IS CHOICE A GOOD THING?

Sometimes, houses in one street, which look the same as those in the next street, can cost thousands of pounds more. Why? The answer is ‘catchment area’. This is the area from which each school in Britain takes its students. According to the previous regulations, children should go to the school which is the closest to their home. If the school is good, parents are happy to pay extra to live in the school’s catchment area and give their children a good education.

Now, a new law gives parents more choice about which school their child can go to. Schools can say ‘No’ to children even if they live in the school’s catchment area. It doesn’t often happen, but schools can fill up and refuse to take any more students.

To decide who gets in, there is a points system. Those who live closest to the school get more points. Those who have brothers or sisters at the school also get more points. This is a good idea as it is easier for parents and nice for the children but it can cause problems.

One reason this happens is because of cheating. Some families rent a house or flat near to a good school but don’t actually live in it. They give the school the address of the rented property because it’s near the school. When their oldest child gets into the school, they can stop renting. The oldest child then has a place and any future younger brothers or sisters are more likely to get a place there, even though the family don’t really live near the school. That means fewer places for the local children.

Parents can now apply to up to six schools. Unfortunately, some children don’t get into any of them. The local education authority must then choose a school for them but these are often very bad schools and can also be a long way away from the children’s home.

Many people would like to go back to the traditional catchment area idea. Choice is great when you get what you want but not so good for those who end up with no choice at all.

1 A good school could make house prices higher. _____

2 Under the old law, children could go to any school _____

in the catchment area.

Choosing a University: Live at Home or Move Away?

There are over 150 universities in the UK, each one offering a huge range of courses. You will almost certainly need to decide what is most important to you. Wrong course choice is the main reason why students drop out of university, with incorrect choice of where to study just behind. So it is important to get it right. It costs a lot of money to change courses or change universities and may upset your parents and friends. However, over 93% of UK students are still in higher education one year after starting – most students stay and succeed.

Here are some things to think about before you make a decision: Do you want to be close to your family or go as far away as possible? Do you want to be close to your school friends or try to make lots of new friends? Do you want to find the cheapest way of going to university or not worry too much about money? Only you can answer these questions for yourself.

The location of the university is, of course, very important. If you want to live at home, the decision is easy. If you want to live away from home, then you need to think about the travel time to and from home. Going away to university or living at home certainly lead to very different lifestyles!

Going away to university can give you a greater feeling of freedom than staying at home. In the UK, you are free to choose. Moving away from home means that you can study or socialise when you like without having to worry about what your parents think. But moving away from home will almost certainly be more expensive. Do you want to study and have a part-time job at the same time?

Students who happily live away from home are fast to take responsibility for shopping and cooking maybe for the first time and realise that clothes do not wash themselves. These are excellent life-skills! Leaving home is a big decision. It is also a great way to move into adulthood.

On the other hand, home gives you some security.

1 UK universities provide over 150 courses. _____

2 Most students leave university early because _____

they choose the wrong university.

3 More than 7% of university students leave _____

in their first year.

5 It’s important to think carefully about where _____

you want to study.

6 Where you live can change your experience _____

of studying a lot.

7 There are some places in the UK where you _____

can study for free.

8 Parents worry less about you if you live _____

away from home.

9 Students who do well living away from _____

home quickly learn to look after themselves.

10 The writer seems to think that living away _____

from home is better than living at home.
