Outstanding People of Russia and English-speaking Countries: Scientists

Dmitri Mendeleev: A Scientist Who Changed Chemistry

Shape12Shape11

Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was an outstanding Russian scientist. He was born in Tobolsk in 1834.

Mendeleev is best known for discovering the Periodic Law of chemical elements. However, his scientific interests were much wider than chemistry. He also worked in physics, meteorology, geology, instrument making, economics and other fields.

His work helped organise knowledge about chemical elements into a scientific system. The Periodic Law became one of his greatest contributions to science.

Mendeleev’s legacy is not limited to one discovery. He was also involved in the development of metrology in Russia and had a wide range of scientific and practical interests.

Today his works, correspondence and documents connected with his scientific, educational and public activity are preserved and studied. They allow new generations to learn not only about his discoveries but also about the history of Russian science.
