Philology is the study of language in oral and written historical sources; it is the intersection between literary criticism, history, and linguistics. Philology is more commonly defined as the study of literary texts as well as oral and written records, the establishment of their authenticity and their original form, and the determination of their meaning. A person who pursues this kind of study is known as a philologist. In older usage, especially British, philology is more general, covering comparative and historical linguistics.

FOREIGN PHILOLOGY

Philology is the study of language in oral and written historical sources; it is the intersection between literary criticism, history, and linguistics.[1] Philology is more commonly defined as the study of literary texts as well as oral and written records, the establishment of their authenticity and their original form, and the determination of their meaning. A person who pursues this kind of study is known as a philologist. In older usage, especially British, philology is more general, covering comparative and historical linguistics.

Classical philology studiesclassical languages. Classical philology principally originated from the Library of Pergamum and the Library of Alexandria[4] around the fourth century BCE, continued by Greeks and Romans throughout the Roman/Byzantine Empire. It was preserved and promoted during the Islamic Golden Age, and eventually resumed by European scholars of the Renaissance, where it was soon joined by philologies of other non-Asian (European) (Germanic,Celtic), Eurasian (Slavistics, etc.) and Asian (Arabic,Persian,Sanskrit,Chinese, etc.) languages. Indo-European studies involves the comparative philology of all Indo-European languages.

Philology, with its focus on historical development (diachronic analysis), is contrasted with linguistics due to Ferdinand de Saussure's insistence on the importance of synchronic analysis. The contrast continued with the emergence of structuralism and Chomskyan linguistics alongside its emphasis on syntax.

The study programme offers studies of two languages, which make it more attractive in the present-day labour market. The design of the competences to be developed in the programme is based on a survey in professional field research. It is expected that a broad academic and intercultural education will provide an opportunity for programme graduates to get jobs in positions requiring skills and competences developed in the programme. The programme provide access to the second-cycle (MA) study programmes at universities.

The study programme is aimed at advancing students' knowledge in the English language and another foreign language (French or German or Russian), culture and literature, developing students' ability to apply their knowledge in practice in different communicative situations and discourses. The focus is put on speaking, writing and listening skills in social as well as academic spheres of language use.

Students will analyse and report on topics related to an individual and society, forms of government, political life, art, literature, the media issues, Moreover, students will enrich academic and meta-language discourse by analysing and interpreting essays, literary and newspaper texts within humanistic, academic, intercultural, social, political, and psychological contexts by making presentations and taking part in a discussion.

Writing skills will be developed directly by writing and analysing a paragraph, a descriptive/cause and effect/comparison and contrast essays, a CV, an application letter, and writing a review of an event.

Students are encouraged to reflect on and consistently evaluate personal achievments and to set own learning goals, decide on effective methods as well as select appropriate study materials from accessible in order to develop their own competences.
