«Heads and Tails. Wonders of the World: Australia».

Ведущий 1:Heyeveryone!It's Heads and Tails. I'm …. and this is …. ! Discover the best countries with us! Well, you won't believe where we are today! This is Australia!

Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, and the only one that covers a whole continent. Many of the animal and plant species of Australia are not found anywhere else in the world. This is because the country was isolated from other land masses for millions of years, so no new species arrived. The existing species could not mix with others and so did not change or develop.

Ведущий 2:The Australian system of government combines elements derived from the political systems of the United Kingdom (fused executive, constitutional monarchy) and the United States (federalism, written constitution, strong bicameralism).

Ведущий 1:Queen Elisabeth is the queen of Australia and Scott Morrison is an Australian prime minister since 2018.

Ведущий 2:Despite its size, Australia has a small population with most people living in cities on or near the coast.

Ведущий 1:The island continent of Australia lies between the Indian and Pacific Oceans in the region of Oceania in the southern hemisphere. About 70% of the country is very dry and nearly 40% of the country is desert. It`s climate can cause destructive fires that Australian people have to fight almost every year.

Ведущий 2:Because the first nation to colonize the country was Britain, the official language of Australia is English, which everyone is expected to speak. However, many other languages are also spoken - more than 200, including native Australian languages.

Ведущий 1:There is a difference between British English and Australian English that starts from the dialect and pronunciation and ends with local terms for many things that only true Australians can understand! ... (рассказ про произношения разных слов)

Ведущий 2:Why do so many people want to move to Australia? Is it because Australia has some of the warmest and driest weather in the world, beautiful scenery and a clean environment?

Ведущий 1:Or because they like the idea of living in a really multicultural country?

Ведущий 2:Perhaps they have read or heard that life in Australia is less stressful than in many other countries?

Ведущий1:Or maybe they think it will be easier to find a job there than in their own countries?

Ведущий 2:I’m sure we’ll find answers to all these questions. I promise it's going to be a sunny, bright.... and sooo delicious Heads and Tails episode! I'll tell you everything about Australia and show you all. Let's toss a coin? Are you ready?

Ведущий 1:Yeah! - Tails

Ведущий 2:Heads

Ведущий 1:Wait, let me check, okay, come on.

Ведущий 2:Yeah! I have an unlimited card, and you can use the underground, …

Ведущий 1:Well, I'm glad you're going to see Australia in all its beauty. Do you have any water?

Ведущий 2:No. Bye! Take your backpack. I gotta bounce…

Ведущий 1: -Well, my English is ОК. As they say, with a tongue in one's head one can find the way to Rome. At the airport, I exchanged my 100 dollars for 127 Australian dollars. I think that will be enough for me to visit The National Museum of Australia, in the national capital Canberra. The museum preserves and interprets Australia's history, exploring the key issues, people and events that have shaped the nation.

Текстыучащихся: Most Australians have their origins in other countries. The only native people of Australia are the Aboriginals, who now make up about 3% of the total population.

About 40,000, perhaps as many as 60,000, years ago, the Aboriginals were the first people lived in Australia. It is not known exactly how many native people there were before Europeans arrived in 1788 but experts think there were over 400 tribes in Australia and on the islands near it, each with its own language and territory.

The first recorded discoveries of the Australian continent by Europeans were made in 1606, when a Spanish ship and a Dutch ship reached the north-east coast. Thirty-six years later a Dutch sea captain called Abel Tasman discovered an island near the south-east coast. He named it Van Diemens Land, a name it kept until the British changed it to Tasmania in 1856.

On 23rd August 1770, following the orders of the British government, Captain Cook in his ship Endeavour, sailed up the Island and claimed the region he had just explored for Britain. He named it New South Wales. His party had spent four months in exploration along eastern Australia, from south to north. The first colony was established at Sydney by Captain Arthur Phillip on January 26, 1788.

However, colonization had a very bad effect on the size of the Aboriginal population. There were two main reasons for this. Firstly, the colonists brought diseases with them that were previously unknown in Australia and the Aboriginals often died when they caught them. Secondly, there were many fights about land during which large numbers of both Aboriginals and Europeans were killed.

There were several reasons why Great Britain was interested in having Australia as part of its Empire. One of them was because it wanted a base for its ships in that part of the world. Another reason was because it planned to establish a colony for convicts there, known as a penal settlement.

