Simultaneous interpretation is a popular method ofinterpreting that differs from that of consecutiveinterpretation. Simultaneous interpreters convert what is said in real-time. There are no pauses in conversation.

Features of the profession

Simultaneous translation (so-called synchronous) is not without reason considered the most difficult type of interpretation.

A simultaneous interpreter translates phrases right at the moment when a speaker utters these phrases. He can lag behind the speaker no more than half a phrase.

There is an easier way to translate - consistent. This is when the speaker makes his speech with a few stops - these pauses are quite enough for the translator, having listened to the phrase to the end, correctly translated it.

However, this method takes too much time and is not suitable for large conferences, radio broadcasts, etc.

To a novice translator, simultaneous translation is a fantastic acrobatics. And in fact, how is this possible - the speaker has not yet completed his thought, but the translator already formulates the phrase in Russian and conveys to the audience?

Partly, the matter is facilitated by the fact that in modern languages ​​about half of the words are uninformative. Say, official words, auxiliary verbs, repeated mentioning of some concepts - all this does not contain new information, but it helps the translator to orient, to understand what the speaker is headed for.

Such work requires a great mental strain and concentration from the translator.

However, nothing will happen without knowledge of the vocabulary. A professional simultaneous translator has to work with a wide variety of topics - from medicine to space. In order to feel good about a highly specialized subject, he has to learn terminology, seriously prepare for translation. Say, to hold a conference or a round table on nuclear energy, you need to know the terms used by experts. It is even better if the translator imagines the essence of the problems discussed.

Simultaneous translation is also an emotional stress. As the translators themselves say, with this work, every now and then you have to act “right off the bat and into the quarry.”

If the speaker speaks too quickly, the synchronist has to shorten what was said, cutting off the secondary. There is no time for thinking, but there is no right to blunder either.

Technically simultaneous translation is provided by special equipment.
