Foreign philology
A foreign language is a language originally from another country. It is also a language not spoken in the native country of the person referred to, i.e., an English speaker living in Spain can say that Spanish is a foreign language to him or her. These two characterisations do not exhaust the possible definitions, however, and the label is occasionally applied in ways that are variously misleading or factually inaccurate.

Some children learn more than one language from birth or from a very young age: they are bilingual or multilingual. These children can be said to have two, three or more mother tongues: neither language is foreign to that child, even if one language is a foreign language for the vast majority of people in the child's birth country. For example, a child learning English from his English father and Irish at school in Ireland can speak both English and Irish, but neither is a foreign language to him. This is common in countries such as India, South Africa, or Canada due to these countries having multiple official languages.
In general, it is believed that children have advantage to learning a foreign language over adults. However, there are studies which have shown adult students are better at foreign language learning than child students. It is because adults have pre-existing knowledge of how grammar works, and a superior ability of memorizing vocabulary. In a multi-lingual and multi-cultural world, the Foreign Philology programme aims to provide young philologists with the superior scientific qualifications that will assist them in their future professional careers. Philology is a multi-level discipline which has many aspects, from the restoration of texts to their thorough interpretation. It offers a great breadth and variety, distinction and diversity as the texts it studies; however, in terms of methodology it is uniform and founded upon the theory of artistic speech, literature and the history of ideas. The undergraduate Foreign Philology provides comprehensive training in all areas of English Language studies. Course work is offered in Grammar, advanced literature, historical periods, important authors and literary movements, literary theory and linguistics. All students develop a broad competence in general topics of English language philology before moving to a more specialized knowledge of a single area or topic.
The study programme offers studies of two languages, which make it more attractive in the present-day labour market. The design of the competences to be developed in the programme is based on a survey in professional field research. It is expected that a broad academic and intercultural education will provide an opportunity for programme graduates to get jobs in positions requiring skills and competences developed in the programme.
The programme provide access to the second-cycle (MA) study programmes at universities.
The study programme is aimed at advancing students' knowledge in the English language and another foreign language (French or German or Russian), culture and literature, developing students' ability to apply their knowledge in practice in different communicative situations and discourses. The focus is put on speaking, writing and listening skills in social as well as academic spheres of language use.
Students will analyse and report on topics related to an individual and society, forms of government, political life, art, literature, the media issues, Moreover, students will enrich academic and meta-language discourse by analysing and interpreting essays, literary and newspaper texts within humanistic, academic, intercultural, social, political, and psychological contexts by making presentations and taking part in a discussion.
Writing skills will be developed directly by writing and analysing a paragraph, a descriptive/cause and effect/comparison and contrast essays, a CV, an application letter, and writing a review of an event.
Students are encouraged to reflect on and consistently evaluate personal achievments and to set own learning goals, decide on effective methods as well as select appropriate study materials from accessible in order to develop their own competences.
Students can go for one semester on Erasmus Programme.
The four-year Bachelor’s degree study programme of English Philology and the Second Foreign Language (French or German or Russian) at the Faculty of Philology of Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences (Vilnius, Lithuania) provides undergraduates with an integrated study of 1) the English language, literature and cultSome people believe that foreign languages are really important in every day life. At the same time others hold the idea that knowing foreign languages is useless. It seems to me that learning foreign language it is an important life skill. Especially if this foreign language is an international language. First of all, foreign languages help us to communicate with people all around the world. Secondly, knowing a foreign language makes it easy to travel to different countries - we can communicate with native people. Furthermore, if you know any foreign language you will be able to read original books, original movies which can help to understand the world around us better. Nevertheless, there are people who have an opposite opinion. УБРАТЬРЕКЛАМУ,ПОДПИШИСЬ powered by Push.World There people are sure that foreign languages are not that important in people`s lives. They believe that not everyone should know a foreign language as there is a special job - an interpreter. According to these people, interpreters should translate books, movies, people`s speech and etc. Besides, these people think that learning foreign languages is not a necessary skill because they won’t use it anywhere so it’s useless skill for them. However, I cannot agree with this opinion completely, because foreign languages are an important part of people`s lives. There are different situations in the world and knowledge of any foreign language can help not only a person who knows this language but other people too. As a conclusion, it is important to emphasize that learning a foreign language is an important life skill indeed. Foreign languages can help people in so many differ ways that is why it is important to learn at least the basics of other languages.
Тhe Programme aims to train language specialists who are equipped with solid grounding in generic and subject-specific competences comprising communication skills in English (C1) and the second foreign language (B2), fundamentals in linguistics, literary theory, understanding of culture and literature as well as research skills