At the beginning of the 18th century in Britain, the prisons were so crowded that there was not enough room for all the criminals. In order to solve this problem, the British government had introduced transportation to penal settlements in its American colonies as a punishment.

For seventy five years, between 1718 and 1783, Britain had sent criminals to its thirteen colonies in North America, but after the American War of Independence, it lost control over them. Now that Australia had been claimed as part of the Empire, new colonies could be established there and the problem of where to send convicts was solved.

Botany Bay was chosen to have the first Australian penal settlement; so on 13th May 1787 eleven ships set sail from Portsmouth, England, with over 1,000 people on board. Over three quarters were convicts. Captain Phillip, who was in charge of the ships, decided to go further north because he did not think that the bay was a good place for a settlement. He stopped at Port Jackson, which had an excellent natural harbor. It was there, on 26th January (now celebrated as Australia Day), that the first European settlement in Australia was established. It was named Sydney after a British politician called Lord Sydney, who was responsible for the plans to colonize the country.

Life in the new colony was very hard for the convicts. They were expected to work all day from sunrise to sunset. In hot weather they were allowed to rest for an hour in the middle of the day.

Convicts were given a Ticket of Leave or a certificate of freedom when they completed their punishment or before that if they behaved well. This allowed them to go back to their homes in Britain if they wanted to. Many decided to stay in Australia, however, and look for a job or start a business.

The first free settlers arrived in 1793. These settlers were not convicts but people who had chosen to start a new life in Australia.

During the 1850s, the population of Australia increased very quickly for two main reasons. The first was that a lot of cheap land became available for farming as more of the land west of Sydney was explored and cleared of trees.

The second was the discovery of gold. The gold rushes changed Australia. Roads were built and Australia’s railways opened in 1831. By the late 1880s, most people living in the Australian colonies had been born there and felt Australian rather than the nationality of their parents or grandparents. People started to talk about a union of the six states and finally, at the end of the century, they voted to become a federation. On 1st January 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was formed.

Ведущий 2:Well, I have an unlimited card, so we are going to order the baddest car in Australia. It’s a bargain for 600 dollars. Are you ready to get into the countryside?

Australia has some of the world`s most unusual and diverse natural environments, and is home to more than one million species of plants and animals.

Текстыучащихся: The kangaroo has been a symbol of the Australian continent ever since it was discovered. When Captain Cooks ship Endeavour arrived back in England in 1771, it carried a large number of plants and animals previously unknown to Europeans. One of the strangest was a kangaroo. George Stubbs, a famous artist of the time, drew it and his drawing appeared in the official report of Endeavour’s journey. After that the kangaroo and Australia were linked forever.

The koala, also a symbol of Australia, is sometimes called a koala bear, but is actually a marsupial. Wild koalas only live in eastern Australia where there is a lot of their favourite food - the leaves of the eucalyptus tree. They spend most of their lives in these trees, sleeping in the branches for up to eighteen hours during the day and eating at night. An adult koala can eat up to a kilogram of leaves in one night.

About the size o f a pet cat, platypuses live in burrows and spend much of their time swimming in water. They use their duck-like bills to catch the very small animal life they find in the water. They can store food in pouches inside their mouths, which is useful while they are hunting underwater.

The echidna is found all over Australia because it can survive in a range of temperatures and habitats. Although they are most active at night, they also come out during the day if the weather is warm. If it is either very hot or very cold, however, they stay in their burrows or under rocks.

Both the platypus and the echidna have been used several times as Australian mascots. For example, the platypus was one of the three mascots chosen for the Sydney 2000 Olympics

Australia has a large number of different reptiles compared to other continents, and some of them can be very dangerous to humans – the snakes in particular! The eastern brown snake, for example, causes more than half the deaths due to snake bites in Australia! This is not because their venom is the most dangerous, but because they often live in places like farms, where there are people.

Another very dangerous animal is the saltwater crocodile, which lives in the wet areas around Darwin in Northern Territory. It is the world’s largest reptile. Some crocodiles grow up to seven meters long and weigh more than a tone. ‘Salties’, as Australians call them, eat mainly smaller reptiles, fish, turtles but they can also attack humans who enter their territory.

