Dialogue 1. Monday morning

Characters: Mr and Mrs Doyle, their children Karen and Jimmy.

It’s Monday morning at the Doyles’house.

Mrs Doyle: Hurry up, Karen! It’s 8.30.

Karen: Coming!

Mr Doyle: Here she is at last.

K: Pass the cornflakes, Jimmy…Thanks.

Mr: What time did you get back last night, Karen?

K: Oh, about 11.30.

Mr: 11.30! That’s very late. And what did you do?

K: I went to a disco.

Mr: Who with?

K: Oh, some friends…

Mr: Look. Karen, how many times do I have to tell you? You’ve got some important exams at school this year and…

K: Yes, I know that, Dad.

Mr: Well then, why don’t you do something about it? You can’t study and go out every night…Well, time for work. Bye, Susan, see you this evening.

Mrs: Bye, dear.

Jimmy: Did you enjoy it?

K: What?

J: The disco.

K: Yes, it was great!

Mrs: Come on, you two. You’ll be late for school!

Dialogue 2. Karen’s fed up.

It’s the last lesson of the morning at Kilburn Comprehensive school.

Janice: Can I borrow your ruler, Karen?

Karen: Yes, OK.

J: Hey, what’s the matter with you today,?

K: Oh, I don’t know. I’m just bored., I suppose. What do you want to do next year, Janice?

J: Stay at school, I think. I really like French and History. What about you?

K: I don’t know. I’m fed up with school. I want to get a job.

J: Why don’t you go and see Mr James?

K: The careers officer?

J: Yes, I saw him last week. He’s very helpful.

K: Thank goodness for that!

J: Oh, I nearly forgot. I’m having a party on Friday. Do you want to come?

K: Yes, of course.

J: Have you got a cassette recorder, Karen? Mine’s broken.

K: Yes, I have. And I can bring some of the cassettes, too.

Dialogue 3. At the Athletics club.

Karen in in the cafeteria at Willesden Athletics Club.

Steven: Can I sit here, please?

Karen: Yes, of course. You do the long jump, don’t you?

S: Yes, that’s right. What about you?

K: Oh, I do the 400 metres.

S: What’s your name?

K: Karen…Karen Doyle.

S: Well, I’m Steven Watson. Where do you live?

K: In Kilburn…Honiton Road.

S: Oh, I know. I live in Willesden…in Ashdon Road. How often do you come to the club?

K: Oh, once or twice a week. On Mondays and Thursdays, usually.

S: Yes, me too.

K: Are you still at school?

S: Well, I’m doing my A-level at Cricklewood College. Which school do you go to?

K: I go to Kilburn Comprehensive. I’m doing my GCSE exams this year. It’s a bit boring!

S: Yes, I know.

K: Oh, there’s my dad.

Mr Doyle: Come on, Karen.

K: OK, Dad. Bye, Stephen.

S: Bye, Karen. See you on Thursday.

Dialogue 4. Steven or Rod.

It’s Tuesday. Karen is at Janice’s house.

J: Did you go to the athletics club last night, Karen?

K: Yes, I did. It was great.

J: Oh, yes, why?

K: Well, I met a boy called Steven.

J: Ooh! What about Rod Smith?

K: Oh, I’m not really interested in him.

J: Really? I quite like Rod.

K: But Steven’s much nicer.

J: What’s he like?

K: He’s very good-looking.

J: Is he?

K: He’s tall and slim, and he’s got short brown hair.

J: Where does he live?

K: In Willesden.

J: Where does he go to school?

K: Cricklewood College.

J: So, he’s older than you.

K: Yes, he’s seventeen.

Mrs Garner: Karen, Janice! Do you want to stay for tea, Karen?

K: No thanks, Mrs Garner. I’ve got to go now. I’ve got to babysit this evening.

Dialogue 5. Babysitting for the Dawes

Geoff Dawes, Karen’s guitar teacher, and his wife Cathy are going out tonight. Karen is babysitting for them.

C: Oh, hello, Karen. Come in. How are you?

K: Oh, OK. Where is Jonathan?

C: He’s already in bed. He was very tired this evening.

K: Oh, good. I’ve got a lot of homework to do.

C: Would you like something to eat?

K: Well, I’m not very hungry really. Have you got any yoghurt?

C: Yes, it’s in the fridge…on the top shelf. And if you get thirsty, there’s some orange juice on the bottom shelf. Just help yourself!

K: Thank you. What time does the concert start?

C: At half past eight. What time is it now?

K: It’s quarter to eight.

C: Oh, it’s time to go then. Geoff, , come on, hurry up!

G: I’m just feeding the cat!

C: We’ll be back about quarter past eleven, Karen.

K: OK. Have a nice time.

C: Thanks, bye!

G: Bye, Karen.

Dialogue 6.

The characters: Karen, Geoff, her guitar tutor, his son Jonathan, Cathy. Karen is talking to Geoff after her guitar lesson. It’s Jonathan’s birthday. Cathy is preparing the food for the party.

K: That was a great lesson today. Thanks, Geoff.

G: Yes, I enjoyed it, too. You’re getting a lot better.

C: Would you like a cup of tea, Karen?

K: Yes, please. How many kids are coming to your party, Jonathan?

J: About ten.

K: Ten! That’s a lot! Shall I stay and help you, Cathy?

C: Ooh, yes, please, here’s your tea.

K: Thanks. Hey, Geoff, what do you think of Mike Oldfield?

G: I think, he’s great. Why?

K: Well, there’s one of his concerts on TV tomorrow night.

G: Oh, really! I’ll have to watch that.

C: Oh, no! They’ve arrived!

K: Well, Cathy, what do you want me to do?
