Have you ever been to a vast steppe? Have you seen beautiful tulips and other field plants which decorate the steppe? Have you met a herd of wild horses known for their love to freedom and independence? Then we invite you to visit the nature reserve Rostovsky.

STATE NATURAL RESERVE "ROSTOVSKY"

The first and the only state nature reserve in Rostov Region was founded in December 1995. The reserve is a real authentic treasure of Orlovsky's steppes. It is situated in the south-eastern part of Rostov region and consists of four territories, lying to the west Manych valley. The total area of the reserve is 9,5 thousand hectares.

The reserve "Rostovsky" is not only an area of dry land. One can meet different ecosystems there: freshwater ecosystems with rich plants and unique animals, coastline, islands of saltwater reservoirm, lake Manych Gudilo.

The largest area is Ostrovnoy district which is situated on the island Vodny. This area is famous for its rare kinds of birds. Spoonbills, small white and grey ardeas are found on numerous tiny islands with reed beds bushes. The salt lake Manych Gudilo is an arterial waterway of some birds on their way to warm places. The lake got its name because of the noise it made in windy weather. The roar was heard on long distances. Nowadays the lake has become calmer as if understanding that it is under people's concern. Being the place of seasonal gathering of birds, Manych Gudilo was included in the list of objects of the Ramsar Convention on wetlands of international importance. As for the Ostrovnoy area, it is recognized as a key ornithological territory which has an international recognition. The island is covered with colorful tulips and other unusual steppe plants. The territory is also famous for its wild horses, the only ungulates of the island. There are few places on our planet where we can see free horses in endless, vast steppes. Strong stallions with shaggy manes protect their mares, sometimes they fight furiously to be the first. The view leaves unforgettable impression and has a great value.

Starikovsky territory represents a typical dry steppe. The peculiarity of the area is its dingles which make the Starikovsky territory attractive. Along salty springs and on the bottom of gullies one can see white salt crystals of different forms. The main part of the area is covered by saltmarsh vegetation as well as glasswort species. In summer they have bright yellow colour which is seen from long distance. In autumn the colour turns into red. The territory of Starikovsky area is the habitat of vipers, frogs, lizards, pink starling.

Lysaya Gora is the name of the hill. It is a static symbol of endurance. In any weather the hill stands proudly, viewing the outskirts. The sun heats it up mercilessly, the wind trifles its sand. However, Lysaya Gora domineers the steppe.

Krasnopartizansky territory represents ecosystem of dry steppes. It is located in Remontnensky district. Its total area is 1768,4 hectares.

The territory Tsagan-Khak represents mainly botanic interests. The territory is much smaller than other territories. It is situated in Remontnensky district.

It would be very interesting to make a tour round the steppes to admire the virgin land of Russian nature. If you want to see an azure steppe in spring you should join an ecological path "An azure flower". You will have a possibility to see nature in its original beauty: to hear larks' singing, to watch plants, which are included in the Red Book, and salt lakes. Spring motley grass is worth seeing because of its unusually original colour and intoxicating smell.

For those who like hiking, climbing the hills, listening to the roar of the noisy lake we suggest another ecological tourist path, "Mysteries of Manych valley". Tourists will see the lake with its inhabitants and unusual plants. They will take photos with STONE BABA, which is one of the symbols of the reserve. Tourists can watch wild horses, go boating and drink kumys, the tastiest and the most useful drink.