Australia is home to hundreds of different birds: birds with brightly coloured feathers, birds that do amazing dance shows, birds that can copy the sounds they hear around them, birds that can’ t fly, and many more.

The largest native bird of Australia is the emu, which can be up to two metres tall. Emus can’t fly but their long legs allow them to run very fast. They live all over Australia on the grasslands.

Scientists say that there are 13.6 million species of plants and animals on Earth. Australia has about one million of these, which represents more than 7% of the world’s total. This means that Australia is not only one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, but even megadiverse.

However, there are many threats to Australia’s biodiversity: human activity like farming, cutting down trees and mining, air and water pollution, predators such as the crown-of-thorns starfish, climate change and fires.

Over the last two hundred years, many Australian plant and animal species have disappeared. Today the Australian government is working with non-governmental organizations like the World Wide Fund for Nature to protect the animals and plants that are in danger.

Ведущий 2:With the help of my unlimited card, today, we have the possibility to meet celebrities face to face and talk with them about various forms of art and sports of Australia! The names of Australian famous film stars, who have all starred in award-winning films, are probably familiar to most of us. Among the best-known are the actresses Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman, the actor Hugh Jackman and an actress and producer Margot Elise Robbie. (/ˈmɑːrɡoʊ ˈrɒbi/)

Текстыучащихся: I’m Cate Blanchett. I trained in the theatre before I moved into films in 1997. My acting talent was soon recognized and in 1998 I was offered the part of Queen Elizabeth I of England in the very successful film Elizabeth. I am regarded as one of the greatest actresses of my generation.

The visual arts and the performing arts in Australia were strongly influenced by Western traditions up until the middle of the 20th century. Since then there has been a growing interest in Aboriginal Australian art, music and dance, and their importance as part of the country’s cultural history and national identity. As a result, Australia now has a very lively arts scene that is a mix of many old and new cultural traditions.

I am Nicole Kidman and I was born in 1967 in Honolulu, but moved to Australia with my family when I was four years old. I made my first film when I was just 16 years old. The excellent reviews I received soon caught the attention of Hollywood directors and in 1990 I was invited to go to the USA and then my dream came true. I have made a great number of successful films

According to a recent survey by the Australian government, almost thirteen million or 88% of Australian adults attend at least one cultural event or performance every year. The most popular art form is definitely film.

Watching films has been a popular form of entertainment in Australia since the first cinema opened in Melbourne in 1896. This was only one year after the Lumiere brothers invented the cinema camera.

My name is Hugh Jackman. Like Cate Blanchett, I started my career in the theatre. I’m a very talented singer, dancer and actor, and have been involved in film, musical theatre and television. I am best known for playing Wolverine/Logan in the X-Men film series (2000–2017), a role for which I hold the Guinness World Record for "longest career as a live-action Marvel superhero".

A lot of talented singers and musicians in Australia are very successful in their home country but remain almost unknown internationally. Kylie Minogue, the princess of pop, is certainly not one of these! She has had a long and successful career in the UK, Europe and her native Australia.

I am Margot Elise Robbie (/ˈmɑːrɡoʊ ˈrɒbi/) - an Australian actress and producer. In 2017, Time magazine named me one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and in 2019, I was ranked among the world's highest-paid actresses by Forbes.

Sport is an important part of the culture in Australia. Because of the good climate, Australians can spend a lot of time outdoors, so many people play a sport of some kind. The larger towns and cities have good facilities for people who like taking part in club and team sports: football and rugby fields, athletics stadiums, swimming pools and tennis courts.

Australia has about 11,000 beaches along its coastline and some of them are first-class surf beaches. With wonderful places like these to go, it is not surprising that surfing is a popular Australian sport.

Ведущий 1:And while my partner is hanging out with his star – friends, we are going to attend street festivals to get acquainted with the preserved traditions of the country.

Текстыучащихся:According to recent research, in Australia more people listen to live music in the city’s festivals than watch football in the stadiums. Some of them go on tour and are known as Australia Wide Music Festivals. The best known is the Big Day Out, which tours the cities of Sydney, Gold Coast, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth from the end of January, and is attended by more than 300,000 people.

Ведущий 2: Now it is time to visit the most recognizable sight – seeing of Australia – The Sydney Opera House. It is the original place of inspiration to all those celebrities who have made a difference to the world in a positive way.

