THANKSGIVING

A long time ago, the Pilgrims lived in England. All the people there had to pray in the Church of England. The Pilgrims didn’t like it. They decided to go to America. In 1620 the Pilgrims left for America. Their ship was the Mayflower. The trip took 66 days. The weather was rainy and cold. The Pilgrims landed in November. They started a town called Plymouth. It was too cold to grow food. The first winter in Plymouth was terrible. There was little food. Many Pilgrims became sick and died.

Native Americans lived in forests near Plymouth. They came and helped the Pilgrims. Native Americans taught the Pilgrims to fish and hunt for deer and turkeys in the forests. The Pilgrims worked hard. They planted seeds to grow food. They built houses and a church.

By November 1621 the Pilgrims had a lot food. They were very happy and decided to have a Thanksgiving party. They invited the Native Americans. This Thanksgiving party lasted for three days. The Pilgrims gave thanks to God for helping them. They said “thank you” to the Native Americans for helping them. This was the first Thanksgiving party in America.

Today Thanksgiving is a big festival in the USA and Canada to celebrate the harvest. Americans have a celebration in November. Some cities have street parades. People decorate their houses – they use a variety of decorations, such as candles, apples, leaves, corn and pumpkins – and have family dinners. People exchange gifts - Thanksgiving cards, flowers and baskets with cookies, dry fruits and chocolates. They also make some special dishes. Turkey, yams (sweet potatoes) and cranberry sauce are popular foods. There’s always a sweet pumpkin pie for dessert. Thanksgiving Day is a time for many people to give thanks for what they have.
