Seasons and Climate in Primorye

There are four seasons in a year. They are spring, summer, autumn and winter. Every season is beautiful in its way. The climate in our region is various. It differs from the South to the North. It is more continental to the North and marine to the South. The position of our region (we are almost on the same longitude as the Crimea) and the influence of the sea are the basic factors in determining the main characteristics of the climate here. It combines both the continental features of Northeast Asia and subtropical of Southeast Asia. Spring is a wonderful season. Spring comes and nature awakens from the winter sleep. In Primorye spring is long and drawn out. At the end of March there may be great snowfalls but the snow melts quickly. It becomes warmer and foggier. The nights are shorter, the days are longer. There are gales at the sea. The average temperature is 15 – 17 degrees above 0 C but in May the weather is lovely. The ground is covered with green fresh grass and the first spring flowers. He trees are covered with new leaves and blossoms. The air is fresh and the sun shines brightly. The days are warm and everything is full of life and joy. Birds come back from the South. Then summer comes. In Primorye summer sets in when the temperature is above 15degrees. Summer is the warmest season of the year but it is the rainiest and the foggiest season of the year too. The gardens are full of berries, flowers, vegetables. The woods are full of mushrooms. Everybody enjoys summer. A lot of people have a rest in this season. We are lucky to live on the seashore so we spend our holidays and weekends swimming, diving and lying in the sun. August is the warmest month with average temperatures between 17,4 and 23,5 degrees C. But in August the region has special pouring rains – typhoons, they are dangerous for communication and agricultural fields. Autumn begins in September. I think it is the best season in our places. The average temperature is 18 – 20 degrees above 0. The weather is sunny, warm and dry. “Indian Summer” is great but then the weather changes and it gets colder and colder. When it rains or drizzles the streets are covered with slush and mud. Autumn is a harvest time, the time when grape, fruit and vegetables become ripe. Winter in our region is cold especially in the North. The temperature is 10 – 20 degrees below 0. It doesn’t often snow. The ground is frozen over. The rivers are locked by the frost. The cutting north wind blows and drives the snow. The coldest month is January, the windiest one is February. We like winter with its frosty, sunny and snowy days. It’s a pleasure to walk, to play snowballs, to skate and ski.
