whether the batter should be made and left for a while - or overnight - or whipped up and used straight away. Most chefs seem to agree, though, that the fat in the tray must be extremely hot.

4.Pudding expert - Yorkshireman Christopher Blackburn is from Halifax and loves Yorkshire puds so much that he created a website extolling the virtues of this traditional dish. His is also the reigning Yorkshire pudding champion.

5. Easy to make - According to Christopher, the best recipe ingredients are - 225g Plain Flour, 4 Eggs, 300ml Milk, 1 tsp Salt, 1/8 tsp White Pepper. To make, sift the flour and salt in to a large bowl and add the beaten eggs and half the milk. Whisk until it resembles wall paper paste (needs to be very smooth) add the rest of the Milk and again whisk to form the batter, let it rest for 30 mins, this can be speeded up by placing it in the fridge for 10 mins.

6.Puds for starter - It's believed that the traditional way to eat a Yorkshire pudding was actually as a separate course before a meal. Folklore reveals that this was a sneaky trick used by mums to fill the family up so they could serve less meat (which was the expensive part of the meal).

7. Puds for dessert - Yorkshires are more versatile than you think. They can be a seriously scrummy dessert option too when teamed with strawberries and ice cream, or other sweet ingredients, say Aunt Bessies who sell their ready prepared Yorkshire's on the high street.

8. Mountains of puddings - Aunt Bessies makes up to a whopping 20 million Yorkshire puds every week.

Yorkshire puddings are easy to make and use ingredients most people always have lying around

9. A tall story - In order to be called a Yorkshire pudding, the dish needs to have risen to at least 4 inches high, says Christopher Blackburn, quoting the Royal Society of Chemistry.

10. Yorkshire puddings and Mars bars - One of the most unusual desserts was created by Yorkshire pudding expert and chef Ben Cox. His team at The Star at Sancton, have been known to serve up a dessert - a pud served with a chocolate sauce (instead of gravy). Testing of various chocolates proved Mars bars helped to make the best recipe.

What is Haggis?

Haggis is Scotland’s best-known regional dish made from lamb’s offal (lungs, liver and heart) mixed with onions, herbs and spices, all packed into a skin made of plastic, or, traditionally, a sheep’s stomach.

The haggis is often accompanied by mashed potatoes and mashed swede (брюква) or turnips (репа). Although the haggis neither sounds nor looks appetising, most people brave enough to try it agree that it is extremely tasty!
