How can you explain this statement?

Today we are going to speak about houses in Britain.The aim of our lesson is to learn about types of houses and to learn which type of housing is the most popular in the UK. Today we are going to work in groups. The first row will be the 1 group and the 2 row will be the second group.

Open your books at page 33 ex1. Each group need to choose the house in which you would like to live. And you need to explain why you chose this house in 2 sentences. I give you two minutes.

Look at the blackboard. You see the scheme of types of houses.

They are devided into detached, semi-detached, block of flats and terraced houses.

Detached houses are houses which stand alone and are not joined to each other.

Detached houses are divided into cottages, mansions and bungalows.

Cottages are small houses.

Mansions are large and expensive houses. The most richest people are live there.

Bungalows are one-storied houses.

Semi-detached houses are houses joined together and have one common wall.

Terraced house is a row of houses that are joined together.

Block of flats are divided into studios and maisonettes.

A block of flats is a large building that is divided into apartments.

Maisonette is a part of large house which consists of two stories and has its own entrance.

Studiois a small apartment which combines living room, bedroom and kitchen into a single room.

Nastya, read all the types of the houses.

Ok. Now open your books at p 34 ex 2a You need to match the types of the houses with their descriptions. You can see the scheme on the blackboard or your own schemes. Do it in groups.

Now, look at the ex 2b. You need to name the types of houses in the photos from ex 1.

Let’s imagine that you are estate agents and you need to help people to find a house.

1)- Now, we have retired we don’t need much space. We’d like to live in the country and we need a spare badroom for our son ( a bungalow)

2)- The house must be big and must have 3 bedrooms and also a garden for the dog. Otherwise the only thing is to be quite near schools for the kids and near the shops. (a detached house)

3) I and my husband are looking for a small flat. We don’t care too much about space so it can combine living room, bedroom and kitchen in one apartment. (Studio)

4) We are looking for a house in the country, where to go to a barbeque, a picnic or just to relax. We meed it for 2 weeks. (a cottage)

5) I want to live in a large house. The rooms must be designed according to the latest fashion.Leisure activities of a particular kind must be there.( mansion)

Find ex.3a. Find the diagram. Which type of housing is the most popular in the UK? Which is the least popular?

Find ex 4a at p 34 . You see some definitions. These words were mentioned in the radio programme. Let’s look them in details. You need to find their Russian equivalents.

Find ex.5a. You need to complete the sentences with the words from ex.4a. Let’s do it at once.

Now let’s listen to the radio programme once again you need to note down the advantages and disadvantages of each type of houses.

(One advantage of a detached house is the fact I had the free space surrounding the building belongs to the family. You can do whatever you would like to be done in your house.

One advantage of living in a semidetached house is that there is still some privacy

One of the major advantages of terrace housing is that it is relatively cheaper than a semi-detached built in the same location.

The one advantage of renting a flat is that you are not responsible for it. In case you feel like moving house, you can just leave.)

Each group need to think of other advantages and disadvantages of each type of housing.
