Father Frost and Santa Claus

Father Frost and Santa Claus are two famous characters who bring joy and presents during the winter holidays. These magicians make winter days special and full of wonder for children all over the world!

Santa Claus (or Saint Nick) is a symbol of Christmas in many Western countries.
This old man usually wears a red suit with white fur trim and a black belt. He has a long white beard and a cheerful smile.

People in Europe celebrate Christmas on December 25. Children believe that Santa Claus brings presents on Christmas Eve – the night of December 24. They often write letters to Santa Claus and tell him what presents they want.

Santa Claus lives at the North Pole. Before Christmas Santa and his helpers – elves – work hard in a workshop to make all presents. Santa’s wife – Mrs. Claus – also works a lot to check up list of children, who ask Santa for present, and knows about their behavior during the year. If children were naughty, Santa Claus gives them lumps of coal instead of presents.

Santa travels in a magical sleigh pulled by flying reindeer with Rudolph the Red-Nose as a leader. Santa enters houses through the chimney when all the children are sleeping and leaves
presents under the Christmas tree or put them in the stockings hanging over the fireplace.
Children usually prepare a treat for Santa – milk and sweet biscuits.

Father Frost (Ded Moroz in Russian) is a symbol of the New Year in Russia and some other Slavonic countries. He brings presents on New Year’s Eve – the night of December 31. People celebrate the New Year on January 1.

Father Frost lives in Velikiy Ustug. Traditionally, he wears a long blue or silver fur coat with beautiful patterns, but sometimes he wears red colours. He has a long white beard and carries a magic staff.

Father Frost travels in a troika – a traditional Russian sleigh pulled by three horses. He enters houses through the door and leaves presents under the New Year tree. Father Frost has a young assistant – Snegurochka (the Snow Maiden), who is his granddaughter. When they come into the house, if they see children, Father Frost asks them to sing songs or read poems or dance, and then gives them presents.
