Великий и загадочный или ещё раз о Шекспире

Глухова Наталья Павловна
учитель иностранного языка
The great and misterious actor, playwright, poet, and theatre entrepreneur....

The great and misterious actor, playwright, poet, and theatre entrepreneur. Let us learn more about his life…..

Introduction

Teacher: Different times are usually characterized by new ideas and new inventions.

Do you know any of great inventions of the 20th century?

Giveyourexamples.

Teacher: But there wouldn’t be any of them if there hadn’t been the period of Renaissance. Do you know the meaning of the word «Renaissance»? What are your associations with this period?

Students : - rebirth, associated with progress, creativity, philosophy

Teacher: Renaissance gave us great names and lots of talented people. What great names is that time famous for? / which of them do you remember?

Students : (connect)

inventions

Great people

glasses

aircraft

telescope

microscope

arbalest

submarine

Leonardo daVinci

Copernicus

Galileo Galilee

Jordano Bruno

Francis Bacon

Christopher Columbus

Teacher: So, as you have already understood, today we are talking about great people of Renaissance. The aim of our lesson is to revise the greatest breakthroughs in the history of mankind, to define the place of great people in the development of our world and discuss the specific features of their personalities.

Teacher: The motto of our lesson is

Of all great people he is the most mysterious.”These words were said by James Joyсе, a great Irish writer and poet. Guess, who these words are about?

Students : I think these words are about …..

In my opinion………

To my mind …….

Teacher: You’re absolutely right. Shakespeare’s name is known all over the world. The last half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries is known as the golden age of English Renaissance and sometimes this period is called “The Age of Shakespeare”. Why is Shakespeare considered mysterious?

Students :Unfortunately, we know few facts about his life and many of them are doubtful. But some facts are proved by documents.

Students :- Oh, I know some facts about his life. William Shakespeare was probably born on the 23rd of April in 1564 in Stratford- on- Avon. His father was a shopkeeper and a glove maker. His mother was a farmer’s daughter. Shakespeare finished grammar school, where he learned grammar, logic and Latin. When Shakespeare was 18, he married Anne Hathaway, a woman 8 years older than he and they had three children (a daughter and twins). At the age of 22 Shakespeare left Stratford alone and went to London. But we don’t know why.

Students :- Remember, we have discussed it at the literature lesson. London of that time was a splendid place, where painters, musicians, poets created their works. The Theatre was the most exciting entertainment. And Shakespeare became a member of the company known as “ The Lord Chamberlain’s men” where he worked as an actor and a playwright. Later he and his company built the Globe Theater.

Students :-Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, among them comedies, historical plays; he also wrote 154 sonnets. His works are thought to be masterpieces of English literature. Shakespeare never attended any university. He was educated at the local school at Stratford. But it was enough to develop his inborn literary skill. He expressed a variety of human feelings in his works. He influenced the English language more than any other writer in history.

Students :------It’s known that in 1611 at the height of his career and fame he returned to Stratford. But nobody knows why. The day of his death was on the 23rd of April in 1616.

Teacher: William Shakespeare is famous for his works. What Shakespeare’s works do you know?

Students :

Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Merchant of Venice and The Comedy of Errors,

Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It and Twelfth Night. Tragedies: Hamlet, King Lear, Othello and Macbeth. He also wrote 154 sonnets.

Teacher: His works are unique in beauty of the language and the depth of knowledge of human nature. What do you think about them?

Students : One of the most famous things is the monologue. I was amazed by his feelings and inner emotions. I’d like to recite a part of Hamlet’s soliloquy (monologue).

To be, or not to be: that is the question:

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,

And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;

No more; and by a sleep to say we end

The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation

Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;

To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;

Teacher: A lot of great actors played the role the Dutch Prince. Let us watch this monologue recited by Innnokentiy Smoktunovsky….

Teacher: But nobody can live without love. And what about his everlasting love stories?

Students : My favourite one, of course, is Romeo and Juliet. I think there is nobody who can be indifferent to it.

JULIET

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;

Thou art thyself, though not a Montague.

What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot,

Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part

Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!

What's in a name? that which we call a rose

By any other name would smell as sweet;

So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd,

Retain that dear perfection which he owes

Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name,

And for that name which is no part of thee

Take all myself.

Students : But I prefer short verses, poems and sonnets. They are like short stories.

Sonnet 90

Then hate me when thou wilt; if ever, now;

Now, while the world is bent my deeds to cross,

Join with the spite of fortune, make me bow,

And do not drop in for an after-loss:

Ah, do not, when my heart hath 'scoped this sorrow,

Come in the rearward of a conquer'd woe;

Give not a windy night a rainy morrow,

To linger out a purposed overthrow.

If thou wilt leave me, do not leave me last,

When other petty griefs have done their spite

But in the onset come; so shall I taste

At first the very worst of fortune's might,

And other strains of woe, which now seem woe,

Compared with loss of thee will not seem so.

Teacher:It is out of question that his works are extremely popular all over the world. But now I can prove you that all the time we use Shakespeare’s words and phrases in our everyday life. We have the cards for you. Please, connect the original phrase with the Russian variant.

1. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark

2. The world is a prison.

3. Revenge should have no bounds.

4. Own self be true.

e) Весь мир-тюрьма.

f) Подгнило что-то в Датском королевстве.

g) Путь истинной любви не бывает гладким…

h) Любовь слепа, влюбленные не видят….

i)Коня! Коня! Все царство за коня!

j) глупость и невежество — общее проклятие человечества

Teacher: We have discussed Shakespeare’s life and career but we haven’t said anything about his personality. His friend called him “noble Will”. Let’s think, what kind of person he could be.

What words can characterize him?

Students :- Hardworking, creative, persistent, determined, confident……

Teacher: To be a genius is to be talented and hardworking. What personality traits are the most important for you?

Students : I believe the most important is to be …….. because ……

Teacher: To sum up our lesson let’s make up a cinquainabout Shakespeare. For us it will be more interesting to work in groups , unfortunately our classroom isn’t very comfortable, but you can move closer to each other. I suggest that you should write a cinquain about Shakespeare, Renaissance or about any other outstanding figure of Renaissance.

cinquain-is a short poem without rhymes, usually connected with the topic and used for summing up the discussion:

1. topic Great people

2. description creative, determined, courageous

3. action develop, imagine

4. our opinion we respect them

5. synonym genious

Teacher:Thank you for your work. Now I think we can make the conclusion that great people are not for an age but forages.
