Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Music That Outlived Its Creator

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was one of the most important Russian composers of the nineteenth century. He lived from 1840 to 1893 and received professional musical education in St Petersburg.

Tchaikovsky worked in many musical genres. He composed symphonies, operas, ballets and other works. His music became known not only in Russia but also abroad. Among the works associated with his worldwide fame are the ballets Swan Lake,The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker, as well as famous operas.

Tchaikovsky was also connected with the development of professional musical education in Russia. After moving to Moscow, he taught at the institution that became the Moscow Conservatory.

The composer’s legacy has been carefully preserved. His house in Klin became a memorial museum soon after his death. Today its collections include his letters, diaries, musical manuscripts, photographs and personal belongings.

These materials allow us to do something that music alone cannot do: they help usunderstand the person behind the famous compositions and preserve evidence about the history of Russian musical culture.
