Teaching english at elective courses based on local lore

ПРОФЕССИОНАЛЬНО-ОРИЕНТИРОВАННОЕ ОБУЧЕНИЕ ИНОСТРАННЫМ ЯЗЫКАМ НА ЭЛЕКТИВНЫХ КУРСАХ

Аннотация.Статья описывает подходы, принципы и содержание элективных курсов. Профессионально-ориентированное обучение повышает качество овладения иностранным языком, способствует развитию личности учащихся, усиливает мотивацию и интерес. Авторы предлагают создавать элективный курс для будущих экскурсоводов на основе краеведческих материалов.

Abstract. The article describes approaches, principles and content of elective courses. Professionally-oriented teaching increases the quality of foreign language acquisition, enhances the development of students’ personality and improves motivation and interest. The authors suggest creating an elective course for future guides on the basis of local lore.

There are lots of public demands for modern schools. One of the most important is the orientation of education on learning, development of pupil`s personality, his/her cognitive interests and favorable socialization in modern society [9, с. 9-10; 11, с. 40-41]. Senior high school helps pupils to choose the probable way in their future lives. This choice is based on pupil`s interests, possibilities and abilities. That`s why modern educational process gives attention mostly to the specialized education. New systems of specialized education unit general and professional education. As a result, it gives an opportunity for pupil`s qualitative training for the future higher education.

Foreign language serves to turn an ordinary subject into a basic element of the educational system which forms pupil`s personality and helps to adapt a pupil to the chosen profession. Elective courses add applied character to the education and allow pupils to learn principles of the professional activity [4, с. 11; 5, с. 21-23].

Elective courses are developed according to the students` preferences. It is certainly helps students to understand the speciality. The level of students` linguistic, cultural and professional training is increasing.

In accordance with Gureeva`s [4] studies on the elective courses students have chance to get additional multidisciplinary knowledge which is not included in the basic course. They even can get to know with skills that are important for their future professional activity.

The aim of this course is formed on students` interests and favour highly-developed knowledge and skills. Students get an opportunity of self-realisation and self-expression during the professional oriented language learning. Learner-centered, problematic and competency building approaches find their realization in elective courses as the means of cross-cultural communication in the situations of the professional exchange [8,с. 80-81; 10, с. 86; 11, с. 40-41].

If we talk about the multidisciplinary nature of the elective courses, we suppose that it is important to take into consideration the type of the education which was chosen by the student. The matter is the popular classes in the high school in which students have profound studies of main courses. If school has courses which are significant for the future profession it serves as a great motivation for students. They try harder to master to a subject and speech exercises have high natural motivation. For instance, we have developed a program of the elective course which is intended for training guides in the native city for foreign tourists. Our researches corroborated that the usage of local lore materials can be employed in the process of the students` cross-cultural competency formation [1;2;3].

Developing and carrying out elective courses it is necessary to rely on the principles of teaching that are relevant to achieve the aims. Among didactic principles we can chose the principle of professional orientation of teaching, reliance on science, multidisciplinarity and the creative nature of teaching. Among methodological principles – use of information technologies in teaching, organization the dialogues of cultures, orientation on personal information of the professional character in the foreign language, multitasking of exercises and some others.

If we talk about the content of the course, it traditionally includes linguistic, psychological and methodological components [5, с. 24-26]. Linguistic component contains foreign knowledge which satisfies needs and interests of the students group. Psychological component contains skills and abilities for the professional communication in the intercultural exchange. Creative abilities, especially translation, play a particular role [12, с. 80]. The realization of the methodological component implies the development of skills in planning students` work and in using self-control in the process of language learning as the mean of professional communication.

As the elective courses are multidisciplinary it is important for the teacher to think over the connection between the course and other subjects. It makes an opportunity to extend the knowledge, develop practical skills, get useful information for the chosen professional field. For example, future guides get knowledge about the native land not only at English lessons but also at local lore [6;7]. We are sure that exactly this approach is effective for the development of the students` culture and their self-development which helps to improve skills and abilities for the future profession.

In such a way, elective courses serve to satisfy students` informative needs. The planning of elective course requires taking into consideration some approaches for the right aim setting, realization relevant principles of teaching by means of which students study education content.
