Reading

Teacher:One of the most important historic monuments of Sevastopol is Chersonese. Let’s read the text about it.

TEXT

Chersonese was the last Greek Colony of the Black Sea. It was founded in 422 BC. In the words of Cicero it was like a border sewn on the barbarian lands. The colony was founded by residents of a Greek town of Heraclea, named after the hero. There are many images of Heracles in marble, bronze, clay and on the coins.

Chersonese (Dry Land Peninsula) was so named for its location on a peninsula between two bays. The city existed for 2,000 years. Agriculture, construction, pottery-making, bone-carving, and some other crafts flourished in Chersonese. Greek masters were known for pottery painting.

Chersonese was a slave-owning democratic republic. By the first century A.D.

Chersonese had fallen to the Roman Empire. Roman Portrait sculpture was wide spread in Chersonese. After the division of the Empire in 395 Chersonese came under Byzantine under name of Cherson (Korsun).

Chersonese was well known. It was chief Byzantine bastion in Crimea until the 13 century when the Golden Horde had established its rule. Cherson was left in ruins.

The First excavations in Chersonese were conducted in 1927. Chersonese has become a major research and educational establishment. Today the visitors can stroll along the ancient streets and squares, admire the white marble columns on the seashore. The picturesque landscapes of Chersonese attract many tourists. They come to see the mosaic panels and marble columns, painted pottery and tombstones of residents of Chersonese.

There are modern theatrical presentations in Chersonese today. They take place at the same place as many years ago.

Answer these questions:

1. What attracts tourists in Chersonese?

2. Who was the hero of Chersonese?

3. When did the first excavations in Chersonese begin?

4. What crafts flourished in Chersonese?

Please, listen to the conversation of two friends.

Аудиозапись диалога.

- It's already June and we still haven't planned our trip to Sochi. We have to buy the tickets now, otherwise only the most expensive will be left.

- You are right. Let’s go to the station to buy the train tickets.- Train? Why don't we go by plane? The price is the same.

- You know that I'm afraid of flying on a plane. Besides, I always feel sick.

- From Moscow to Sochi by train is close to 2 days! Do you really want to spend two days in an uncomfortable train?

- But I like it. I can drink tea and watch through the window.- I always get children who scream or men who snore.

- But by train there’s almost never an accident...

- Planes fall very rarely too. Besides, you love buying present at the duty free.

- Ok, you have convinced me.

Let’s discuss the dialogue:

it really dangerous?

Are you frightened of plane trips? Why?

How about sea voyage? Do you like it?

What way of travelling do you prefer?

Is it expensive for you to make long distance trips?