Текстыучащихся: Opera was first introduced into small colonial theatres in the 1840s. It was so popular that larger theatres for bigger productions had to be built just a few years later.

The Sydney Opera House was opened in 1973 and has since become one of the most immediately recognizable buildings of the 20th century. Designed by the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, it is home to the four most important performing arts companies - Opera Australia, Australian Ballet, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

Ведущий 1:These street festivals are so exhausting! I wish I could turn invisible now and end up finding myself in a cool spacious hall of The Sydney Opera House. If only I had something to eat.

Текстыучащихся: Australians have few traditions regarding food. The Christian festival of Christmas is celebrated by most of the population but not many people eat the traditional British Christmas dinner of turkey and vegetables followed by a Christmas pudding. As Christmas falls in the hottest months, lighter foods like seafood, pasta and ice cream have become much more usual. However, there are some people who celebrate ‘Christmas in July, using the coldest month of the year to enjoy a traditional hot Christmas dinner!

Easter is also widely celebrated in Australia. A typical menu for Easter Day includes beef or chicken with vegetables and a fruit Pavlova for dessert. This delicious dessert was probably created to honour the Russian dancer Anna Pavlova during or after one of her tours to Australia in the 1920s. Pavlova is made with egg whites and sugar. It is sweet, and often eaten with soft fruit like strawberries.

Australia Day is a day for celebrating famous Aussie foods. Many towns hold competitions to see who can eat the most meat pies.

Ведущий 1:What an amazing day it is. So many interesting things happen today. Awesome! I'm so happy. And so tired. What is it?

Текстыучащихся: Not content with naturally occurring big things, the Australians have actually built a number of Big Things themselves as tourist attractions, including the Big Banana, the Big Merino and, the biggest of all Australia’s Big Things, Larry the Lobster. Every state in Australia has at least one. Some of them are quite strange. However, they all have one thing in common - their extra-large size! Big Things first appeared in the 1960s and became a tradition for Australian towns to create a Big Thing that was their own unique tourism icon - something that helped people to remember their visit there.

Ведущий 2:Hi, ….!

Ведущий 1:Hi, …., how are you doing?

Ведущий 2:I'm great, I do share some experiences. To be honest, I've had such a great time. I gave absolutely every viewer a chance to be a millionaire with me. How is your Australia?

Ведущий 1:Oh! I definitely like it! The country is so awesome that you can't take your eyes off.

Ведущий 2:The name Australia comes from the Latin, ‘Terra Australia Incognito’, which means the Unknown Southern Land.

Ведущий 1:If you know Australia’s total population, you can clearly see that the population of kangaroos in the country outnumbers that of the humans.

Ведущий 2:Amazingly, during winter Australia has more snow than Switzerland.

Ведущий 1:There is a lake known as ‘Pink Lake’ in Australia. The name of this lake, which is a salt lake, is named after its color. It is in the Goldfields-Esperance region.

Ведущий 2:Uluru is an enormous rock alone in the middle of the desert. It is 3 kilometres long and 348 meters high, but there are another 2,100 meters under the ground. Uluru is 600 milion years old. The best time to see it is at the end of the day, when its colour changes from yellow to gold, red and then purple.

Ведущий 1:Then there is the Grat Barrier. At 2,500 kilometres it is the world’s longest coral reef. Parts of the reef are 20,000 years old.

Ведущий 2:Coober Pedy is a really extraordinary place and a town where everybody lives under the ground. More than 90% of the world’s beautiful blue-green stones called opals come from here. But it is very hot and dry here + 45 C. That is why most people live under the ground in houses which are dug out of the rock. Here they can stay cool, and if they want a bigger house, they just dig another room.

Ведущий 1:A whopping 91% of Australia is covered under vegetation.

Ведущий 2:Australia is the only continent without an active volcano.

Ведущий 1:Australia is often referred to as ‘The Lucky Country and there are plenty of reasons why that is true. It has friendly people, a good climate, interesting and unique wildlife, beautiful beaches, healthy natural food, a huge amount of important natural resources and a rich cultural and sports calendar. It is not surprising that Australians are very proud of their country and their heritage, and love the lives they lead in this amazing country!
